Looking back at Hazell and how he was allowed to coach his former team in the bowl game and the loss of legit recruits that first year, were it Painter on the hot seat and not going to be retained, would you prefer that he be allowed to coach in say....the NIT...or would you want him fired and an assistant take his place while the new search was going on?.

Me, I'd think the AD would fire the coach before allowing him/her to coach in a lesser Post Season tourney and would expect that to happen.

If this about Crean. He staying and rightfully so.
It's actually about any coach like Groce getting canned before the tourney.

And as I posted a week or so back, my only contact left in the IU AD's office told me then that Glass was not going to fire Crean and that Crean was coming back to Bloomington next year. I love how some over there are still saying he's gone.

I actually thought of this because so many on here wanted Painter gone after the past two NCAA showings and now you can't find any of those folks.

Honestly felt he deserved to be fired during the Johnson era. But they stood by him and let him rebuild. Now they are Big 10 champs. I don't base success off of 6 games a year.

Maybe you should ask that on Peegs. We prefer to talk about Purdue basketball.

I believe Hope was informed before the season ended that he would be fired at the end of the year, and he was allowed to coach the team in the bowl game.

My memory is bad, but didn't Purdue basketball compete one year in that tournament that is lower than the NIT and had a losing record? Like 16-18, but they said it would be a good experience for the players to participate and gan experience in a tourney setting?

As I look at Illinois, it was common knowledge they would receive at least an NIT bid. And you could speculate, no matter the outcome of their NIT appearance, it would have little impact on the hiring of their next coach. It's doubtful their next coach was going to be one of their current assistants. So why not allow Croce to finish the season and coach them through the NIT?

But my personal opinion is that if you know your basketball team is going to play in the post season in the NCAA or NIT, It's dumb and stupid to fire the coach after the regular season and hope the assistant can lead the team to victory. Firing the coach before the tourney does not provide any continuity or motivation for the players to elevate their game. I believe They would be more motivated to play knowing the tournament would be their coach's last game.

I'm up for almost any college bball talk right now but this is pretty out there. Why is there a thread about painter getting fired right now?

How about our projections for the big ten teams in the tourney?

Seems like the better teams have the worse seeds so it doesn't look promising. Be nice to see Minnesota avoid the popular upset and make the second weekend. I also think either msu or wisconsin is going to lose a nail biter against their 1 seed.

I think we'll see 3 big ten teams on the second weekend

Minny loses their first game. Write it down. UCLA wins it all. Purdue in Elite 8. I have a gut feeling this is the year a #1 goes down....Either Gonzaga or UNC. Personally, I hope both.

Hope didn't coach the heart of Dallas bowl. He got sent packing after the IU game.

Well, Twin, I have to give it to you --- that's one hell of a gut feeling to suggest a 16 seed that's 2 games above .500 could lock off Gonzaga. I have my doubts about the Zags, too --- but in the Elite 8, not the Round of 64.

Well, it could be UNC.....or it could be gas from last night's dinner. I believe this is the year....and I still have this feeling it's going to be Gonzaga.
