It's time again to give the benefit of the doubt and get behind the team just because

they are Purdue and we are Purdue fans. Giving this new team a chance and going to try not to let the problems of the immediate past taint my view going into this year. The schedule is manageable in my opinion and if they are improved and play well they could do better than most expect. If they are able to give us a reason to believe in them, we should let them.

I always look forward to Purdue football.I am behind the team but I am not going to get my hopes up.

As they always say at the start of a new baseball season, everyone is tied for first. I am ready for some football.

We have a better schedule than we have had recently. We have some experience and impact players, but not much depth behind our better players.

One of the most important things for us will be QB play. We always go as our QB's go. It would be an improvement to have the ability to go with 1 QB for the entire year. That has not happened since Joey Elliott. This switching QB's after a few games each year has our QB's always looking over their shoulder to see if they are going to be pulled out of the game.

Boiler Up!

More than anything, I'm resting my hopes with the new coordinators making a big difference.

I would say the exact opposite, its our duty to expect the worst and demand change.

Even if you subscribe to that philosophy, change isn't coming during the season. I think at least giving the team a chance each year makes the job look better to outsiders and makes recruiting easier. If you end up getting a change somewhere down the road, you want the job to look more attractive to others and you always want more recruiting interest than less no matter who the coach is. I have actually been pretty proud of our fans the past few years. I think they have really turned out pretty well for the team early in each season. It gives an indication of what the program could be if it gets turned around. There are fans out here willing to support it and invest more of themselves in it.

I used to look forward to college football season, now I loathe it. Being a Purdue fan is like having a loved one in an abusive relationship.

I think you referenced the VA tech game before... I was not prepared for that walk up crowd last year.
Hated waiting in such a long line but was pleasantly surprised.

Yep. Every year I can't help it...I get totally suckered into it. Let's win a few early and see what happens.

I swear there's a contingent on here who hope we lose so they can feel even more miserable.

Expecting losses makes you feel LESS miserable when you lose and better when you actually win a game. that's what you are missing. Only a fool would not expect us to lose almost every D1 game. Hating Purdue for losing is the only way for some to kill off the pain/shame.

I guess you and I have totally different outlooks on life. Good luck with that.

Anyone who voluntarily chooses to follow Purdue sports and gets pleasure from it is truly special. Most people around here are addicts who can't stop hurting themselves.

I don't voluntarily choose. Purdue chose me. It gave me an education that provides far more than I probably deserve and friendships and memories that I will never forget. For that I will choose to root for my Alma Mater and be OK with it. Feel free to root for whatever school you choose if your ultimate happiness is based on your school winning or losing. Notre Dame is always looking for more t-shirt fans.

You really think there are any bandwagon fans left? This board is like the dive bar at 11am onTuesday, no one here except the hard core addicts.

Just because you got your degree at Purdue doesn't obligate you to spend time on their sports teams, thats voluntary. Perhaps at a school in the South, or OSU /ND that is the case, but not at Purdue. Thats all voluntary.

I used to laugh at IU football fans on their board, all clueless and optimistic, now I see that this board is becoming just like theirs.

Purdue football will be whatever it will be. Few of us fans have any ability to change that. What we can control is our own behavior. I choose to give this team a fresh opportunity this season because, frankly, it doesn't hurt anything and it is far better than the alternative. That doesn't mean I don't remember the past but it does mean that if this team can show that it has changed then I'm not going to hold the past against them. I just think you're really confused between people giving a new team a chance to prove itself as opposed to projecting some sort of lofty expectations on it.

Nothing would make me happier than a return to respectability. I dont blame the players, I blame our leadership.

I'm the same way. Yeh, I may piss and moan on here a lot about the team and coaches but I still live and die with them every Saturday in the fall. I just want and believe Purdue can be great. I don't want our fans, admin, etc to settle for average or middle of the pack in the B10. I want them to set very high goals, have high expectations, be provided the resources necessary and be held accountable.

What I don't want and what kills me is watching them do consistently what bad teams do (turnovers, penalties, mental errors). That's so much more frustrating losing that way then just getting beat by a better team.

I have to agree with you on this about the fans. It seems that the fans always seem to come back every year and give the program a chance...but when it falters and shows no clear indication of improvement, they decide to stay home. If the team could pull off some wins and string together good performances for an entire year, that would be the best thing for the program (outside of getting Art Briles to West Lafayette, IMO).

Expectations of a winning season with Haz as HC is about the same as a bald guy wishing for a comb for Christmas. Pretty much gonna' be the same results.

Please don't pollute the thread. Nobody said anything about expecting a winning season, or expecting anything for that matter. I'm just giving them a clean slate to start the year.

Not trying to pollute anything. I would honestly like to see Haz and the team succeed because he appears to be a good guy who would/will represent the University in a positive light. If they don't win at least six this year, you and I both know his head is on the chopping block as it should be. And I've said that all along. My best guess....three wins max. And I'd think you of all people will not be willing to give the team and staff a pass for anything less than a winning season.

I'm not going to speculate on it at this point. Team has a clean slate with me to start the season.

Exactly my thinking. I don't usually make those things my recreational activities.

People love me at parties, particularly, because I am entertaining. I am not a follower and I call a spade a spade.

I follow our football program because I got hooked while at school, being in the same class as Brees. Having become a fan under Colletto, I saw the rise, and now the fall. I have too much pride to actually enjoy watching our weak weak weak team , at any level. They are a disgrace. This board is how I stay in touch. That said, each year I become a little more numb and I care a little less. My brother, who has been a fan longer than I , recently quit the site as well. The fan base is dying.

I don't like surprises, especially when they are bad news. If they are going to piss all over themselves every Saturday, I am going to predict that in advance, and I will hate them for it.

Hate is such a strong word. Don't hate the players who come here because they want to, or in some cases have no other viable options. Dislike the staff, or Burke who hired Hazell, but never hate young men who are trying their best, though that best may not be MAC good. If given the opportunity to play at Purdue in the B10, or at say.....Taylor University, which one are you going to take? Don't blame the kids for the offer given by an inept staff who can't recruit.
