Matt Painter is befuddled and his team is quiet

"We want to save all the animals."

Matt Painter might not ever get through to the NCAA but he has a talented team and he's trying to get through to them. Not about animals so much, but he definitely needs them to be more.

That’s why I wish Gillis was allowed to return for his Covid season. I understand why Matt wanted him to move along but in his case he should have been welcomed back.

It’s a good problem to have. It is easier to bring high character guys out of their shell as they gain confidence than it is to turn low character guys into high character guys. Right now, Purdue has two vocal leaders in Braden and Fletcher, from what I can see. Other guys will need to emerge and I am sure that they will over time.

What is it you understand about Matt "wanted him to move along"? He never said or implied that anywhere that I've seen. I can't imagine Matt (or ANY coach) wanting a 5th year starter on a national finalist that is your toughest guy to leave. Ever. There is/was talent waiting to play to be sure. But we haven't seen ONE Mason Gillis level pick this year yet. And nobody will play defense this year in the paint to match him. He left because other team(s) saw his value and recruited him. And paid him.

It's been said here before, but in spring 2023, Coach Painter said to Edey, Gillis, and Morton that he would keep a spot for them the 2024-25 season, but they needed to let him know (so he could recruit accordingly). They each declined to take their Covid year here.

My understanding is that this is accurate. Even after last season had either Matt or Mason said to the other that they really wanted Mason to stay I’m sure they could’ve figured it out. Team could use Mason this year, particularly in the early going, but this is better for both sides longer term.

would have been nice to have Mason for one more year but I think Matt was directing some of his comments to guys like Furst and Heide who have been somewhat passive so far in their careers and is playing the Frosh instead but we are getting results of a young team due to some upper classmen not having an upward projectory

Yeah for sure. I just don’t think Mason would have been seeing 20 min a game this year like he did last year and at Duke this year.

He’s only playing about 18 so far with Duke, I wonder if after Catchings left if Painter would have welcomed him back?
not sure Mason would want to play on this team. I don’t know where he fits in. I guess he could have backed TKR again…but I’m not sure he would have wanted to play 12-15 min this year on a team that is young. He made a great choice for himself—career wise and future wise, to go to Duke.

I like the idea of keeping the current group, with the exception of Furst, together for 2 years. I am not looking past this season at all, but if this group stays together and the freshman bigs develop as I expect them to, next year might be a national championship favorite. As much as I loved Gillis, it might be best that TKR is mostly at the 4 and the bigs are getting valuable experience.

Edit - Hadn’t seen the Jacobsen news when I posted this.

How is it better for the Boilers longer term? That's only possibly true if one of the replacements steps up and becomes even more important than Mason was. And that's not a given.

Woah where’d you hear/see that

Interesting, I think the Tibia is the main bone the Fibula being the smaller one of the lower leg

Since he had some minimal weight on it, doubt it was a complete break, but one of the many, many types of fractures.

Best of luck on his recovery. Tough luck.

No, he left because he had been here 5 years and he wasn’t going to get the same playing time/role and more than likely wasn’t going to go to a F4. Paint has said if they weren’t going to come back, he wanted to make sure they hit the portal asap and get paid.

He complements the Duke pieces way better than the current Purdue pieces. It was a great decision for him to move on.

Paint said that if any of the 3 wanted to return, he would have taken them instantly. But he wanted to know at beginning of season…probably for recruiting.
