Les Miles potentially available...

His offenses are almost as bad as ours but I would still be happy to take him over the mess we have now.

If everyone is complaining about Hazell's lack of willingness to run the spread, they would definitely be moreso if Miles was the coach. On the plus side he may bring Etling back into the fold . Let's wait for Mark Richt to be freed up by UGA and bring him on as AD and let him make a hire for us.

I believe there is a huge difference between Miles/Richt and Hazell. Both have potential top 10 programs year in year out and could out recruit Hazell without stepping off campus. Neither will come to W.Laf but does this open up the chance for Hazell to steal Orgeron away from LSU and make him top recruiter?

Ed wants his own gig. He isnt going to be an assistant for a lame duck.

Interesting thought there. Why not make Orgeron the DC and head coordinator and if things with Hazell don't pan out, you give him the ropes midseason next year to see if he has the chops at Purdue? The bad thing is that Purdue's bye week is only week 3 so Purdue would have to be a total dumpster fire the first two weeks against Eastern Kentucky and Cinncy for a change to be made at that point, but possibly after the Illinois game. If Hazell is in fact back next year and the team is 1-4 through the first 5 games, make a change even though there is no bye week.

I understand that, but would you take slightly boring and winning 8-10 games a season or boring and winning 2? I think that's a no brainer.

He's winning with top talent. Teams like LSU and OSU can play vanilla because of the talent gap between them and most opponents. Purdue needs an innovator who can create a good offense with 2-3 star players. Once the wins come so will the recruits and then you maybe able to take the program to the next level. Les Miles isn't going to step onto Purdue's campus and start hauling in 4-5 star players (he isn't going to step on to Purdue's campus period but for sake of discussion I'll humor the OP). I share the same opinion about guys like Tressel and Pelini. Hazell is just a poor man's, correct that, a poor poor poor poor poor man's version of those coaches. No innovation just vanilla game planning and system. Thinking that talking tough and the right player mentality is going to overcome the talent gap, which is great and getting greater by the day, between Purdue and the majority of it's opponents.

We need another Tiller, not another Akers.

hey phila, do you think Chip Kelley comes back to the Birds next year?

your theory doesn't apply here, it would be like Akers. Texas and LSU gets superior athletes. The same is going on w/ the Philly Eagles. Kelley got all kinds of athletes at Oregon and just reloaded in his system. Now in the Pro's , it's harder to do and his teams look pedestrian.

Ha. Phila is my first name and last initial. As far as the Eagles I am happy they have one Boiler on their team. That is the only reason I care to watch any NFL team with the Saints at the top. Would Chip come to Purdue? Probably not. He will get the Saban treatment when he rejoins the college coaching community.

I think that this is right. Problem is that everybody is infatuated with celebrity until they have to deliver. When they don't you're sunk because it costs a fortune to bring them in. Although we paid a king's ransom to get Haz -- go figure?

What are people around here thinking? Do you for one second actually believe that Les Miles would ever come here. Put the pipes down and come back to reality.

In actuality, all I asked was if anyone would be for him to come here. I actually think he would be hard pressed to be successful here, much like Tressel would and Pelini (which many on here are asking for or have in the past). I would be for Bob Stitt to take a swing as the HC with his innovative spread offense but not sure Purdue would pull from the FCS ranks at this point. Possibly a guy like Kevin Wilson is what Purdue could hope for and that may be Major Applewhite, who is the OC/QB coach at Houston.

How many on here would be for Kevin Sumlin coming to Purdue as there are some heavy rumblings of Texas A&M possibly splitting ways with him.

I don't think he will be let go this year, but next year is a real possibility as they have expectations......realistic or not of winning the SEC West every year, even though they didn't win it when Johnny Football was there either.

I don't think it matters who the next coach is - or the one after that. Starting with Mollenkopf and labeling each coach as good (G) or bad (B), we have the following pattern so far.

GBBGBBBGBB

So between Mollenkopf and Young we had 2 bad coaches. Between Young and Tiller we had 3 Bads. Thus, we will have 4 Bads before we see the next Good.

Then again, maybe the pattern will be

GBBGBBBGBBGBBBGBB...

in which case we are due for a good coach next. So, who knows?

Hopefully someone has the feelers out to Kevin, but it seems like a long shot. He is a better option than anyone else we're going to get.

Obviously this was a little bit tongue in cheek (IMO), but the broader point is one of my made several times. We all want a new coach at this point but we have to recognize at best Purdue bats 0.300 on hiring good coaches. And that predates Morgan. I'm sure we are all willing to roll the dice on this but assuming everything will be fine if we just hire a new coach is misguided.

Pelini inquired about the S. Car. and they said No Thanks, Applewhite will go w/ Herman to the Cocks. Would love to get Sumlin. Still think we should try to get Mike Norvell.

This. More troubling, he's not winning with top talent. He's retired on the job. I think he's done.

We need somebody with vision and a system and a fire burning in his belly with something to prove. Les IMO has none of these. When his teams got it done, they were viewed to have NFL caliber talent. His teams overwhelmed with talent. But they were seldom entertaining to watch.

I doubt Les Miles or any "name coach" would "slum it" and consider coaching at Purdue....they undoubtedly have some pride. Coming to Purdue would be like them saying "I give up...I'm finished coaching a big-time program"...sorry, not gonna happen.

Mark Richt would be an interesting hire as AD. I doubt he would leave the south but, he would be on my list! We need a fball coach as AD.

No. Too old and isnt innovative enough. We played this game once with Akers.

Did Akers take his team to two championship games and have the #1 recruiting class the year he got canned?

Look we have zero shot at getting Les Miles, but saying you wouldn't want him because of a previous coach's failure is crazy.

No... Think of some former Daniels aide who will get the gig. Maybe a cabinet member who had Colts tickets who "knows a lot about football." Or if Mike Pence loses in November, Mike Pence could be the new AD.
Go back to the hell hole of the region.

Thanks for the bump! I am hearing a number of rumors about Les Miles being names the next Purdue coach. With who he can potentially bring in as his staff, it could mean a seismic shift for the University and the AD in terms of showing they are behind creating a program that is able to win.

If MBob wanted a way to truly distance himself from his predecessor's total lack of ability over the last 10 years, he does it with a hire like this where he puts every coach on notice that he isn't afraid and has the ability to get a well known coach.

I am hopeful that MBob is already speaking to potential women's bball coaches because as bad as football has been...the sinking of the women's bball program has been equally as bad. Missing out on Stephanie White and not firing Versyp last year was a joke...hopefully MBob can lure her back to campus or go get Katie Geralds (who just led her team to a national title).
