I saw an Indy Star headline that made it sound like he was having off-season surgery. I can't read the article. Anyone have any info on this?

If already covered somewhere else, I couldn't find it.

Thanks.

Seems to be ok and should be ready later this summer to start playing:

“Murphy underwent surgery to repair a partial labrum tear in his left, non-shooting shoulder five weeks ago. He is optimistic he will be cleared for full-contact participation before Purdue resumes practice in early June.“

Makes me question the portal pickup just a bit. Shoulder surgeries are not always quick recovery and range of motion can be affected , rehab is very important and even then shoulders can be tricky d/t multi rotational nature…
Hope he’s good to start practicing on a timely schedule. Couldn’t read the article

The injury did not stop Murphy from leading the Atlantic Sun Conference in 3-point percentage and makes per game. He also does not feel as though he lost much strength due to the surgery. He said he's had full range of motion for a couple of weeks and has been maintaining his range by working on form shooting.

Not just shooting. He'll be counted on heavily for rebounding and defense, if he wants playing time. As Heads up Boiler said, shoulders can be tricky. But, yeah, Painter was aware, and he trusts his staff, doctors, and trainers.

Eesh. I had both of my shoulders repaired from full labrum tears (5 anchors in my right and six in my left). I had my dominant arm repaired in my mid 20s and it took a full year to recover fully with dedicated rehab. His is a partial, but wow, that recovery time sounds short. Hope it goes well for him.

I get what you’re saying but if he’s “counted on heavily” for rebounding and defense” this team is in trouble. It might be a win if he can get to the “doesn’t suck” level in those areas.

He gives purdue another look off the bench. We can go big or small with him....previously we had burgess or play really big or really small. Had we not got him or someone similar i was wondering if benter might get some minutes in this spot. He still may but we have options.

I like the addition but he’s going to come in as a floor spacer in limited minutes. He may win us some games this year with his shooting but if he provides anything above ‘barely good enough’ in terms of rebounding and defense it would be a pleasant surprise. Dude is an elite shooter though and has a decent body.

Completely agree. Cluff and kaufman-renn will play alot of minutes together but i can see a scenerio where cluff is the primary center when renn is out and murphy is the 4. Jacobsen would get the majority of his mintes while renn is in.

Murphy is from Staten Island, NY. Who was the Purdue basketball player I think in the 80’s or 90’s from Staten Island? I tried to Google it but Murphy is the only result.

There are more questions than answers with this story. Painter has shown that he won't play a 6-8 guy who can score but not do much else. If the guy Murphy is guarding scores more than him, and at 6-8 he doesn't get his share of rebounds, then he won't get much playing time. People here complain about Loyer's defense. Loyer will be on the floor a lot. If Murphy doesn't play solid defense, would he be on the floor much with Loyer?

How long ago? It's CRAZY how quickly rehab often is now compared to even 5-10 years ago.

I do anesthesia and see people come in for these type surgeries all of the time. I agree the recovery timeline seems pretty short. Most of the orthopedic surgeons will tell you shoulders can be the most difficult as far as recovery, thus my first response on this thread. Young and healthy is in his favor but still seems short to be going out and playing hard physical basketball. I’d hope painter had him evaluated before signing him and can’t believe he didn’t. Good luck to him and hopes for quick and complete healing!

Do recovery times for partial/minor tears differ significantly from full tears or are they similar?

Agree on the ratio of questions to answers. I guess I believe that MP wouldn’t have taken him if he didn’t think that his defense and rebounding could be “good enough”. I suspect that the people who complain about Fletch’s defense will complain about Murphy.

A lot of varying factors involved, including age and health of the patient, extent of the repair, how long was the injury affecting use prior to surgery, skill of the orthopedic surgeon, willingness to work hard during rehab, good OT/PT rehab team/program… but in theory a lesser injury requires less tissue disruption during surgery and theoretically could /should be a bit quicker and easier rehab. With a shoulder the worry is always regaining ROM, stability, strength …
