My takeaways from the game. Maryland is probably the fourth best team in the conference. We played them on their home court giving them a huge advantage. They came in from games where they had the twin towers at times with big men that give up a lot of fouls. This game they did not go Twin Towers, because they saw Haarms eat Bender alive. Instead they kept Jackson at the 4 and Huerter at the 3. We kept Vince at the 4 and even though Jackson got too many O rebounds, Vince kept him from being a big scorer. They expected more scoring from Huerter, but Mathias was all over him. Both men would look to come inside, but the sight of Haas intimidated them. Their SG looked to play well, but their shooting stats showed Carson played good D too. PJ did a good job forcing Cowan to take seconds off the shot clock brining the ball up. Maryland only shot 35% - great job for all on D.
The most surprising stats were Maryland did not have that many turnovers. I was expecting twice as many and I do not know enough about their history as to why there were not more. The other stat was they did not have that many fouls. Their big men especially get into easy foul trouble. They did not. However, the good news is that their big men did not score much except for put backs or when Haas double teamed. Chekovsky did make a nice move against Haas to score left handed. We played great considering the majority of our foul shots came from intentional fouls or technical. Again, even though Maryland never went Twin Towers, I would have liked to see it employed when their shooting got hot, but no complaint as Haarms was in foul trouble. If we keep playing smart like this, I can see us only losing 2 conference games.
