Not too long ago we were not even in the top 4 for any of these highly rated players. Now that we are, we act like children every time we do not land someone. Far too many trolls on here.

Stay the course, if it doesn't work out, get over it. If you are true fan you should see this.

I for one have faith that we will get quality players, and I am even more excited for this season to start.

Agree 100%. While it may be disappointing to miss on these guys, we have a really good team this year and if everyone comes back even better next year. I'm sure Painter will get who he needs. I'm ready for some hoops

Good point. You either try for players like JJJ, or you don't. If you strive, you're sometimes going to fail. But we're getting closer, and as you said, the roster we have this year has the potential to be special.

So we used to suck, and now we suck slightly less, so be happy. That's what I just read and 10 or so people like it. Tells me a lot about how many fans settle for mediocre in general.

Keady got some pretty good talent, and used them to achieve a solid, but not spectacular tenure at Purdue. Painter has gotten probably more talent to this point (or maybe similar, hard to compare eras), and has translated that into less than what Keady did his first 11 years.

Not sure what point you are trying to make, but a lot of fans, myself included, would like to see us get some good recruits, win some big games in March/April, and build something special. Finishing 2nd or 4th or whatever for a recruit should make us happy? Being upset about missing on good recruits and no wins in the NCAA in like 5 years makes us trolls? You are the type who is satisfied with a participation trophy. Some of us would like to see more.

No you read that we are making strides in recruiting, and the pieces will fall into place eventually. But if you want to be unhappy and cry about it on a forum you can do that as well. We can debate what Painter did wrong all day and say he is not a great recruiter, but let's be serious, he travelled around the world for JJJ, he put in time and plenty of effort for Tillman.

What do you want? Get over it, he is not Izzo and he never will be, it's not like we are the only ones losing recruits to Hall of Famers. So what ill repeat is that we are moving up on higher ranked recruits lists yearly, we will get our recruits and no, we will not always get what we want.

But be upset and throw a temper tantrum, that's great fandom when you denounce a coach who has assembled a great team for the upcoming season.

I will gladly live in the moment and let the recruiting unfold as always, while i'm sitting here cool calm and collected, you can be all upset over the past missed recruits, build your hatred for Painter, so when we do not win every game you can post saying that we need a change asap. More hate as a fan the better my friend.

Boiler up my friends!

And on hating the people that liked my post, maybe they are just sick of the shitty attitudes our "fanbase" has on the daily,
Who gives you the right to deem settling for and encouraging mediocrity positive? I will no longer settle as a Purdue fan. I want for my team to be great. I am the positive one. You want my team to finish in the middle. You, sir, are the troll.

Chew on that.

Being a 9th ranked team and not having landed a recruit by October 4th is an issue. Every one can pretend it's not. It f****** is! We can put blinders on and say, "everything will be fine" and "It's all about this season." I am very excited about this season's potential. Really excited. But that's not the discussion. The discussion is building a great program year after year requires consistent recruiting with no gaps. THIS IS A GAP!

So complaining about it doesn't make someone a Chicken Little or a troll. It's just that some fans want this to be a great program and want to say something when they see something happening that impedes that.

We can't settle for mid 150's and 200's and expect to contend for anything other than an NIT bid. Having high ranked recruits doesn't guarantee anything in terms of having a good team. But it sure helps.

There is still time to salvage this shipwreck but as the days pass it's going to require more and more luck.

Problem for you is, you're entirely too clueless to even begin to understand the post by HD. You don't want Purdue to be great, you simply want Painter gone because you hate him. If any other coach were in place and had the same record and what not as Painter, you wouldn't be saying anything about it and that is a fact.

You want Painter gone just because you hate him. You are not even remotely positive and are so bent on your agenda that you can't see reality.

Chew on that troll.

Good Lord the stupidity of some of you is astounding. Painter went after the big fish and made ground and the fact that some of you can only see the negative, while crying that he goes after these big time recruits in the first place, is very telling.

I love it when people say things like settling for a recruit, PAINTER WENT AFTER HIGHER RECRUITS!!! He isn't settling and no one else is. Saying he is settling is just extremely narrow minded and stupid.

First you all whined and cried that he isn't going after high ranked players, now that he is you still whine and cry when we don't get them and have to look at other recruits and cry because he didn't go after the ones he has in the past sooner. MAKE UP YOUR DAMN MIND!

Wanting a great program is stupid? OK?

So should Painter get a "Participation Trophy" for going after high recruits?

Do we get an automatic bid into the tournament for efforts made to "great recruits"?

Shouldn't he be going after great recruits every year?

My mind is made up to that I want to get a decent recruiting class every year and have a great team every year. What about that makes me stupid?

We all want the best recruits, I think is safe to say. The expectations are high here because of the level Painter has raised us to.

I have Kessel on ignore so didn't see what he posted so may be off on what he said.... but to me yes he should be going after the high level recruits but on the flip side if you want those recruits you have to put in the time which also means you lose that time elsewhere. It's a double edged sword really...

Painter just got a McD AA last year in Swanigan, also arguably the best shooter in the country in Ryan Cline. This year he got a stud PG from Texas in CE, our biggest need. Before that, Isaac Haas, a NBA prospect center, VE, another NBA prospect wing, Dakota Mathias, a proven smart player who can do a little bit of everything. PJ Thompson has won a few games for us, Basil Smotherman has won a few games for us and is an energy guy, JT is a raw prospect who has a ton of upside and will probably be a contributor this year.

