It looks like to me we have had the talent in the QB position at Purdue after all. Both Etling and Appleby will be starting in the SEC conference games this weekend. Appleby by injury to #1 qb and Etling I believe beat out incumbent. All we ever heard is that they both couldn't thrive in our system.
Well maybe during Shoops and DH's tenure, they will be known as the QB KIllers here at Purdue. All we saw and heard was, they couldn't read defenses and game never slowed down enough for them. Well we have been wrong. Glad to see they are surviving and playing in the toughest conference in the country.
Maybe we couldn't surround them with enough protection or having enough supporting cast but i believe when we decided to keep Shoop for 3 years sealed DH 's fate for the future. Neither one of them could figure out how to use their talents to fit into a system that would develop their skills and allow them to prosper. How do you keep a coordinator around that long with the track record he had and expect kids to flourish in his system. Coaching and knowing what you have and what to do with the talent you have is very important at the college level today, we just haven't figured it out yet!!

Etling has talent- he was forced to play in a poor system with a horrible o-line just way too early. He had a lot of expectations/pressure but simply was not ready. I wonder if he could have overcame a bad system had he kept that redshirt.

Appleby seems like a great teammate and a hard worker, but does not have the talent to be a difference maker. Maybe he will prove me wrong- that would mean the FL coaches had a drastic change on his passing abilities. I still think he will become an awesome coach and would like him back to be a grad assistant.

While it's impressive both these kids are starting this weekend, these SEC teams have had QB issues for a long time. Les Miles has had many 4/5 star QB recruits that don't live up to expectations in Baton Rouge.

coaching is a major issue, shoop was bad. A guy I touted last year, Joe Moorehead ex Fordham coach, got hired by psu as OC. Their no huddle offense has improved by leaps and bounds this year.

I think that too much is being made of Appleby and Etling at these programs.

Etling always had the physical tools but I still doubt his mental state. I don't think he was ever going to be successful here. LSU has him in a good place....protected by a GREAT OL, hands off to an elite RB and has some big, fast and physical WRs to throw to. It's a place where he doesn't have to be THE guy, he just has to manage the offense. IF your expectations for Purdue are to bring in LSU level talent.....adjust your expectations. That shit just isn't happening. They are THE program in a top 10 talent state. Doesn't get any easier to recruit then that.

For Appleby....the guy has had 0 success yet. He's won a couple games. He's a decent talent but has never shown he has the arm or is accurate enough to win on this level. We will see here in the next few weeks....but I also think people are rushing to condemn the current coach and staff because of the past. Sure, I think that Shoop sucked. I think that Hazell has a long way to go. He has 1 last chance to turn this around or he's gone. I think that this team and program aren't as far gone as some of you think. There is for sure some talent in the program....just need to develop it better....and then recruit better on the front end!

Nobody could overcome the system they WERE running. I don't even think what we are running right now is that great, but it puts us in a much better place to succede than last year IMO.

The next three weeks will make our new AD's decision either very easy or very tough. I don't think many will argue that on paper we have very similar or even slightly better talent levels than each one of those teams.

3-0- DH gets one more year assuming he wins an additional game
2-1- He needs an upset over Iowa, MSU, Neb..
1-2/0-3- He gone

I would prefer a new coach but winning those games would show a decent amount of progress. Odds are against it as we haven't won two in a row in a long, long time. The offense looked much better in a loss against UC than it did last year, just have to fix those turnovers. I think Blough is the right QB for our team and hope he continues to try to make plays even if it results in some mistakes.

I'd twist that slightly. I think that if Purdue falls flat in the next three weeks that will certainly seal DH2's fate at the end of the season. But, I don't think Haze can secure a fifth season just be bagging some of the lowest hanging fruit left on the schedule. He has to show some effectiveness against the meat of the B1G schedule.

Just my $.02, but I think he has to beat at least one bowl quality team and Indiana.

No offense, but this is old news. Drew Brees, Purdue god himself, would have struggled on these 2013-2015 Hazell/Shoop teams.
Purdue has always required above average QB play to compete with P5 brethren due to less talent/depth at the other positions. Shoop/Hazell exacerbated the disadvantage to the point where we can't even compete with average mid major programs and can hardly distinguish a good QB from a bad one.

It's impossible to read defenses and have the game slow down for you when you are constantly on the run and getting sacked every other down.

I think I will scream, Hazell has coached the worst 3 years of Purdue football and I keep seeing posts about if Purdue wins so many games then Hazell will get another year. Like what the hell, why not just keep him forever if that's the case. I broke down and got cheap season tickets this year, instead of the 50 yard line , row 14 I had before, but if Hazell is coach next year, no way I will buy season tickets, I don't care if Julianne Hough will be sitting beside me.

Barring some sort of Baylor-type scandal, it's a fact that if he wins 8 games he will be our coach next year. Agree or disagree whether he should be, but that's just how it is.

I could get on board with giving DH2 another year if he were to somehow win 8 games this year.

I just don't see anything in the last 38 games to suggest that's remotely possible. Nearly 60% of his wins to date have come against FCS competition. He's 2-22 in the B1G. He's yet to win back-to-back games.

Purdue winning 8 games this year would be as big a turnaround as Tiller's magical first year in '97 (against a similarly soft schedule). I'd gladly take it.

Fantasy time is nice , but lets get back to reality . If Purdue wins 8 games or more this year I will gladly go back to premium seats.
