There are posters with unique views and theories on this board, so here's a legit question for them, and for all:

Is the earth round, flat, or some other shape?

FWIW -- mark me down as a definitive "round" guy.

It’s both. The overall shape is a sphere, but there are lots of flat places in it. The American plains, Colombian llanos, etc. Oh and don’t forget so on and so forth, and what have you, too.

It is a sphere lol.
A modified sphere because all points on the perimeter are not equidistant from the center.

You don't even know the correct answer to your own question, katBMW.

You would fare so much better in your native Clownpants forum, where you belong.

I’m pegging you for
1) an evasive answer on whether you think the earth is round or flat, or
2) arguing semantics when you know exactly what the point is but don’t want to answer because your take is embarrassing, or
3) an off-topic insult

Or all three!

I would rather not know what 'pegging' means in the perverted fantasy world you live in.

I argued at work a while back with one of those flat earthers. They remind me of the Flavor Aiders. He quickly found out that my hobby is astronomy, and of course, I destroyed him. After talking to this dude, not believing in the moon landings hand in hand. Did you know that these ne'er do wells meet periodically for a convention of flat eathers?

Of course I tend to believe the earth is round. But when you consider all the baseball fields, and all the softball fields and football fields and basketball and volleyball courts in the world…. Well that’s a lot of flat or mostly flat earth right there…

And it didn’t take long at all.
KatBMW asked a passive aggressive question and then didn't know the answer to it. His crown is safe even though you have entered the competition.

The answer was the third option, some other shape. How could you not know that and yet claim to be a student of astronomy (and history).

So you are on team "the earth is not round."

What other shape, pray tell?

Another bad look for IU's nationally acclaimed General Studies program, KatPeg.

It was prediction time yesterday.

The prediction for your take on whether the earth is round was:
1) an evasive answer on whether you think the earth is round or flat, or
2) arguing semantics when you know exactly what the point is but don’t want to answer because your take is embarrassing, or
3) an off-topic insult

And wow, did you ever come through. So far we have gotten through multiple evasive answers, arguing of semantics, and insults.

But this morning? Progress! You are currently at 'some other shape'.

We are now waiting for you to answer what this mysterious 'other shape' is. Is it the 'pear-shaped' title of your evasive video? Is it the 'perfect sphere' conclusion of your video; a semantic way of saying "round?"

Oh tell us @Riveting- ! What shape is our planet? Lolol

For all out there who are serious about the matter, think about it: the earth is actually a cube. But because it is spinning it gives the illusion of roundness at times. At other times, depending on the angle of observation it can look rather flat or almost flat. I don’t see the pear shape at all, unless it’s a pear with an extremely short neck. There you have it! Problem solved. Next question please.

Riiiight. Except for those crazy things called oceans and gravity.

So potentially a Comice Pear, but definitely not a Bartlett Pear? That tracks.

Dude, you have a learning disability don't you. Large objects in space like the earth, stars, and planets are round due to the gravity pull towards the center of the object uniformly. That is why smaller space objects like asteroids are not round because they do not have enough mass and the small effect of gravity occurring on those objects.

After the 'voodoo effect' post, I'm pretty sure that poster is kidding.

Large objects like stars and planets and even the largest of asteroids look round by virtue of optical illusions

But we now know that they are cubes
I thought they are stars and therefore star-shaped! Or, as potential flat-earther @Riveting- would say, "some other shape."

Ok, humor aside(maily), everyone knows the earth is round except for some strange beings who believe it is flat, or of a shifting shape like a bug ball of smoke or a cloud, and some really really strange ones who think it's a cube... But I think we can safely disregard them. Now the direct common sense evidence of sight shows that the sun rises in the east then it patiently travels through the sky until it sets in the west (you can actually watch it do this if you have a good pair of really dark sunglasses). Now at night when most of us are sleeping the sun is traveling under the earth in the dark( it has no trouble with this because it itself is so bright) until it get to the other side where it can rise again. It has been doing this for a long long time...

Was the Tyson video too complicated for you? If so, let me know.

I did not query what Tyson thinks. I am curious what YOU think.

And apparently, you think that another diversion passive-aggressive question is appropriate.

So for @Riveting- we're still holding at "something else" other than flat or round as the shape of the earth. lol

The Riverter is being nick picky in order to troll your question. Like the video states, the earth is not a perfect sphere, or as my man Tyson says pear shaped. But in general terms and compared to what the dumb flat earthers say, the earth is round not flat.

If you watch the actual Tyson video? He says at the end that the earth is pretty much a perfect sphere.

Ya know— scientist, not MAGA.

Did you, as a backyard astronomer, end up agreeing with katDim that the earth is 'round'?
Yes and no. Yes. technically all so called spherical objects in space is not perfectly spherical. They appear to be "squished". If you look through a telescope at the planets Saturn and Jupiter you can clearly see this. At first glance and I accept the premise when folks say that the earth and other planets are round, or spherical. The point is that they ain't flat.

By the way, if anyone that hasn't seen the planets Jupiter and Saturn through a telescope please get a telescope and do so. It's an awe inspiring experience. With a typical backyard scope you can see several types of nebulae, star clusters and of course most of the planets. With a decent size scope and a dark site you can also see a lot of galaxies.
