Johnny Hill

While i understand it is another warm body to play PG....He is coming here off an injury....Can't shoot the 3 and turns the ball over a bit....Also not a great FT shooter...Which i think is something you need when you play the point..And his stats from UT-A were not like he was playing in a major BB conference...I can't get that excited to have him only one year when we could of signed guy to be here 4 years to be molded a bit more

Totally agree.

It's too late in the year to pick up a stud 2015 PG. Win/win situation.

Nonsense - the kid is big and strong and a competitor. Like Octeus, he has one final shot to make his mark. Painter would not have pursued him if he could not help right away. He looked awfully good in the video.

For the first time in a long time, I am getting excited again about a Purdue sport. Get Swanigan on board, and we have the makings of a really strong program. Painter has it cranked up again!

We have four guards on the roster right now that will be molded for four years. PJ, Wetherford, Cline, Dakota. Two of which are true PGs, and two of which were signed with this class.

Obviously the staff thinks J. Hill will fit and bring what they think these four are lacking.

BTW - aren't there only 10 days left to sign kids for next/this yr??

He's better than anything we have right now. He's a good athlete that will play d and provide experience. With everyone else we have on the team we don't need a ball hog Ronnie Johnson type. He will fit in well and give us a boost for next year. I think we were lucky to get him, much like octeus.

But Octeus had better stats at a better program in a better conference.....And CSU went to the Big Dance with Octeus... I understand having another guy to give minutes too but i don't think he is going to come in and help out as much as Octeus did....I may be wrong and would love for him to make the impact that Octeus did for us

Good kid who will bring it everyday and add leadership and depth.

Welcome Mr. Hill...play your heart out and give it your all.

I think between him, PJ and Weatherford it makes the PG spot solid.

We have a deep team and solid at all spots right now...even if we do not add Swanigan.

PG: PJ, Hill, Weatherford
SG: Stephens, Mathis, Cline
SF: Davis, Smotherman
PF: Edwards, Taylor
C: Hammons, Haas
*Note: Add Swanigan and move Edwards to the 3 line or have Taylor split mintues with the 4 or 5 spot in case of foul trouble, matchups and to add depth.

Taylor and the juniors will dictate how far this team goes next year.

Stephens and Smotherman need to play like Juniors and their potential.

Boiler Up going to be fun to see.

Welcome JHill!!!! You have a chance to be apart of something really special this year........with hard work of course. Bring it baby!!!!

Does anyone have a scouting report on him? Or a highlight video?

I've tried to find info on this guy, but haven't had much luck.

What can we really expect from this guy this year?

Who was available right now to get? He takes up a scholarship that otherwise would have been vacant. There is no loss here, only positives. If he struggles so what, the spot would have been given to a walk on who wouldn't play. If he is good, then we just got a good player on a team that is incredibly deep and talented besides the position he plays. His scholarship then opens up for a 4 year guy next year (Simpson hopefully). Hill will be a very welcomed player here, welcome aboard. Let's go win a B1G championship and get to a final four!!

What a welcome. Idiot

Why do some of you have to resort to name calling when you do not agree with someone one here? I am pretty sure i wasn't trashing the guy...I was just saying....This is a message board... As i said i hope he does great while at Purdue.. So unless you are a 15 y/o girl on Facebook ...keep the name calling to when you are playing WOW online

Head scratcher

Not a head scratcher at all. Purdue needed another point guard and got one with an available scholarship. I don't know if Hill will start, but he appears to have good length and athleticism and he is saying all the right things. I think that Thompson, Weatherford, and Hill will all be given a fair shot at the starting and backup point guard positions and I think that the chances just got a lot better that nobody will need to be moved to point guard from a different position.

That's how some on here act when they feel threatened or insecure, like you do not love the 5th year CMP is bringing in, or your just flat out unsure what he brings to the table. I wouldn't take it too personally, he probably wasn't hugged enough as a child.

