K. Embery Top 5

We're hoping for Hauser, Johns and Dowuna, or some replacements for them. That would be 14 scholarships without Embery. And SURE, a bird in the hand is better, and there are no guarantees in life .....

I think after the visit this weekend, Dowuona may be the big man Purdue ends up getting. He war really looking forward to the official and I believe he had a great visit. He is a player who would fit a role immediately as an athletic big who can protect the rim who can use his athleticism to beat opposing big men down the floor in transition when paired with the type of guards and wingns it appears CMP is putting an emphasis on...Carsen, Eastern, Wheeler.

I think Matt got the best he could get during the lowpoint and budget a few years ago and those players dictated a style of play. I think in the three you mentioned that it is getting closer to the Baby Boilers in style and just looking for players to get the tempo he wants. Matt has never shown a tendency to just walk the ball, but when AJ and Haas are two of your better players, you include them in your offense. This group of newcomers compliments the existing

I thought Hauser was out of the picture for Purdue?

Johns is a wish list.....has CMP ever gotten a top 40 out of state guy? Low odds there IMO.

I believe Dowuona has a higher probability of being a Boiler.

As far as guards....college is a guard's game.....load up there.

This is why basing a player's worth on how many stars he has next to his name sometimes makes no sense. Painter has apparently evaluated him and determined that he is a talented player who can help Purdue. When he was a 2-star, many of the rating "experts" probably had not seen him. Was he a worse player when he was a 2-star than he is as a 4-star? Of course not. That's why, this early in the recruiting process at least, people should trust the coaching staff more than the stars.
OK, I give on this point as I agree about the low value of stars.

That could have been where I taught 8th grade history and had chess club before school. Created a four sided, team chess game with black, white, red, green pieces. Three extra ranks on each of the four sides of the main board. Took turns clockwise and battle strategy could be plotted away from the board. Or it could be played one vs three.

I don't see this as either a great fit for us or for him. He's behind Eastern and Sasha here, and not a great talent-fit. It looks like both Nebraska and Houston have a need that he might fill.

Embery is a long athletic combo guard. Outside of Phinisee, he is the only target that would be a good fit at pg. The question is, can he be better than Phinisee? He is bigger and more athletic, but Phinisee appears to be more of a true pg. It would be nice to have a traditional pg to play behind Eastern for the second team. Embery could be a very good fit. Very talented and underrated kid. He is a top 100 talent easily and will continue to improve. He would be a good get, especially since some people have toned down their desire for Purdue to get Phinisee. We could pass on a PG and hope for Francis (who is likely OSU or UNC) or Isiah Thompson (who is just outside the top 100 as well, but very good). It would be a good thing to sign him.

Soooo, we're supposed to ignore the star rankings and just go by the coach's thoughts? if we go by coaches' thoughts, doesn't that mean we should go by the offers a player receives? When my son played AAU ball, all of the big time coaches watched him play. And they all came away with the same thoughts and gave offers to Jabari Parker and Cliff Alexander after watching them dominate my son. . So if Painter saw Embery play, I suspect all the other coaches did as well. if Painter gives a player an offer, in most cases, other coaches will follow suit. I fully suspect Embery will receive a lot of offers soon.

In basketball, with AAU being such a big part of the recruiting process, I wonder about players who have few offers. With all the exposure given to basketball recruiting, I do not believe in hidden nuggets. I also wonder who are these people who give rankings and what their evaluation methods are.

My biggest question about Carmody, Embery, Phinesee, and Hunter , etc. is not their stars or offers, but rather can they become an effective combination with C Edwards and Eastern? Can they offer something we currently don't have, or are they more of the same?

Back in the stone age , when I went to school, we had a group of guards named Parker, Parkinson, Macy and Sichting. . that was a lot of talent including two NBA players. But that talent never meshed as well as it could have. I'd be willing to add a lesser ranked player, if he could make the end result better.

I am not sure how AAU in Oklahoma compares to Indiana. I live in the Dallas area and I don't hear much about it compared to Indiana. Football is king so maybe he is being overlooked by the Midwest schools and not getting the media hype. Not sure why OU and OSU are not in the mix though. The population is growing in these areas so it is good that Lutz and Painter are casting a wider net for talent here. I see Kelvin Sampson is in the mix at UH.

The title of this thread is about us making his TOP 5 so he isn't getting any additional offers

There are toooooooooooo many examples where a player announces a top 5, and then signs with somebody else. if Duke gave him an offer, he'd drop his top 5 in a heartbeat. Was Purdue in Swanigan's top 5? if a better offer comes along, he will take it. I've also seen many examples where Purdue was by far the best team in the top 5, and the player signed elsewhere. nothing is a given until the signature is provided. and if Painter leaves, even that signature can be changed, ala Tilmon, Porter and now Wright

Go ahead and give me a recent example since you seem to think this happens all the time.

