Is Edey better than big Dog?

Zach is the most talented guy that's bigger than anyone else. Probably a pretty exceptional athlete for 7'4".
Glenn was an average sized forward that dominated. He was an exceptional 6'8" player.
Given that Glenn was just as dominant while not being any bigger than those he was going against gives me my answer.

Glenn would have excelled even more in this era as things on the court would be more opened up and help defense would have less effect on his play. Back then there were usually six players within a step of the lane. Much more physical play was allowed out front and in the paint. Most of the screening was off the ball as most teams ran some type of motion or a continuity offense like flex.

I believe Zach would have been successful in that era as well. Teams played a lot of 6'9 or 6'8 guys at center. He would have been able to be more physical because of the way the game is called. I try to think of Zach playing for Gene. He wouldn't have had the shooters around him that he currently has. He would have had Waddell and Cuonzo. Less space in the post to operate but still would be very effective. Defensively playing for Keady he would have been much more effective. Hardly anyone ball screened back then and if they did Purdue would have hedged it instead of drop coverage.

In the end Big Dog was better in either era. Zach is very good and when you consider Zach as a freshman, versus now it is amazing!
.

Big Dog played in an era when a majority of NBA lottery picks stuck around for 2-3 years. I think that he was more talented, but the gap between Edey and the next best player might be larger than the gap between Robinson and players like Grant Hill and Jason Kidd, who would be one and dones in today’s game.

I don't think Glenn would have even bothered with college in today's world.

Nope. Not even close. Played in a super stacked Big Ten. Quite frankly all of college basketball was filled with mega talent at the time. As the poster mentioned above a lot of future NBA players stuck around through their jr. Years. Glenn was truly the best of the best at that time in college basketball.

No. Big Dog was a once in a lifetime player. He averaged 30.3 points and 11.2 rebounds a game his junior year along with a school weightlifting record with a 309-pound clean-and-jerk. Dude was a beast.
Didn't know about the weightlifting record. For those that remember him, he was strong around the basket.

No. Edey is very, very good and obviously a throwback anomaly as well as a unique physical specimen.

Big Dog was better.

Our surrounding team is probably better though. If he had this team around him, it's probably a final four team.

Love Edey and all he has done for Purdue. Deserves every award and dollar he will receive. Glenn Robinson was the best all around college basketball I have ever seen. There was noting he couldn't do on the court. No weakness in his game.

I was adamant about Big Dog being better, but after reading other posts here, I have to go with Edey. The big factor is that Edey is eight inches taller.

I also think Dischinger, Shellhouse, and Mount should be considered. With them, we need to factor in the three-point line. I also remember watching our all-American guard in the thirties, and how amazing he was. He later became a good coach in Indiana High Schools, but being a pioneer, he went out to some Big Ten school way out west and was never heard of again.

Not even close. Big Dog was the most dominant college basketball player I've ever witnessed. Once he was past the half-court line he was a threat. I wasn't around for George McGinnis in his prime but I've heard some say he was the best they ever saw.

I was able to see Glen single handedly win a B1G conference title with an otherwise crappy team. Does he still hold the record for biggest rookie contract ever signed? Was it $60M?

Unfortunately, I think he took the money and got lazy in the NBA.

Crappy is an exaggeration but definitely Edey has a much better collection around him than Big Dog had.

Big Dog!! No contest! Remember Big Dog only played College BB for 2 years. He was the 1st player drafted in the NBA! I think he signed for $69 millon dollars. “Let the Big Dog Eat”!

Yep. Good handles, insane bounce, 3 point range, mid range game, post game, etc.

Correct...that $68 million was a record and he was in a contract holdout for $100 million his rookie year. FYI, that rookie contract still holds the record because first year players got a nice salary cap because of Big Dog.

Yeah Glenn was actually my introduction to Purdue Bball. Then I saw Gene and I was hooked.

Growing up in the 80's and 90's there just wasn't much non regional college on until the tournament. But i had a subscription to SI and they had an article about him. Then I watched him on CBS and espn a handful of times.

I actually only considered Purdue because of Big Dog - I wouldn't have even known about it otherwise. Wasn't overly thrilled to find out it was in the state of Indiana but what the hell.

So I guess I owe my whole career to Big Dog just like I owe it to the rest of Purdue,

I watched big dog dismantle minny late my senior year from the seat by the tunnel waved the flag. He is bar none the best I have ever seen. It would have been 94 I think last conference game. Just a man amongst boys. Really poetry in motion

Lol no. Edeys dominance is 75% due to being the size of a monster. But actually has skill unlike an Isaac Haas. But Glenn was a beast as a freshman and sophomore. Walked in dominant.

Glenn would have been a 2-time NPOY had he stayed in school for his senior year. And, he would have easily broken through the 3,000 point career scoring mark. Zach is special, but Glenn was otherworldly.
He would have been the B1G leading scorer pretty easily and Purdue might have actually won a national championship for once.

Does anyone remember when Purdue and the Glenn beat Michigan's Fab-5 at Michigan? He hit the final shot for the Purdue victory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was during spring break ‘94. We were in a bar in Key West with about 30 other Boilers watching that game and going crazy.

Edey is great for sure but he has a pretty good supporting cast,
Big Dog was a one man show.
He Was a threat from deep and inside. He could get his shot whenever he wanted.
Not to make light of Big Dogs supporting class but the team wasn’t referred to as the Big Dog and the puppies for no reason,
And yes I realize Purdue won the Big the year after Glenn.

That crappy team won 3 Big Ten Championships in a row. 2 without Glenn.

Glenn averaged almost 21 points per game over 11 seasons in the NBA. Not bad for a player who took the money and ran and got lazy. Lol.

I didn’t call them crappy.
And the years after Glenn the talent in the Big went way down.
