If you could choose one Purdue player from the past (not named Brees) to help resurrect the program, who would it be?

Here are my picks in order. I based them on skills and qualities this team needs today.

1. Dorien Bryant: Great hands. Lighting speed that actually translated to the field. Very tough, could take a hit up the middle. Bottom Line: We need exciting playmakers to put people in the stands.

2. Kyle Orton: It’s easy to forget how lucky we were to have Orton. He helped keep Purdue football relevant after Brees. He struggled with injuries at times (hips, concussion) and he shared time with Kirsch, but he was a solid player that had national attention for while. (I think Blough can get the job done, so I'd take Bryant before Orton.)

3. Bernard Pollard: Toughs as nails. Hard hitter. Flew to the ball. Literally in on every play. Sure tackler. Exciting defensive player that put the hurt on people. Our current defensive scheme needs a powerful safety like this. We could move him around to help with the run and pass.

4. Anthony Spencer: Great pass rusher. Didn't always show up in the stat sheet, but he always seemed to make a play when we needed it. Showed a lot of emotion and pumped up the crowd between plays. This team needs to show emotion and a playmaker on defense, especially a pass rusher.

5. Mike Alstott: Clearly a great player. Could always get tough yards. A north/south runner. His style would be a total novelty in today’s game and be absolutely fun to watch, which would help win games and people in the stands.

6. Dustin Keller: Tough as nails. This guy could take a hit (hits that literally knocked his helmet off) and get right back up. He was sure handed and consistent. We need a solid, go-to guy that simply gets the job done.

Of course there are more, but this is a start....

Spencer over Kerrigan/Colvin/ayodele?

Don't get me wrong...I think Kerrigan/Colvin/Ayodele might have been better, but the emotion and playmaking at opportune times is something we need right now. Spencer always did that. I might even put Shaun Phillips here with Spencer. Nothing more exciting than watching a passrusher fly around the end to nail the QB on 3rd down, then pump up the crowd between plays. We need this.

We could really use Rod Wodson now on special teams and most definitely in the defense backfield,

Leroy Keys. And let him play both ways. He may be both the best running back and the best Defensive Back we have ever had, and I've seen over 60 years worth of them.

I think you rate Orton too highly, although I agree he extended the tradition built by Brees but as far as qualities needed now, he was no where near as tough as Brees. I still remember him crying on the sideline at Kinnick after getting his ass handed to him.

A story I heard 2nd hand, attributed to Greg Olson, was that Tiller had promised Orton's dad that he would not recruit another QB in Ortons class but out of the blue he got a call from Aaron Rogers JC coach in CA advising Rogers would be interested in taking an official visit. Olson said he went to Tiller and they agreed PU would keep their word and not recruit anyone else that spring. So they passed on Rogers....

I think Rogers would have reflected the skills, qualities mentioned.
Not true. Orton was class of 2001, Rodgers was class of 2002.

Agree, but Tiller knows what it takes to get that job done. A younger Tiller (PJ Fleck or K. Sumlin) are the two on my short list. I like Spack, but we likely blew out that candle. Who knows if he'd have that energy to put it all together?

Pete Quinn. It all starts up front. Pete was a great player, he bleeds Black and Gold, he has the positive attitude that might be contagious.

Quinn throws it over the middle and nobody is home, except for Stuart Schweigert!

Schwiegert, Kerrigan, Phillips or Koutivides...

Keep orton, Bryant, Keller, Gardner... All were good, but what this team needs now is a mega pass rush, coverage over the middle or both