I dont claim to be an expert in motion offense, but I never understood why one needs a "true" point guard in motion.

I'd love to see a class of Embery, Carmody, Anderson, Johns, and Dowuona. Not that all those guys will be Boliers, but I think it's a group that would allow Painter to do all lot of things, especially defensively, that he hasn't done since Chris Kramer was a Boiler.

That honestly would have the potential to be the best class Purdue has ever recruited.

If "true point guard" means a point capable of dominating the ball to run drive and kick then motion doesn't need it. What it needs is a point who can understand not only what he needs to do based on the defense being played on him but what his teammates will do based on the defense being applied to them.

I agree, but that applies to the wings in the motion as well. Last season, Dakota's and Vince's decision making was huge and Carsen's was an issue, to some degree.

Very true. Hummel is the ultimate example of the impact that knowledge has when more than just the PG have it.

CJ Hayes Purdue was in his final 5. after narrowing it down, he even verbally committed to Purdue. after verbaling commiting, MSU gave him a very late offer and he flipped and signed with MSU.

Beach. he was already committed . But Brohm came out of nowhere and signed him.

Tilmon had Illinois in his final 5 but when the coach was fired, he signed with Missouri who before ZO arrived wasn't even recruiting him. the same with Porter Missouri was not even recruiting Porter or even in his thoughts 6 months ago. yet, he still signed with them.

At the early signing date, Purdue was one of Epperson's final 5. but then something happened, and he decided not to sign during the early signing period with Purdue, and wanted to open his recruiting up to more schools. Lultz walked in after the early signing period and lured him to Creighton.

Xavier Simpson. Purdue was in his final 5, but not expected to sign him. However, he surprised everybody and picked Michigan which had not even been mentioned by anybody including him as recruiting him.

Bowen. Purdue was not in his top 5. But he was down to 5 and then when he found no takers, signed with Louisville. .

if you want more, Just look at Purdue's football team. How many of the players that Brohm signed had Purdue in their initial tweeted top 5? and how many that had Purdue in their initial top 5 tweeted teams ended up signing with Purdue?

Embery made an initial tweet of his top 5. it's a long time before signing day. I'm suggesting that top 5 may change 10+ times before that date as other coaches review his films, and make him an offer.

my son had a top 5. he signed at a totally different school in a different sport. Division 1 track instead of Division 2 basketball.

This is a basketball forum so not sure why you are bringing up football.

Tilmon and Porter switched because the coach was fired. Not sure that is the same thing.

Epperson had an offer in hand from Creighton.

Simpson had an offer in had from Michigan.

I asked for examples of a school offering after a kid made his final list and you literally couldn't. You just listed kids who had picked a school not in their "top 5" that they had an offer from.

I don't believe Bowen had an offer from Louisville. It was said he approached slick Rick and asked if he was interested. He got an offer and accepted. I didn't follow his recruitment so I can't remember if he was offered or not, but Louisville was not involved at all until the end. Even if that were the case, it is still only one example.

I gave great examples. Emery published a final 5. He's got other offers. so what happens if he signs with one of his other offers? Will you say, well he had an offer from that school and his final 5 was really a final 6? ? both Simpson and Epperson had narrowed their choices as well and when they narrowed their choices, Creighton and Michigan were NOT included at that time. Yes, they had offers, but they were not in their initially tweeted final 5.

Both Porter and Tilmon narrowed their choices. And the y both tweeted their final choices, and neither player included Missouri as part of their initial final 5. and they both used the NCAA escape clause to get out of their commitment. So ask yourself, why didn't those two players go the team that was #2 in their initial final 5? instead, they both went outside their initially tweeted final 5

. they were both late offers, and they selected them. there are 1,000+ more athletes that post on twitter and say I've narrowed my choices down to a select few, and even give a verbal commitment only to change that commitment to somebody else. And it often happens to the elite athletes who receive a lot of offers as Sophmores, and then really break out as juniors.

my point is athletes are constantly tweeting their final 5 - some do it once a month. and it's a total waste of time to go through players tweets to find out how many times they tweet their final 5 or final 3 or whatever. Their minds change all the time. Purdue had a couple of centers who couldn't wait for Swanigan, so found someplace else . There are many athletes who don't even post a final 5 or 4. it's kind of meaningless.

You can refute my examples all you want. But you asked, and I gave you some. And then you changed the rules after my reply. I'm not playing your game. and neither is nobody else.

It may be one example, but it proved my point. There are many examples of other athletes that nobody on this board even follows. Did bell have a final 5 ? Does anybody even know what it was or care?
