Never forget Darryl Stingley

On Aug. 12, 1978, 43 years ago tonight, in a meaningless pre-season game, Jack Tatum hit former Purdue standout Darryl Stingley with a vicious hit that left Stingley paralyzed for the rest of his life. Tatum should have pulled up as the pass was overthrown.

A shame what happened...ended his playing career and dramatically changed (and shortened) his life as well.

Darryl Stingley was a great football player, and, an even better person.

Back in 70s pre season games were not as meaningless as today. Many of those players had off-season jobs. 1970-77 NFL teams played 6 exhibition games. Regular season didnt start til mid-late September. 14 game season. '78 NFL went 16 game regular season schedule & 4 exhibition games

You are correct.The projected starters played a lot more in exhibhition games than they do now.
