A lot chatter on ESPN that both will be coaching at Purdue. D`Onofrio the d/c and Melvin d/l coach

Hazell's is leaving his O$U connections and working down to his Rutgers connections.

Here is reality. Both guys are unemployed, could not win big enough in a place built to win National Titles. I may label re-tread, although D'Onofrio at 45 is still a little young to be a re-tread. Not bad for a two-year deal. We could do worse and probably could not do better. 3 hires, 3 guys out of work. 3 guys with few other options. Not from the "mountains of resumes" DH had to sort through. What a bag of lies.

Who did you expect us to get? Honestly? If we were good, we wouldn't need a DC. We got a decent name with a decent resume. Yeah, he was out of work but you are fooling yourself if you think a Miami in the ACC with Al Golden as the head coach was a team built to win national titles.

Somebody I had ever heard of was the main qualifying factor of what I was looking for in a DC....and it seems that we have done well there.

It sucks that it looks like Marcus Freeman isn't sticking around but I don't think he'll do better than position coach or maybe DC at a MAC level school.

It just seems like all people want to do is bitch on here. Looks to me that we upgraded at DC and DL coach and people still want to bitch? Who should we have hired as DC? Nick Saban?

Someone that wasn't run out of town in their last job(Shoop/D'Onofrio)?

Did they genuinely upgrade at those positions? Especially DC? You had a guy that at least had experienced some success at FSU that had zero success at Purdue, and are turning to a guy that had almost zero success at The U with far more talent and skill and that is an upgrade?

First, the primary issue is the HC and not either of the coordinators...there is not a DC in the country that could/would have had success with the lack of talent that exists due to a complete inability to recruit and even less ability to actually develop players...and the same could pretty much be said about the OC and that side of the ball as well.

Purdue got two guys that were out of jobs due to an inability to be effective at their jobs...so ineffective seemingly that they had no option but to take an undesirable job at Purdue under Hazell...it has nothing to do with whining and bitching, it is simply the fact of the matter.

Every career college coach has or will be fired at some time. Hiring someone who was recently fired by itself shouldn't be a concern. Their body of work as a coach is far more important. On paper, based on our status as a program, these two guys seem to be about what we should've expected. In fact, I think we've upgraded.

From Miami fans, he sounds like the John Shoop of DC's.

The first comment is not entirely true, but I understand your point...that said, generally speaking, if a coach is a quality coach and is fired somehow as a result of the staff being fired in its entirety, that coach is generally in demand and that certainly does not appear to be the case with respect to either of these hires. Again, if you can't have success with the incredible abundance of talent at your disposal at a place like the University of Miami...really tough to imagine a great deal of success taking place with far less to work with in arguably a far tougher conference. I don't disagree that it might be what should have been expected...but that has more to do with the status of the program due to the lousy job done by those overseeing it than it does anything else.

They could have been worse certainly...heck, they were, when he made the initial choices that he did in Shoop and Hudson...again though, with the talent on hand, inability to add to it and the inability to develop it, I don't know that it ultimately matters who occupies the positions or has the titles. At least they finally have a QB coach...made absolutely no sense that they did not previously, particularly given all of the issues at the position.

We were, and still are, going to suck next year, no matter who we hired, because of the dearth of talent on the roster. That leads to my question: are these 3 new coaches at least good recruiters?

Im willing to give our new OC and DC a chance to work with what they have. If we don't see results Hazell will be canned and we start the process over again. A one year trial is fine by me. I would much rather with than Hazell than go through another crappy year. He is a CEO coach so he relies heavily on OC and DC for results. I think Malone may surprise.

Wait, we gave these guys 2 year deals?

We have at least 6 wins worth of talent on this roster next year. It's up to the coaching staff to get us there or find new employment.

That tells me Morgan maybe planning on keeping Haze around 2 more years.
I said two years as I am assuming Hazell gets two more years. If he won't pay the $6 million buyout, he won't pay $4 million. Also if Burke has two years left I can't see him picking next football coach. I really believe DH wins 3-4 which is "progress."

Disagree. We are going to get MURDERED by anyone with a semblance of a passing game. No pass rush, and no B1G caliber DBs, due to Derple Haze's horrific recruiting.

After having read your post I conclude that YOU are bitching .

Let me guess, it's ok as long as you are doing the bitching?

This is a commentary forum so yea, you can express your thoughts equally along with everyone else.

Get over yourself.

Every fanbase, regardless of recent success, hates either their OC or DC.

100% correct.

It's far more common for it to be the OC, though, generally because most casual football fans think that calling offensive plays is something that they could realistically do and be good at, even though they've never actually done it. Kind of like refereeing basketball.

I almost think these hires (Malone, Melvin, Lester) would have been better received if he hired these people 3 years ago.

Absolutely true. Too many of us have reached the point of no return on Hazell. But I at least believe these guys are an upgrade and the schedule next year is the easiest DH has had. If he can't get 6 wins, the whole thing should be blown up.

18, So true....Names mean nothing, results do. Make your peace but lets all get out of BITCH MODE!!!

So basically just like IU, who made a bowl game this year the last time I checked.
IU has a really good offense. I would say significantly better than ours.

I don't see 6 wins. EKU. Maybe Maryland in that they are in year 1 of rebuild. Maybe Cincinnati as the arrow could be starting to turn down. That is about it.

Nevada has a lot returning.

You could say Illinois, Minnesota, IU but all 3 on the road, all three bludgeoned us this year.

Penn State is not Michigan State, but still tough.

Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern and Wisconsin are not unbeatable, but much better than us.

4-8 is about the ceiling with this team.

My friends in NY who are huge Orange fans have told me that Lester stabilized a QB situation that was headed for disaster....Sounds like a upgrade considering our QB situation was .........merely mismanaged.Wink Wink

I've heard the same thing and wasn't the QB a walk on too?

Good coaches get let go when head coaches are fired. I watched Cuse a few times and said damn...we'd be a lot better if we had their offense so hopefully Lester can rub off on Malone a little too.

I'm reserving judgement til we actually play...but I am wxcited that the offense will be more down, distance and scheme driven than it used to be when weird beard would sit in "the lab" all week, draw up plays and then call them randomly even when score, situation, down, distance and common sense dictated something else.

But DH said last week we are going to run when a pass is expected, and pass when a run is expected. So I am thinking up the gut runs on 2nd and 11, and go routes on 3rd and 2 are in the offing.

Hot Damn we've got a game plan now!!!!
Hit them high,Hit them Low....hit them were the berries grow Go.........Darrell !!!

Or that is what the market is dictating. Most schools sign 3 year deals with assistants
I thought I read that neither Shoop or Hudson had buyouts. I'm pretty sure they were employment-at-will hires. So even if they had a contract, a contract with no early-term buyout attached to it is basically the same thing as your typical non-exec employees in any industry.

RW... Does 4-8 save DH`s job???? Is that a 4 or 2 million dollar question???
