About yesterday's game to me was how lost our secondary was.

I mean at least a half dozen times, an Auburn receiver was completely alone. Like a 3-5 yard lead on the Purdue defender and no help in the area.

Part of this has to be the defensive coaching. When they are beating us like that so frequently, you'd think you would adjust.

On a related note, Purdue was getting ZERO pressure on Stidham. It felt like he had all day in the pocket to throw. That gave their receivers plenty of time to get open.

The gulf in talent between the two rosters explains a lot of yesterday.

So many people think you can miss out on great talent, take what's left, throw a uni on them and expect their not to be a difference when matched up against the same talented kids who were not interested in said program to begin with. Applies to both fball and bball.

Was the coaching good? No

Was the talent disparity that great? Oh hell yes

What changes future outcomes? Recruiting

No pressure on the QB has been an issue all year. That wasn’t just today. That is why Karlaftis will be a day 1 starter.

As far as the secondary, there is a great discrepancy in talent yesterday. Their receivers were just better athletes. They will be young, but Grant, Graham, and others will be an improvement over what we had this year.

We still have Hazell recruits, but most should be in secondary roles, except for players like Bailey, Neal, etc.

Our two fastest corners were missing from a secondary that is slow to begin with. Best pass rusher was missing from a line that doesn’t rush the passer well to begin with. Didn’t think the game plan was great, but there’s only so much you can do with the talent differential unless the other team is off their game. Gus’s playcalling was on point as they attacked with speed downfield and in all areas of the field.

Honestly we were somewhat fortunate this year, getting to six wins with such a tremendous lack of depth at certain positions. This was my biggest concern for the season, and by and large we stayed healthy enough, but the drop off was just too great from starter to backup.

I hope people don't expect the pass rush to be solved by a freshman next year. It will take him some time to develop and work on techniques.

It won’t be solved by a freshman, but he will definitely help it. He could have started for this year’s team. We still need another bookend, and pressure from the DT is still a concern.

I’m not sure I would say the defensive backs were “lost”. I think they were just being outrun. #5 is a world class sprinter, and just ran by our boys and under the long throws of the QB.

Here are the reasons why, stacked from start to finish, about why it occurred:
1: Neal being out hurt the ability to stop the run/eat double teams up to free up LB blitzes.
2: Jones was out who is the best blitzing LB Purdue has
3: Thieneman was coming back after not playing for nearly 2 months and looked slow and out of shape
4: Major was out who is Purdue’s best cover CB
5: Blackmon was left to play and play largely one on one coverage lacking any defining athletic trait to cover Auburn’s WR’s.

Blackmon would struggle to start on any other P5 roster at Cb...that’s just a fact. If you didn’t think CB was going to be a weakness this season, you didn’t truly understand the roster and the limitations it had. When the offense couldn’t sustain drives and keep the game within reach until major adjustments could be made, that is what happens against a superior team who finally didn’t make mistakes and shoot themselves in the foot on offense.

And let’s be honest here...Auburn was always a top 15 team this year. It was a horrible matchup for Purdue given Auburn’s strengths (WR and DL) matched up directly with Purdue’s weaknesses (CB/DB and OL).

The ability to run the ball well, which Auburn has, forced the back four to be ready to support the run. That’s especially true for the safeties, who got caught looking in the backfield too often and then couldn’t help deep. It happens, especially when the other team is better. Brighter days ahead.

I feel bad for the Seniors to out this way, but its gotta motivate the younger guys for next season, to work harder and never get beat like that again.
I will really miss Knox and Jones. Really liked how Jones stepped in to defend Blough on that hard late hit. Sure wish the lineman who missed the block would have stepped up instead.
