From Yardbarker.com today:

Purdue

The Boilermakers are an interesting case. Could Purdue actually land a guy like Les Miles or will they also try to look to bring in Western Michigan's Fleck? Early rumors have Fleck as the guy their focused on and Purdue needs to make a big hire. In the last four seasons, the Boilermakers have gone 3-30 in Big Ten play and 9-39 overall. Purdue hasn't had a winning conference season since 2006 and haven't made a bowl since 2012.

However, they also said this:

Oregon

It sure looks like the Ducks will to fire Mark Helfrich instead of sticking with him for at least one more year. After all, two years ago Helfrich had Oregon in the inaugural College Football Playoff championship game. This year, however, saw the Ducks fall to 4-8 as they suffered some embarrassing defeats. Unlike places like Texas or LSU, Oregon isn't a guaranteed power and this sudden slippage in performance and recruiting is a huge problem.

The names you will see at the top of several coaching searches will be in play here (most notably Western Michigan's P.J. Fleck).

I say we sign Les and get this moving in the right direction. PJ is going to drag us out for weeks before turning us down for a better offer. By then - Les will be gone.

I dont see Oregon hiring fleck. They will have a ton of cash to make this hire with and IMO arent going to hire a mid major guy.

I agree. Sure Fleck has had a nice run and is this season's hotest pick, but I don't see it in Major College Football. He seems like he's selling himself on an advermercial more than being a serious coach. Rah, Rah - Row the Boat, handing out little oars before bedtime, and telling each player he loves them before they go to bed seems corny as hell to me. Kinda like "one brick higher" - how did that work out? We are now adding bricks to a basement that is 10 stories deep. Screw the slogans, gimmicks, etc. Go hit someone. This is big time football. If you need an oar and kiss to remind you of that, then you aren't ready to play in the big ten.

If Miles is such a great coach and we should hire how come Oregon not after him or Texas why didn`t they go for him instead of coach with just 2-years on the side lines. He Miles would treat Purdue just like he was at LSU an arrogant ass and after a couple years take the money and move on.

I was kind of enamored with the rah rah stuff for a couple months myself but I'm starting to have more and more doubts. I just wonder if Fleck isn't in a perfect storm at WMU.. No big, potentially cynical fan base to deal with. No media distractions (until they are 3/4 thru an undefeated season). No big boys on the schedule to shake the confidence of your players. What happens when he hits a few bumps in the road at Purdue? Can he recruit enough talent quickly enough to win games with a Big Ten schedule before the rah rah stuff wears out and the players tune him out? What is his bread and butter offensive and defensive identity? How many games has he won without Zach Terrell and Corey Davis?

Because this program isn't easy to sell on its own. You really have to have a dynamic personality. We just witnessed what a train wreck a serious CEO head coach had here.

I'm not saying Fleck is the guy but you have to have a head coach who knows how to sell.

Agree with this. Im not the biggest fan of Fleck's antics, however, he can recruit. If he is able to sell purdue to kids with other P5 offers, that would be a big upgrade over what the last staff did.

It will take time to rebuild this. Cliches like go hit somebody arent going to rebuild this mess

You nailed it. Fans don't like to acknowledge that Purdue is one of the toughest places to recruit to, since you aren't immediately surrounded by much big time talent, and you are not even the highest profile football program in your state. The media coverage, fanbase (and income potential) are going to be among the smallest among major programs. You do attract lots of athletes legitimately interested in their education, though, so that's nice, and you don't have to play OSU and Michigan every single year.

It's a recipe that only seems to work with a coach that is a particularly charismatic, energetic leader or one with a particularly innovative system.

income potential is rendered a non issue compared to a lot of mid tier, non big ten schools due to the size of the Big Ten media contracts with Fox and ABC/ESPN.
