Hello President Daniels,

I am a recent graduate from Purdue University (Class of 2014). If I have to withstand 1 more season of bottom of the B1G football along with Morgan Burke still being our Athletic Director. I will cut ties with the school completely. I am sick and tired of Purdue being the B1G laughing stock. I have 0 pride in my school because we look like clowns on national television. Either get rid of sports all together (like University of Chicago whom still has more national championships than Purdue) or nut up and invest in administration and coaching staff that can compete with the other schools.

How much money is Purdue leaving in Rose-Ade when 20k seats remain empty? How much money are we losing to alumni donations? Do you think MSU is weeping over all the money they have gain from investing in Football and Basketball. I use MSU, because they are almost identical to Purdue. While Purdue was penny pinching and letting it football team turn from best in the B1G to annual cellar dweller, MSU was continually getting better. Purdue basketball had the same problem Morgan Burke sitting on his pocketbook while all our competent assistant coaches left either taking lateral or upper moves for more money. How can Purdue expect to be the best if we continually see that we are not retaining our best.

Keeping the Burke Administration is disrespectful to both us Alumni and Purdue's nonalumni fan base. We don't want apologies and excuses we want actions.

Sincerely anyone still watching the dumpster fire

Only if you had the balls to actually send the email or actual letter.

thanks, I plan on emailing Burke as so should everyone else on this forum.

Excellent letter, except I'd point out that Morgan is not the only problem -- the BOT is even worse and MD appointed most of them. So let's see if we can wake MD up -- and if not, don't cut ties, let's work together to drive out MD, MB, and the BOT! I'm a third generation Boilermaker. Purdue changed the trajectory of my family's life. I refuse to allow some Princeton grad and a bunch of politically-connected appointees to determine whether I honor my grandfather and father by supporting Purdue. But I sure as HEck will fight these idiots every step of the way to aid the eventual resurgence of Purdue football.

President Daniels didn't reply to your letter? The misuse of the word "whom" notwithstanding, my guess is he has little time for anyone who would disassociate himself from his Alma Mater because of the results of a sports team. If the pride you derive from being a Purdue University alumnus rests solely in the hands of a glorified Physical Education teacher, you have some issues with priorities.

Mens BB and Football are like front doors to the University. Losing regularly in football does not help the national image of Purdue as a school. People like to be associated with winners. Purdue is a good academic institution, and is often rated 50-60 overall. It is rated in the Top 10 in areas like Engineering, Pharmacy, etc. Don't act like Purdue is Stanford, Northwestern, or Duke academically. It's good, but it's not as good overall as those schools.

While the OP's letter may have been worded more tactfully, his position, like it or not, is representative of a significant portion of the fanbase. Who is anyone, including Daniels, to tell him he is wrong for how he feels? Sports fans are passionate about their teams, and even many alumni who are less passionate understand what a successful AD can do for a university as a whole. As a Big Ten school, with all the money involved, you cannot just act like you are Ivy League, put a poor product on the field year after year, and expect there not to be repercussions in things such as school pride and donations. If Daniels doesn't understand this, then he he is unqualified to be president at a Big Ten school.

For the record, I am a proud Purdue Alum regardless of the sports performance, but I will not hold anyone's allegiances or decisions about donating their hard-earned money against them.

I agree, well said, and I would add that first-class organizations usually take the approach that, if you're going to do something, do it right, or not at all. The state of our football program gives the impression that Purdue is just going through the motions and isn't committed to being competitive with its peers. And right or wrong, that leads a lot of outsiders to wonder if Purdue University doesn't have the same attitude about its academics.

If you think the athletic success of the schools in the SEC is an indication of their "attitude" towards academics, you are nuts. Been going to Purdue game for fifty years, but step back from the ledge people. It's for entertainment purposes only. No one in the world that matters will take your degree any less seriously if your football team sucks for another decade straight. Get a grip.

Clearly I wasn't implying that everyone, or anyone, thinks a great football program somehow signals academic quality, but as I said, "right or wrong," playing the conference clown in the highest profile sport can lead some outsiders to wonder about an institutions commitment to quality in all areas. The larger point is -- why bother if football is nothing more than embarrassment for the alumni to endure? The obvious answer is, to secure a share of the BTN money for supporting the non-revenue Olympic sports. IMO, that is, in fact, the only reason Purdue University fields a football team, and it explains MB's and the BOT's business model for Purdue sports.

Morgan often replies to emails. I've emailed (positive and negative) and have received replies. Some more professional than others.

thanks

And just think of the exposure the university gets if they air on national television. If our football team was any good we would have games on ABC. Now we are mostly on BTN which isn't bad but not as good. Sports do play a big part in colleges. Ours just happens to have a sucky football program.

Ok, but I wouldn't say, "ours just happens to have sucky football." We suck at football because of a series of myopic decisions that led to under investment in football, in terms of coaches' salaries and facilities, for at least a decade -- when MB thought he was Brad Pitt playing Billy Beane in Purdue's version of "Moneyball."

E-gads, did someone say sucky? We're getting really expressive now:)

awesome quote. You just got me fired up!
I live in the south now and I ride proudly with all the Purdue stuff on my car but it's hard to get ANY football respect for Purdue down here in SEC country, that's for sure.

AMEN brother. AMEN. This is the kind of action every student at Purdue needs to take right there. Letters to all these people. Especially letters to the Board of Trustees. Mitch is nothing more than a PR person. Go above him. Go to his superiors. Go to the Board of Trustees and mail letters to all of them. Send them emails. Let them know what a disgrace these people are. All students and alumni of Purdue are sick and tired of this problem that has gone on for a very long time now. There are no excuses. It is time they fix this problem, it is a matter of public relations. We need a dedicated athletic director who can complete ALL phases of the football project, and who understands football, its potential revenue making, its problems, and its overall potential to enhance university life and desirability. If Notre Dame can have a football team there is absolutely no reason Purdue (a public school) of greater size and student body, should not be able to do THE EXACT SAME THING. All they had to do is put together top facilities and to set a basic example for student athletes of quality to be interested, and it would have been game over a long time ago. We need smart people in these highly paid positions who are dedicated to optimizing Purdue. We do not need people being paid that kind of money setting examples of mediocrity and spiritual weakness in this area. We need winners, we need inspirational leaders, not losers. Get them off the campus. As a stakeholder of Purdue all students should be vigorously dedicated to the replacement of these old hags with winners and people who care.

I'll find them. For now, here is one everyone can use. Leave them voicemails too. Let these people know you aren't going to sit here and tolerate being trampled on every weekend like we are some patsy to a Michigan or an OSU. That isn't the purpose of being a student. That isn't the purpose of our existence. Make that very clear to them. I will also write some letters to these people and send a plethora of emails to all of them. Here is a link everyone can start off with. I am going to research everyone of these board members and find out who will listen, and contact information is coming. I have seen enough of this lousy administration and these people need to hear what the community really thinks of this crap. It is outrageous that these people have failed initiatives at this school, not just limited to athletics, but as well as many areas academically. Let these people know. Step 1 email this link. Step two phone calls to all of them. Step 3 letters to all of them. Step 4 former board members will be contacted. It is unacceptable that this is the kind of example they are setting in a competitive setting. It is unacceptable with their lazy and unaggressive approach to improvement. It is unacceptable that we can't win a single big ten football game. That current upper classmen at Purdue have only seen 1 lousy big ten win in their entire academic career. And say what the hell does that do to enrollment and college retention numbers. And let them know. Hey they work for the stakeholders and they better get that through their head.
