More info on Cline

Wow. Considering he was in a vehicle that was running he is lucky that the actual or legal consequences weren't much worse. At least he was parked but he must have been out of it if the breaking of the passenger window didn't bring him to.

Ummmm ... WOW, yes, that is a ridiculously light sentence for the situation described. Although the variance in sentencing for very similar crimes is so wide it is one of the larger conversations/jokes at jails. Good thing he wasn't within a thousand yards of a school. If he learns and moves on, then good. That is the goal.

I am glad they didn't crucify the young man. But he is lucky he didn't hurt himself or somebody else.

Uh has no one paid attention to the prescription bottle aspect of this story? Weed alone won't knock you out like that - or at least to the point you are so unresponsive. The pills are the more troubling aspect of this story vs. weed.

Ya I wasn't eager to say it
Maybe initially thought he was going for weed(?), but sounds like received something far more

Would be great to learn from a teammate rather than each learning for oneself

I too am more concerned about the prescription bottle. Hope this was a 1 time incident that he happened to get caught rather than a pattern of his normal behavior.

Should be dismissed immediately. This is pathetic. Instead a slap on the wrist by missing 2 scrimmages and one actual game against a cream puff.

What a stupid thing to say. No he shouldn't be dismissed immediately and his suspension is harsher than other schools that turn a blind eye to far worse things *cough* MSU *cough* and let players play immediately.

Unfortunately reminded me of a situation involving a couple of kids right about Cline's age up here last year. These two kids mixed prescription drugs and alcohol and unfortunately never woke up.

I have no idea what mixing different prescription drugs with pot as opposed to alcohol can do but I've been told that it is not at all uncommon right now for high school and college kids to use them with either.

C'mon Cline your better than this, you can still have fun and not be an idiot at the same time. You have a D1 scholarship! Move on and learn from it.

If history is an indicator, a repeat offense would be much, much worse and possibly his last as a member of Purdue's basketball team. Painter has been fairly consistent in giving 2nd chances though.

This. He did something really stupid for sure but let's not tar and feather him just yet. He does it again then he will be gone... so hopefully he gets that and grows from it.

I had a South Bend police officer flat out tell me that he took a certain former Indiana Mr. Basketball back to his dorm once after pulling him over intoxicated and with pot on him. On many campuses, this stuff gets buried and results in no charges and no publicity.

Seems like the precedent has been set here (well before this year) with the 3 games. I wouldn't have complained about a longer punishment either.

FYI the pill bottle had weed it. You store it in their so you can't smell the stinky stuff. And don't ask me why I know that either ha.
and it can be laced with stuff that puts you out and maybe he didn't know it. I'm not making excuses for him. He was very lucky. But I agree let's not jump to conclusions.

When a car window has to be broken and you still aren't "responsive" that is a problem. Foot on the accelerator and the engine revving that is a problem. Just very fortunate that we weren't reading a completely different story this summer. This could have ended very badly.

It happened in Hamilton County. If there was more than just weed to the story it would have been told. Pill bottle is what he had his weed in. The chronic these days are so medically strong it will knock you out. Cline is an idiot for doing it behind the wheel tho. Kid needs to learn not have his life ruined.

Opposing BIG team student sections will have fun with this at road games. An embarrassment to Ryan and the university. I hope he responds well to getting another chance.

Also, what the hell is a "sternum rub"? I'm just guessing it is something significantly more than a "rub" if it is used to revive someone who is so out that they aren't responding to the other stimuli around them.

Should make for interesting commentary the next time he goes "unconscious" from behind the arc

People put weed in a prescription bottle all the time. That is fairly common.
Several people have said that on here. If it was "only" weed he was doing then so be it. Admittedly it has been some time since I "partook" but I never saw anyone be so out of it from weed that smashing a car window wouldn't wake them up and we certainly never had a sternum rub.

Must be some pretty good sh$t these days. Probably a good thing I'm not in school now!!

Sternum rub is when you take your knuckles and push them into the middle of the rib cage (or sternum if you will), rubbing them up and down. It is very uncomfortable and will often result in an unresponsive person waking up. It doesn't mean they didn't try shaking him or talking to him first. Often used by first responders.

You could say the same thing for Smotherman. I'm sure that Cline knew about Smotherman's incident a few weeks prior so I'm baffled as to why he would get himself into the same situation (in the same county as well) a few weeks later. Well, hopefully they both learn from it. At least Calipari's not their disciplinarian: he doesn't suspend players when they're passed out IN THE ROAD, nevertheless when they're in their own vehicle.

Depends on the individual and how your body processes it. I knew someone who stopped smoking because it knocked him out every time he smoked. And reports are that the cultured stuff kids are getting today is far more potent.

Anyone else think... What's a college kid doing driving a lexus?
Big Dog drove a Cherokee with a stereo system worth more than the vehicle when I was at Purdue.

He was from "The Region"....just sayin.

Cline from Carmel...no red flags there.

There are posters here and on hammerandrails insisting that Cline was taking something stronger than weed.

Whatever happened to innocent till proven guilty? Its weed, nothing else, move on.

The stuff nowadays is so potent. The weed that we smoke in college 20 years ago is nothing compared to the stuff nowadays. The stuff nowadays just blows your head off. I stopped smoking dope because the extreme potency just didn't make any sense to me. Before, you get high, you wax philosophical, you had new thoughts, original thoughts. I felt it actually improved me as a person. Now, its just BOOM, and you are out of it.....it diminishes you.

Not anti-weed, but everything in moderation also applies to weed

I would be seriously watchful of my kids when they start experimenting with drugs (as most kids do).
