Kullen Neal or...

Wouldn't he need a year off for transfer rules?

I thought PJ won us a couple games last year. Johnny Hill was "full grown," transfer from a mid-major, and lost the starting job to PJ.

Side-by-side stats:

12.3 pts, 35.0 FG%, 32.7 3P%, 2.8 rebs, 3.7 asts, 3.3 TOs vs Mountain West
5.7 pts, 43.8 FG %, 41.5 3P%, 2.1 rebs, 2.7 asts, 0.7 TOs vs Big Ten

PJ is significantly more efficient a player. Do we really need those 6 extra points at the expense of turnovers and poor shot selection?

...bust next year? Desperately need a full-grown point guard for March.
Cullen Neal or bust? He's already proven he's a bust at NMU. Sure he had one solid game vs Purdue but that's about it. Why would we want a low shooting and TO machine PG? PJ is twice as good as this guy already. I'll bet Carsen is too. Weatherford could put up Neal's numbers if he was allowed to play for his dad and do whatever he wants.

Cullen Neal made more plays off the dribble in 1 game against us than PJ did all season. And I like PJ.

He's a good player on a bad team. Wouldn't be our number one option so i would expext his efficiency numbers to rise. Would definitely take him. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see him beat out pj.

Exactly NewPal. It's not about comparing stats. Neal would be like adding a taller Bryant McIntosh..a playmaker that we don't currently have. I'd take Neal in a heartbeat.

not knowing or discussing other aspects, your statement is true. Whether good or bad overall I don't know. I do think your statement is correct and I would not be surprised if Purdue currently has interest...

I like the idea of getting Cullen, but not sure how that affects our roster. We then have four PGs... PJ, Weatherford, Neal, and Edwards. How do we manage these players? Weatherford already redshirted a year, so he wouldn't likely do another (is he even allowed?). No point in going for Neal if we aren't going to play him right away (and again, he probably wouldn't come here to redshirt). Edwards could redshirt in theory, but if he's as good as everyone thinks and could make an immediate impact, it seems silly. PJ has two years in our system, and two years experience playing B1G basketball. While he is lacking in ball handling and penetrating, he's a good distributor, good shooter, and great defender.

So do we redshirt anyone? Or do we put four PGs on our active roster? And who do we play for how many minutes? And the issue doesn't go away the following year because nobody would leave...

We need to land some talent in 2017 where there are like 6 top 60 players in the state of Indiana (3 in the top 16 based on Rivals rankings). If he was a 1 year guy, sure, but we don't want to lose adding a really talented guy for Cullen.

Weatherford is a big question mark going forward. What are the expectations for him? You hear next to nothing about him. Taylor, Smotherman, even Carson E. people already have expectations for. Many are not satisfied with PJ. Does Grant do anything PJ can't do? I remember hearing comparisons to Chris Kramer. We can only hope he comes close as Kramer broke the mold. It seems if Painter pursues a guy like Neal it is a clear signal that Grant is odd man out.

So we bench Weatherford unless we need a lock down defender late in the game? And then he gets minutes in 2 years when PJ and Neal are gone?

Or else someone we don't know about is leaving.

That depends on if he accepts not being a number one option. The vibe I got from reading New Mexico's board is that he tried to do way too much and a portion of their fans resented him for being the stereotypical coach's kid who got to do whatever he wanted without repercussion.

yes, they hated him

So people think we should pass on a guy who would come in and be our best PG for 2 years just because we have PJ and two unproven Freshman (Weatherford and Edwards)? Do you guys want Purdue to win or do you just want Painter to coach like a 6th grade coach and give even playing time to everyone because they are on the team?

And who is it that meets that standard? I think the debate here is that some of us don't think he's much better than Thompson. It's not like we're debating Tyler Ulis here. Let's get a grip.

We need a player who can breakdown a defense and score or draw and kick in crunch time. I like PJ's game through the first 35 minutes of the game but my the last five. Wether Neal is that or not I don't know.

I like PJ alot, one of the guys on the team who improved their game since last year, but in reality, I think he's a 2nd string BIG10 PG who deserves decent minutes every game.

In fairness, I think Cullen Neal and Elijah Brown had to do a lot of the heavy lifting for UNM, in terms of scoring. That factors into a low FG%.

At Purdue, he probably wouldn't have to do as much.

Do you think painter would allow him to run free like he did at Mexico? I just don't see it. If he did decide to come here I don't think he would have any delusions about chucking a bunch of shots up.

The other vibe I got from the NM board was that several thought he was playing out of position at PG. I haven't seen enough of him to know whether that is a valid opinion or not.

that brought a chuckle not on anything you said, but that I wonder if they wanted a PG that distributed rather than scored? :)

Why did we bring Weatherford in if he isn't going to play. A waste of a scholarship. Was Painter that desperate? What all do we know about Neal?

strictly a guess...nothing more. he probably saw a place for him...and maybe an increase of Kyle Guy since he played with Cline and Weatherford...and so maybe there were a few things....but ALL that is just a guess...nothing more

Some guys you get and hope to develop. Everyone questioned Crean taking a unranked kid who had mostly mid major offers. Right now OG Anouby looks to be a solid pickup.

To be fair, I don't think PJ was planned out to be a starting PG, particularly as a sophomore. I think he was a "stop gap" add - and that's no disrespect to him. Quite frankly, he was a little low-key of a recruit coming to Purdue and I think he's exceeded expectations. But I wouldn't say he's looked at by the coaching staff as being their ideal guy in that starting role.

Who said he wasn't going to play? Breaking news: he redshirted.

Have to agree with this. I don't think painter ever offered Grant thinking he would be a guy he'll build his team around. Rather a guy who will come in and work hard for 4 years, listen to the coach, and provide stability to the program. As long as we only have a few projects types on the team I'm completely fine with the extra bodies. If I'm correct I believe this past season was only the second time painter's had a full roster since coaching here. Nothing wrong with getting these type of glue guys as long as he can balance it out with top tier talent.

When you have that many scholarships, not everyone can play. Given the depth Purdue has on this team, it was actually a small miracle that the team did stay intact. It would be very easy for guys to transfer out and understandably so given the lack of PT available. Not saying it won't happen in the future, but kids these days expect to play as a freshmen and what not. It's hard to find team first kinda guys. And if Weatherford turns out to be a guy that doesn't play until his junior or senior year, that's ok.

no crap, I know he redshirted. I was talking about next year. They will have PJ, Edwards and maybe Neal. I just don't see Weatherford getting the minutes?
