the only plan DH has is how to sugar coat the disaster he has help create for Purdue football, the guy has to see what has happened, so basically the only reason he is staying is for the big bucks, while Purdue football gets worse, I wish I could go to sleep and wake up and find out the nightmare is over

At this point, I am not sold on the idea that Hazell doesn't see the problems with the program. I am more convinced that Hazell just doesn't have the ability or skill to turn it around and is just floundering around trying to find something that sticks. I sort of liken it to asking me to weld something together. I know what it supposed to happen and have a general understanding of how it should be done, but the finished product is going to just be awful. Will it resemble a weld? It sure will, but it just isn't the same as having someone who is trained and has experience. That being said, it would have been much smarter for Burke to have hired a coach who had experience turning a program around like Mike Leach.

Yeah, I think this is the case. He cares and wants to turn it around but isn't capable.

Yes, I have no doubt Hazell wants Purdue to become a much better program than it was before he was hired, no one wants to perform poorly (in Hazell's case very poorly) at their job and be the subject of ridicule.

The problem is Purdue needs an innovative system to be successful and that is not Hazell. He came to Purdue talking about binders about character and molding young men to be successful. Those are just coaching cliches and platitudes that are better suited for a church youth group than a football program. It sounds nice in a press conference but doesn't amount to much on game days.

The two things Tiller did really well were
1) Create an innovative offense to put up a lot of points.
2) Identify non-blue chip recruits who he could develop and would be impact players (just look at all the 3 star players he put in the NFL with very respectable careers).

Hazell lacks the ability to do both those things and that's why he's won 6 games in 3 years.

Well Put! I was in disbelief during the first CC when he mentioned we were going to play "SMASH MOUTH" football! To his dismay, we at Purdue pass the ball only to set up the run! Not the other way around Hazz!

He really did want to play Tressel ball. A grind it out running game with a defense that was fundamentally sound at all 3 levels minimizing the need to blitz. I think he's finally figured out that Purdue's talent isn't going to consistently get you 4-6 yards running between the tackles and it's defense isn't going to hold most offenses under 20 points but he doesn't know how to do anything else so you get to the point where we are. Now that recruiting has completely bottomed out it's only going to get worse.

I'm sure some coaches, maybe even Hazell, see a pass oriented spread offense as gimmicky or "soft football" for lack of a better term but at Purdue that's what you need to do to be successful. "Smash mouth" football might sound tough in the press conferences but the end result is 2-3 win seasons when you're at Purdue.

Smash mouth football is a fine approach to the game, but you have to be able to recruit those types of athletes. If Hazell wanted to run that system, he would have had to bring those types of players in during his first recruiting class and continue to bring those types of players in.

We, at Purdue, just don't have the smash mouth types. Alstott was the last player who was truly smash mouth IMO.

I think it really hurt Hazell to stay with Kent State thru the bowl season when he could have gotten started at Purdue assembling a staff and getting recruits. Plus we got what we paid for with respect to the 'staff'.

You have no clue what you're talking about.

That's actor/rapper/comedian Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, if you didn't know.

I just imagine that Haz has the same reactions as the dude with the pizza boxes because he always seems so surprised when we lose. Like wow that amazing game plan was a looser?!? I'm not sure what alternate reality Haz has been in the last few years but whatever it is I'm sure it was taken from a Purdue pharma research facility lol.
