Purdue had had higher seeds knocked out of the NCAA Tournament before they faced the Boilermakers, but it has been since 2000.
Here's a breakdown of Purdue NCAA history:
1969 NCAA Tournament: (before seedings existed) Miami Ohio upset Notre Dame and Purdue beat Miami Ohio.. Marquette upset Kentucky and Purdue beat Marquette to earn its first trip to the Final Four.
1980 NCAA Tournament: No. 6 seed Purdue played the first two games of the NCAA Tournament in Mackey Arena and defeated No. 3 seed St. John's in West Lafayette. In the Sweet 16, Purdue beat No. 2 Indiana, but No. 4-seed Duke defeated No. 1-seed Kentucky in Rupp Arena. Purdue beat Duke to earn its most recent trip to the Final Four but was beaten in the national semifinal by No. 8 seed UCLA.
1988 NCAA Tournament: Purdue was a No. 1 seed but did have No. 2 seed Pittsburgh get beat before the Sweet 16. Purdue lost to No. 4-seed Kansas State, a team it beat by 29 points earlier in the season in Mackey.
1998 NCAA Tournament: Purdue was a No. 2 seed and had No. 1 seed Kansas beaten by Rhode Island (remember Luther Clay)?. Purdue never got to play the Rams as it was defeated by Mark Madsen and the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal in games played in St. Louis.
2000 NCAA Tournament: Purdue was a No. 6 seed, in the West Regional and benefited from No. 10 seed Gonzaga beating No. 2 seed St. John's. Purdue defeated the 'Zags to face No. 8 -seed Wisconsin. The Badgers had disposed of No. 1 seed Arizona in the Round of 32. Dick Bennett's Badgers beat Gene Keady's Boilermakers 64-60
Similar situations, but Purdue failed to make the Sweet 16:
1990 NCAA Tournament; No. 2-seed Purdue was ousted by No. 10 Texas (can't forget Panama Myers), who had beaten No. 7 Georgia before facing the Boilermakers. No. 1-seed Oklahoma had been beaten the day before by No. 8-seed North Carolina the day before the Boilermakers were ousted by the Longhorns by North Carolina. Maybe history repeats itself on Saturday with the No. 8 Tar Heels upsetting No. 1-seed Baylor. (Thanks dtimke)
2011 NCAA Tournament: This one doesn't count because Purdue didn't make it to the Sweet 16. Purdue was a No. 3 seed and watched as No.-11 seeded VCU destroy No. 6 Georgetown. But two days later, VCU, a play-n team, pounded Purdue. But Purdue didn't get far enough to benefit from No. 2 seed Notre Dame being ousted in the Round of 32 by No. 10-seed Florida State.
