If our guards can’t contain the dribble, we will continually put our bigs in bad positions. How many pick and pops can we see?

You must have forgotten that we played in the Summer games. So our defense should be February defense already. However this is the way it always seems to go in the B1G. It's never easy no matter how much you prepare.

...and somewhat of a trap game...beat U of L ...beat Maryland and knew this onw would be easier. NW hit some big shots, but I think PUrdue had a bit of an emtional let down...it happens..coaches hate it and try to prevent it...it happens.

PU just played their nuts off Fri. night.......and now their nuts off on Sun. afternoon ..........they've had a tough stretch the last 10 or so days

Next we may hear about Mathias being no good, misses his shots, and his slowness almost cost the game.

Then how Haas missed easy bunnies and missed three free throws..

Oh, u picky brother..

not sure it's on the guards in pick and pop situations, in general though i think Purdue makes the mistake of extending the defense too far.

Considering how far out players shoot 3 point shots now, I see why Purdue extends their defense. Plus I like getting in the point guards face, this has to effect their ability to pass and see open players.

Purdue has the 23rd ranked defense (of 351) according to KenPom. They must be doing something right.
I think that it’s easy to lose perspective and lose sight of how well this team defends. Purdue doesn’t have tremendous quickness or great length on the perimeter, but what Purdue does have is a group of highly intelligent players who buy into the team concept and play as a cohesive unit. Northwestern was given nothing easy last night except the Pardon jump shots that Purdue was intentionally conceding. Northwestern kept it close with some outstanding individual efforts, but in the end, Purdue did what it had to do.

I hope it’s a long season, but my definition of a long season may be different than the OP’s.

Plus, Northwestern is fighting to change the trajectory of this young season. I'm not at all surprised we took a punch from them on Sunday. It might be just the first weekend of December, but there was a definite sense of urgency in the way they played most of yesterday's game. They're a competent team with a competent coach. They're not going to just go away.

You do realize that all defenses have to give up something to get something, right? To stop the 3-pt shot, we crowd the guards on the outside. That makes us susceptible to pick & pops and pick & drives. The drives run into our post defense which managed to swat or change the trajectory of most of NW's shots. That was a really good strategy.

Opponents run Pick & Pop against us because that is all we give them. Those are often low percentage shots because the shooter is moving and must turn and shoot before our man comes up. What was the percent NW shot? It wasn't very good. When they set a moving pick, they got their shots, but eventually the refs call those and opponent post players are usually in foul trouble playing against Haas anyway.

To your point, did we have any of our post players foul out? How where they put "in bad positions"? I think your concerns are overstated in this case. Pick & pops don't usually involve the post guys. Of course, we could run into that team that can hit those Pick & Pops consistently. Then we might need to change defense strategy.

I didn't forget. Yes, that was good experience, but to equate it to being 2+ months ahead of schedule is a bit absurd. Not to mention a guy like Haarms didn't even play.

Right now, we have an advantage shooting the ball. Purdue has to keep FG attempts close to their opponents. We can shoot 50%, but if the other team has 5-10 more FG attempts, it's going to cancel out solid shooting. Our opponent's shooting percentage is nothing good, but our opponents average over 5 more FGs a game than us.
