how about Fedora to Baylor then Fleck to unc.?That exact question smacked me across the face earlier today. The external environment is about as ideal as Purdue could possibly hope for in a football coaching search this off-season.
LSU was the biggest opening and they offered Orgeron pretty quick. Herman was the biggest name rumored that could be poached, and Texas snatched him up quick. Purdue has been a complete dumpster fire the past few years and it might still be the 3rd best program looking for a coach right now! (behind Oregon and Baylor at least). Houston is open, but its believed that SMU coach is their prize (a guy that I don't believe Purdue had any interest in anyway). There are a LOT of good - maybe not great - guys that Purdue should be able to easily woo.
As you alluded to, what else is there? aside from Oregon and Baylor, who does Purdue really have to beat out right now?
Well, if Baylor can lure Sonny Dykes away from Cal, that creates a different "competitor."
Are you suggesting that hurts Purdue's chances or are you just throwing it out for discussion? I actually think Fedora to Baylor would be good news for Purdue and here's why:how about Fedora to Baylor then Fleck to unc.?
discussion. Are you suggesting that hurts Purdue's chances or are you just throwing it out for discussion? I actually think Fedora to Baylor would be good news for Purdue and here's why:
1. All else equal, Baylor is going to get to pick their guy before Purdue does. It's a better program today, even despite the scandal. New coach, new president, new athletic department staff... the new coach won't be tainted by the scandal... at all.
2. If UNC coach jumps to Baylor, that's because Baylor is a better gig. Ergo, Purdue is now theoretically competing with a lesser program in UNC than they were in Baylor. If Baylor were to take Purdue's #1 choice, that might change my thinking; but if Baylor takes somebody not in Purdue's top 3, then that's a win for Purdue.
Why is unc football > pu football for a prospective hire?how about Fedora to Baylor then Fleck to unc.?
I have no idea, but having a lot of relatives in Tennessee who are Vol fans, I do know the Vol Nation is sick of their currentI missed that. Good choice too. Is he going to Oregon or waiting on rocky top to open up?
I never said it was, just thinking of coaches that may jump around. Why is unc football > pu football for a prospective hire?
I don't think Fleck is at that level and they are going to be aiming a lot higher.
I honestly don't get the appeal of Baylor over Cal. With the cloud over Baylor, the uncertainty of the Big 12, I just don't get what would make them attractive to a current P5 coach. Just can't imagine how bad their current situation with the school and AD would have to be for Baylor to look like a step up.
So, who meets Knight's job qualifications? No one currently looking for a job, that's for sure. How likely is it that Oregon could pry Saban or Meyer away from their current gigs?
Because those are the only 2 names that fit the bill. Not gonna happen. But, maybe I'm overlooking a viable candidate.
Not sure why Carroll would leave Seattle for a college gig. I'm sure Paul Allen can match Phil Knight on the pay scale, so money wouldn't be the reason.Pete Carroll

To be honest, I'm not sure Purdue was that much less of a dumpster fire pre-Tiller than Baylor was pre-Briles. Purdue had been to 1 bowl game in the 16 seasons before Tiller and they lost it. Were they getting their teeth kicked in as badly in the B1G as Baylor was in XII? No, but they weren't exactly tearing it up either.Wrong. Baylor is completely toxic, and was a dumpster fire before Briles got there. And now with Herman at TX?? They will return to the bottom of the BXII as is their historical position (18-102 in 15 years of real BXII). PUR > Baylor.
The problem with Baylor is that they won't be a P5 program when the B12 inevitably breaks up. When GORs expire in the early 20's, UT and OU are looking to get someplace better ASAP. And no other P5 conference will have any interest in Baylor. Now a coach today may not care about 5-10 years from now but many will.To be honest, I'm not sure Purdue was that much less of a dumpster fire pre-Tiller than Baylor was pre-Briles. My point: Baylor - right now - is in a FAR better place as a football program than Purdue and I don't believe anybody without a Purdue/midwest connection is going to choose Purdue over Baylor right now, all else equal. The scandal, while terrible, is over. They have turned over the AD, Pres, coach, and others... nobody is going to look at the new Baylor coach a year from now and associate him or his team with what happened (assuming nothing else comes out subsequently).
Have you seen Baylor's new stadium....right next to the highway for all to see? Beautiful and totally first class. I believe they will still be a very viable location, they have tons of money, and they'll want to continue the success they've known. Don't count Baylor out for the SEC (if they want to expand), or even the Big 10.The problem with Baylor is that they won't be a P5 program when the B12 inevitably breaks up. Yes I've driven past it. Very nice. Thanks to Drayton McLane. I could see them settling into a Boise State BYU type program (with TT and TCU). But the SEC has zero use for them because they already have TAMU. They don't fit the profile for the B1G either...small religious school with mediocre academics.Have you seen Baylor's new stadium....right next to the highway for all to see? The thing about Baylor is, and you're right that they were a joke of a program, they have made some solid hires lately, and there's no reason to believe they can't continue to do that, even with a small enrollment.Yes I've driven past it. I just don't see them having a seat in the next round of conference realignment/consolidation. They will struggle to compete financially with schools that have much larger TV contracts.
Remember, as been noted already, Baylor has been a joke of a program until just recently. They're one bad hire away from being right back there.
