Jacobsen invited to U19 USA Camp

This is from a UK site, so almost certainly biased, but DJ not mentioned as one of the top two centers. On the flip side, it may be accurate that he’s shaking off some rust.

Moreno and Jasper Johnson will make it for sure due to Pope being the coach.

The article saying Morez Johnson was the best center is laughable.

Either way, it’s great experience for DJ with all the talent there. He either gets to play and gain more experience or he gets to be I’m back and build on chemistry with the team. Either way it’s a win. Obviously you want him there and to make the team.

I think Pope is a court coach, someone who helps with practices, not an actual member of the coaching staff. I believe the actual staff is Lloyd, Shrews, and the guy from Texas Tech.. Not sure how much influence Pope will have in roster decisions from that position and my understanding is they generally have pretty good processes in place to avoid bias, although I’m sure some sneaks in.

DJ beat out Moreno for a spot last year, but obviously will have to shake off some rust and play well in order to make this team. I agree with you that while I’d love for him to make the team, going through tryouts is a great experience in itself.

I wasn't clear either until you posted the X above regarding Lloyd being back as head coach from last year. That should be important for DJ as Lloyd will be aware of the value DJ provided last summer and obviously is open to playing a true big. I don't know Pope's coaching philosophy, but I'd worry that he or some of these other guys might prefer a 6'9" guy at the five versus a true center.

I also tend to agree with your comment above regarding Morez Johnson. He's a nice player, but the talking heads hyping him as the best big at the U19 camp are likely basing that on scoring and 'eye test' metrics.

They didn't even make the last cut that was 33 players in May.
Is it that they don’t want to play or what? Cam boozer is going to be a top 2 draft pick next year. Or is at least projected to be.

While still pretty good, His twin bro is not projected as high…kinda like cooper’s brother (Cayden is still better than ace id say).

Edit: or maybe they are just turning 18 this July so they’re on the U18?

His brother is not as good though.
I only read one article about it, and it also included in the story that Carmelo's kid didn't make the 33 cut either. So I couldn't imagine they all turned it down and then there was an article about it being questionable.

Yeah. Sorry I updated my post. They are young(ish) for their grade. Turning 18 next month so I wonder if they’re on the U18 team? They played on the U17 last year.

Demonstrating once again that most ‘analysts’ know who passes the eye test but have no idea what makes for winning basketball.
Ahhhh he had “a minor injury, not considered serious”…so that’s why he was “cut”. They didn’t want to take chance with him getting injured. Especially since their other center — Jayden Quaintance (a highly rated recruit that DJ beat out last year at U18) is recovering from ACL surgery still.

Are you buying it? I guess I do, because he certainly would have expected to make the cut to 18, but I definitely wouldn't put it past Pope to pull him if Lloyd was trending towards taking Morez and DJ.

An on3 article said it was (in his opinion) Morez, cernac (Houston freshman), Moreno then DJ…this was before the first round of cuts. So it just shows they don’t know 💩

I do believe Jacobsen will make more of an impact than Cluff overall and mainly because of his rim protection. Painter is kind of in the same position he was in when he had Edey and Williams. How does he split minutes between the two? Will he start Jacobsen if he is indeed better? Will he play him 30 minutes in a game if he's playing well? Will he hold him back any like he did Edey? I'm not saying Jacobsen will be Edey 2.0, but I do think he will be better than Cluff.

Yup we have been saying this
How does he split minutes between the two?
20/20 or 25/15
Will he start Jacobsen if he is indeed better?
Yes
Will he play him 30 minutes in a game if he's playing well?
Prob not this year
Will he hold him back any like he did Edey?
Probably but we will know more tomorrow

I think we all think that. Cluff is just more of a vet right now and DJ hasn’t played a full season yet. DJ has next level potential, but he needs some games to get up to game speed.

I think his floor is Haas. Which isn't bad at all. Better than having Furst at the 5.

DJ getting game speed and fully ready is why you might see heavier lean on Cluff at the beginning of the season v later. I also think it might be situational like the years with Trevion and Zach. Should be fun and only think it helps DJ in his development to have a vet like Cluff to work with and against day in day out.

Read that some were surprised he has made it this far and said he is still working through the rust and conditioning.

He might make it because of size and rim protection abilities.
For sure. He offers a completely different look than anyone else on the roster and played really well for the same head coach last year. Even if he’s a little rusty it’s probably worth taking a flyer on a unicorn when you have a 12 man roster.
