Andreona Keys didn't know how close she was.

But after learning she is only four points from 1,000 for her career, she's eager to get there.

"It actually matters a lot," Keys said this week, before Purdue plays at Indiana on Saturday. "I didn't know that, but to find that out after the game, I was kind of, 'Ah, (I was close) about it.' But to get that milestone, it's huge, because not many people at Purdue have done it."

Keys, a 5-foot-10 senior captain, would become the 32nd player in program history to hit the mark.

"It's a milestone that great players do here at Purdue and all over the country," she said. "If you get 1,000, it means you're putting up some points. I did it in high school and I want to do it in college."

Keys, playing most at power forward this season, is having a fine offensive year, averaging a team-bets 12.9 points on nearly 52-percent shooting. She's not always been a scorer, per se — this is her first season with a double-digit scoring average — but she's been consistent. And because she's contributed heavily in other ways since her freshman like, like defending and rebounding, she's been on the court often.

"I'm pretty excited for her," Sharon Versyp said. "She's played since her freshman year and just ben solid in every statistical category. I'm proud of her because of those attributes. Some come in as scorer, but don't hit the stat page anywhere else. but it's fantastic for her. ... Hats off to her, she's put in a lot of work."

Along with her 996 points, Keys has 556 rebounds, 279 assists and 145 steals in her career.
