I see improvement

I think the team is getting better. I remember sitting at the Wisconsin game in the rain and we got pounded. The season continued and we kept getting pounded.

This year our record does still stink, but look at the scores compared to a few years ago. At least now we are in the games. We have not been able to finish as is our goal, but at least we are competitive now.

I am not excited where we are record wise, but I recognize we are closing the gap.

I personally am excited about Blough and Jones going forward.

Look, I understand that there were positives to take away from Michigan State. But quite frankly, how is that any different than last year when we played MSU close at home?

Is barely losing to Marshall and Western Michigan a sign of improvement? We lost to Western Michigan less than 2 weeks ago - not half a season ago.

You can't pick out one game (and quite frankly, one half) and say "I see improvement"....it's a season wide metric.

What year is it? I don't recall playing Western Michigan in 2015?

Regardless, if it's a "season-wide metric" then the season's still young for this team.

The team is playing hard and Blough has brought improvement to the offense. So it's too early to give up on them and Hazell. This weekend will be huge.

until Purdue does it on the scoreboard, any talk about improving or whatever means absolutely nothing , back it up or be quiet

.... so said, John Wayne, "The Duke."

What a dumb comment, we were discussing improvement and hence the prospects for the rest of the season, and relevant improvement that can be measured by more than just Wins and Losses, no matter how macho it sounds to say otherwise.

Sorry, Bowling Green. You know what I meant.

I agree that you can measure it not simply based on wins and losses. However, that also means you have to gauge things based on other non-black & white factors. But quite frankly, we had 1 good half of football that was preceded by one half of absolutely horrible football vs. MSU as well.

We don't have as daunting of remaining schedule as we thought maybe going into the season (Wisconsin look ok, but not great; Nebraska lost to Illinois).

If you're going to gauge things, you have to take all factors into account. Is beating Minnesota, a team that scored 0 points last week, an automatic sign of improvement? No, it depends on a number of factors. We could play like crap and still win this game if we score 3 points.

It reminds me a lot of the very late Tiller years. We'd blow a lot of teams out. Rack up 6 wins against teams that had losing records and pound our chests. But we couldn't ever beat anyone decent (we had quite a streak of losses against top 25 teams). Because you can beat some crappy teams - and handily - doesn't make you a good team.

So unless you look at things in a variety of ways in all situations (not just wins, not just losses), you aren't going to come away with a very non-biased opinion.

Did I suggest we ignore everything, or anything, you've mentioned here? Winning this Saturday may tell us less than losing badly would? The jury is out.

And yeah, really glad we no longer have to put up with those "late Tiller years," when we just beat the teams that weren't as good as us, like Iowa, Minnie, NW, IU, U of I, MAC teams, etc.

I believe you are incorrect. A team like Purdue needs to win a game against a significant opponent to prove they are indeed "improved" rather than that other teams are playing down to Purdue's level and looking ahead in their schedule to a real challenge. I hope I am wrong but I am afraid Kill at MN will have his team coached up after laying a big egg at NW last week.

Ask me after this game. It will tell me more than the MSU game. EVERY team has close calls, including everyone in the top 10.

Yeah those "Late Tiller Years" were pretty bad when we had quite of string of losses to top 25 teams... Now we just have quite a string of losses, to just about anybody.

I don't know enough about football from a technical level to really judge improvement, but my dumb casual fan impressions are that the team is slightly better than last year, but the opponents have also been slightly better than last year so it's not translated to wins.

Last year I don't believe Purdue tanked after the Michigan State game. I thought they played Minny and Nebraska well on the road, and it wasn't until Anthrop was lost with the ACL that the team tanked. I think it's because he was the most consistent receiver to get open/catch the ball, and with him gone the passing game was really hampered.

Areas of improvement I see are:
Offense seems to be able to pick up 3rd downs more often, and D gets off the field more often on 3rd downs.
Some success with downfield passes.
Blough and Jones have a lot of potential.

Area of not much improvement:
Stupid penalties
Dumb off field stuff
still unable to cover receivers closely
fumbles

Are we still debating whether this team is improving? Yes, they are and most of the games have been close but when it comes down to it the win column is all that matters. Hazell won't be around too long if he keeps losing games closely. He needs to start winning games.

Cubs are winning because they hired a manager who has proved he's a winner...not putting all their eggs in the basket of an unproven coach.

Since this thread already took a Cubs direction.. time to give a s/o (and there are pleeeeeenty of others in same boat) to those of us "born" into both Cubs / Boilermaker families. Yowzahs! Thanks Grandma / Gramps / Dad / Big Sis.. gee dad, i sure didn't ask to be born, ha. Cat's in the Cradle, Silver Spoons and all that.. BTFU / Eamus Catuli!

This team sucks against a not so good MN team.

That opening drive TD was impressive. Certainly an improving team! Hopefully Burke extends CDH before someone else jumps on him!

Glad you're so easily impressed. How many B1G wins do you think we should get this season? How many will we actually get? If Coach Hazell only wins 2 conference games this season, should we keep him? Why? At the current rate of success for this team/coach, how long before we are actually competative/anywhere near .500 in conference play? Will any of us still be alive then?

My oldest daughter is a Psychology and Criminal Justice grad. She is getting her masters as we speak. She wants you to schedule a meeting with her. Her first reaction is " WTF is wrong with you?" You need major help from a professional.

Lay off the bong, ...

... meth, ludes, crack, dust & dark eyes,

... then call us in the morning, if you're still this optimistic.

Does the head coach ever get any of the blame for the team's record? What conference record, in your opinion, would be considered unacceptable at season's end?

You can come out now Mitch/Morgan.

Ollie, ollie oxen free!

"...we are closing the gap." At this rate, it'll be 2035 before we're competative in the division, let alone the conference. That's a hell of a gap!

If we lose to IL., will you still be so optimistic? What about Little Sisters of the Poor? Avon?
