Jamarcus Shephard a possibility?

OK the list shown below lists several good options but includes our old friend Jamarcus Shephard. He has been co-offensive coordinatory/receivers coach at UW and Alabama. I don't know if he actually called any of the offensive sets though.

Would you consider an offensive coordinator from one of the elite programs (Alabama, Penn State, Georgia, etc.) or would you rather have a successful head coach from a smaller school (Chadwick, Candle, Dickert, Helton, etc.).

As much as Shephard intrigues me, I'm hesitant to go with a coach with no prior head coaching experience.

No, we've now seen what a head coach without any prior experience looks like leading Purdue, and it ain't pretty. In one of the toughest football conferences, it will take a coach with prior experience for Purdue to be competitive.

It's kind of an odd list with at least 3-4 coordinators and Mullen, who hasn't coached in three years. I like Shephard a lot, but like everyone else, I'm cautious about elevating someone without head coaching experience.

Considering what we've learned from the last couple years and also the Hazell years, you have to get a current head coach who will bring most of his current staff with him. Our two most recent failures, in both cases were guys that didn't bring an intact staff that they had history with, with them.

You are better off as a first-time head coach starting at a lower level where you can have more time to build your staff to set you up for the next job because your success is dependent on those you surround yourself with.

Maybe as an OC, not as a HC. Too risky. Need as sure of a thing as we can get with this hire.

I can guarantee that you don't want the OC at Alabama. He was recommended for the OC job at IU by DeBoer and was terrible at IU.