He picked us over offers from Illinois and Baylor, so He's not exactly chopped liver. And if he plays as hard as he claims he does, we will all love him.

Little nervous about the injury, but he sounds like a perfect fit for Purdue if healthy. CMP has done a great job in finding the perfect fit with both Carter and JO... I look for Hill to be another.

Welcome aboard the train! Boiler Up!!!
This is the way it's supposed to work.

"They didn't make me any promises, though," Hill said. "They just told me the opportunity would be present and as a competitor, that's all you want to hear. Being older, I understand that when people make promises to you, those things don't always play out as you thought they would."

Exactly. I would never claim that Painter is perfect, but this is where I disagree with many Painter critics. There's often an undercurrent in their criticism that suggests that Painter should be doing anything it takes (verbally, I mean--I don't think most Purdue fans would want him to cheat) to get someone to sign. But then what? If you've made promises you can't keep, how does that work out, both for the kid you've lured in and the players already here? Frankly, I think we lose recruiting battles for exactly the reason we see in the above quote: he's honest.

That's not sexy enough for some recruits and fans, but I'll take honesty any day over disingenuous hucksterism.

He's not coming here to play 30 minutes a game.

We need depth at this position and he provides it. And there aren't 4 year PGs to sign right now. Geez.

Well, they were looking for another PG and now they have one that could be pretty decent. I was kind of hoping more for something like a JC AA PG (particularly Marcus Johnson, Jr.) but maybe there are reasons why he is still uncommitted.

Johnny Hill played two seasons at Illinois State (one of them as Nic Moore's backup, I believe, in Moore's freshman season) and one at Texas-Arlington. I hope his shooting numbers can improve through dedicated work this offseason. The injury is a concern as well but hopefully he's 100% by the start of the season.

Has anyone here seen him play often enough to give an evaluation? Was he an athletic guard before the injury?

The injury was to his wrist......correct? And it seems to be a scar tissue type thing, in his own words. If this was a knee, etc. then I would be more concerned.

It cracks me up that some don't like this pick up but were all excited about possibly landing Persons. Hill is a much better option and a much better option than Thompson and Weatherford as well. If he doesn't start, it's because CMP decided to go with a Mathias or Davis at PG.

It always amazes me that the wannabe experts on here seem to know everything there is to know about everything, yet in the end are actually pretty clueless. This is a good grab by CMP and as you stated is better than PJ or Weatherford right now.

I'm excited about him, because he is good enough to take some minutes from PJ but he will still have enough to be able to develop

Yes welcome aboard to what many us believe will be a special year. Your addition is another piece to make us even better. Good luck and enjoy as Purdue will be involved in the national spotlight next season.

Is the injury on his shooting hand? I hope this thing heals quickly because he needs to have a good handle regardless of which side it is.

I for one am very excited about this commitment. Welcome aboard Hill! Boiler Up!!!

I know there were more highly rated PGs out there- but those players for one reason or another didn't fit the mold CMP was looking for. We don't need a stud PG for this season to stuff the stat sheet- we need a solid one who will do his job and let our bigs dominate the ball.

Hill is saying all the right things about working hard, blue collar, etc. He sounds like a Boiler to me!

I'm glad the coaches found someone that has experience and can definitely be serviceable.

As far as not needing a stud PG that is a major scorer or facilitator though, most national title winners have a primary PG that is one, the other, or both, so if Purdue wants to be the best team it can be, someone needs to step up and play really well in that role.

(starting PG's of title winners for the past 10 years)

2015 Duke: Tyus Jones
2014 Connecticut: Shabazz Napier
2013 Louisville: Peyton Siva
2012 Kentucky: Marquis Teague
2011 Connecticut: Kemba Walker
2010 Duke: Jon Scheyer
2009 North Carolina: Ty Lawson
2008 Kansas: Russell Robinson
2007 Florida: Taurean Green
2006 Florida: Taurean Green
2005 North Carolina: Raymond Felton
