I'm drinking the Haarms kool aid

First chance to see the 2017 version of Purdue. I would agree, at this point Painter may have stolen another one. Time will tell but I was very impressed by his mobility and skill set for a young, tall player. He is a definite match up issue if he can hit some jump shots as he can put it on the floor pretty well. Needs some muscle but that should come with time. Could be very good in 2-3 years.

Gotta give Eastern props to he had some really nice plays. Hit a 3 which looked great and that dunk OMG. I bet he wishes he had that first one back lol. Really solid game from him to. These two are ready to play this year. Gotta imagine everybody else is going to take some time. If JT can actually stay healthy this team is deep. CE looks like he has made a leap, which is fantastic.

haarms and eastern looked good. most of the seniors phoned it in
Phoned it in? What a ridiculous thing to say.

Vince had 20
Haas had 14
Dakota had an off night but was still trying
PJ had 2 steals and no TO's and rant he offense wonderfully

Saying a senior 'phone it in' is just ridiculous to say the least. We had very balanced scoring in a game where newcomers played quite a few minutes. Did you even watch the game or let alone listen to it?

Let's not start anointing Haarms as the next (insert super tall European NBA player here). We've seen him play against 2 schools with no Big10 level recruits. Not saying he won't be an impact player but you have to consider the circumstances.

Someone said Porzingis already but I think he's also very similar to Dirk Nowitzki. But he shoots better and plays much better defense than Dirk ever has. In fact, the only Euro player that I've personally seen play who might be as skilled as Haarms at the same stage was Ivan Renko.

He will contribute alot this year , how much I don't know. We all weren't expecting much, it's obvious he has some skill. Just the way he moves at his height is amazing

Reflecting on this some more....I've gone from wondering if he would be able to fill in for Haas capably if JT can't make it back to wondering if he might not be the best of the bunch right now. Certainly, his mobility and athleticism compared to Haas helps on the defensive end. Not quite ready to say he is the equal to Haas with his post up game but he demonstrated some competence with that last night along with the ability to put the ball on the floor.

The other thing I think this does is open the possibility of sliding Vince to the 3 and going with a big lineup if we want to.....particularly if JT comes back. I don't anticipate that happening often because Vince plays so well at the 4 but I think having 3 competent big men would allow us to do so if we ever thought it to be beneficial.

I've been an advocate for Haarms at the 4 for awhile. The only issue is we have a lot of talent at the guard/wing position so minutes are tight. I wouldn't be surprised to see Haarms around 20 mpg though.

How bout the Big Boiler Ball line-up?

Nojel Eastern
Dakota Mathias
Vincent Edwards
Matt Haarms
Isaac Haas/Jacquil Taylor

One thing is that Coach Painter is developing much more flexibility with his line-ups...hopefully Purdue will be in more of a position to force/dictate mismatches than having to deal with them from the other way around....going to be a little different, but the possibilities are intriguing. So far, Matt Haarms is a nice surprise. Obviously, it's early....great to have the season about to start.....been a looooong wait since the Kansas game.

That would be fun to see. One difference between Biggie and Haarms is the body size. Biggie and Haas both needed to be inside banging. If Matt can play out a bit, spacing might be better. That said, we need rebounders in there, so who know. I'd still enjoy watching that lineup.

The possibility of all the effective lineups Painter has at his disposal has me positively giddy.

I know the talent level last night compared to us was quite the gap, but considering the slow start and we still neat score 100 is awesome.

Painter has something going here from a program perspective and I can't wait to watch it all unfold.

Recording the replay on BTN, am looking forward to see how well Haarms amd Eastern look and mesh in the lineup. I didn't get to see more than a few minutes of WUG, where Haarms didn't play anyway.

It's hard for me to predict how the NBA will evaluate mobile bigs, for example Meyers Leonard was late lottery NBA talent after 2 seasons at Illinois. DJ Wilson was just outside of lottery with 2 yrs of eligibility left. That said, it doesn't seem impossible that an athletic 7 footer could be drafted after 2 seasons.

I didn't take it as him dogging them...I just found the game boring and we all know what the seniors can do. I just wanted to watch teh youngsters and I'm sure will see teh fire in the seniors when it starts to matter. We know soooooo much about the seniors our expectations are high and yet THOSE seniors know those games are not difference makers and were probably not as fired up as we will see in 10 days or so...

Was anyone as impressed with the stats of the seniors over the "what ifs" of the youngsters? Just a human reaction I think...

Yeah, we should put both seven footers in the game together - THE TWIN TOWERS!

Why don’t we ever do that!!!??? I am going to call Painters radio show and ask him!!!

I don’t think that it was ever a very realistic option with Hammons and Haas, but Haarms is a very different kind of player and I think it’s possible that he might spend some time playing the four. Right now, backing up Haas is simply a greater need than playing him at the four, but the return of Jaquil could change that.

I'm not saying that both of them on the floor will be our best lineup but there might be situations where it is beneficial.

If you are going to go with big players first....you have to put Cline in there. He is 2 inches taller than Mathias at 6'6 I believe.