I understand you want to compete for a FF every year, and so does the rest of EVERY teams fanbase, but it's just not realistic for 99% of the programs. The only programs who compete for a FF every year are Duke, Kansas, UK, and MSU. That's really it. UNC has fallen down a little bit although they are always a very good team, but the rest of the teams build their team, and have a great team every 3-4 teams, and a team that competes the other years. We had our downs a few years ago, but Painter has been a solid coach and we've have a solid upper BT team throughout his tenure minus 3 years. He does need to adjust and move from some of his stubborn ways, but every coach does not named on the 4 squads above.

Desire championships
Want great success
But just understand the realistic expectations of a program, which for us THIS year is probably a S16 run, although we have the ability to make a FF run if things fall our way.

I think we all want the team to be great. Nobody has said they desired "mediocrity", so let's stop throwing that term around. Using it clouds the issue, and accuses other Purdue fans of villainy that they did not commit. It's insulting and not needed. Remember, they are also Purdue fans.

What we disagree on is the path to greatness. One team thinks that we are charting the right course and we need to let the current coaching staff work through their difficulties, because they will get us to the success we all want. The other team thinks we are not on the right path, and want to make changes, in order to get to the success we all want.

Team A or Team B. Pick you side and present your arguments. That's fine. Just stop with the false statements and name calling. --> That applies to many who post here, and not just the post I responded to.

I agree. I just find it irritating that not only have we whiffed on all of "our" top choices now we are losing guys to schools like Colorado and New Mexico. Just seems like an abnormally bad recruiting season that I feel will hurt badly down the road.

I most certainly see your point and I hope the last part of your comment doesn't come true. To me it's a time management issue almost because Painter needs to spend it on the big time recruits but also not forget the others as well.

But until he learns to clone himself it might be difficult to do that, especially when I don't think the recruits nowadays view the schools like ours that aren't "blue bloods" as say the next best option when other even smaller schools are televised just as much anymore and they have instant playing time in a lot of cases.

That is just me though and my view. It's funny I travel a lot working in the IT field that I do and with everyone being connected, things are most certainly different than when at least I was in college. If I had the skill to play a college sport like basketball and was a recruit, I would look at any school that will give me playing time and showcase my skills. It really wouldn't matter where because my ultimate goal is to get to the pros and how I got there doesn't matter as much.

Who knows though because what I think and what a 18 year old kid think is very.. very different.

"he put in time and plenty of effort for Tillman"- Agreed. And I haven't seen one person in any of these threads question CMP's work ethic, just his results.

"What do you want?" A coach who can land good recruits regularly, not having huge dips that will inevitably lead to poor seasons. We've seen this before. We have an 11 year track record. We got one fringe 4 star guy this year that COULD play beyond his ranking (remember when several though Bade was going to be really good his 2nd year... yeah) and will end up with some low 4 star or unranked types in 2017. We are headed for a down cycle and it needs to stop. Also, we need some playmaking guards. Seriously, we haven't had one since Smooge.

"I will gladly live in the moment"- That's what children do. Live for the moment. It's what our society says to do, so I get that you want to do it as well. I enjoy the moment and look toward the future simultaneously, and while I think we can be solid this year, we won't be special without a playmaking guard or 2. Carsen Edwards COULD be one, but who knows. Looking forward, the future does not look good based on who we have coming in. Dozens of Painter supporters pointed to 2017 on this site and about how that would be a huge determining factor of his future. Now dozens are backing off of that and are suddenly ok with "just enjoy the ride, we will get ours, Painter is on the trail of some big fish in 2018!, we only want guys who want to be here, Izzo cheats!, recruiting sites don't really know anyway, etc."

1st point, plenty of people have questions is work ethic and personality, but in all honesty he ran into the MSU buzzsaw.

2nd point, WHO DO YOU WANT? think logically and get back to me. Painter is still relatively young.

3rd point, if I am a child for being excited for this team and the season then I am a ok with that, I am a child who cries far less than all you adults who have nothing better to do than bash Painter and this team.

I am now impatient and want a championship for Purdue. I can't speak for all but I think us AARP Purdue fans are tired of mediocrity and want something better than a B1G championship every now and then. Now the football team has gone in the wrong direction since the Tiller years. It is time for winning teams.

Who do I want? Gregg Marshall, Archie Miller, Chris Mack, Cuonzo Martin. Maybe a good young recruiter who is currently a top assistant like Jeff Capel, Kenny Payne, Kurtis Townsend or Chris Caputo.

So by this logic, we should just keep Hazell as head football coach? Right? "

Yep, you're not a PURDUE fan if you don't love PAINTER according to many on here. Something I've never understood.

I have never had an issue with Painter's personality, and I have met him multiple times. This year he seems to be even more engaging on the twitter front as well, which I view as a step in the right direction.

As for the second point, I asked you to speak logically, and I do not see the majority of those as a major upgrade to Painter.

I feel as it is best to just ignore all the hate and enjoy the game of basketball and the university we all care about (in vilehoopsters case... IU).

Correct. Same type of fans that would've wanted Bo Ryan fired at Wisconsin before he broke through and Jay Wright gone at Villanova before last season.

Wow! Exaggerate much? You are quoting statements nobody has made here, or taking them out of context..

When did anyone rank our football team in the top ten in the country? Why would I want to "stay the course" regarding our football program? Why would you even try to draw a parallel here? I read this stuff and think your brain has a major short circuit.

Look, I don't "love" Painter. I just think he is on the right course for Purdue. If he fails again in the NCAAs and busts on the recruiting classes, then I might consider asking the administration to look for another coach. So far, I am satisfied that he has the capability to take Purdue to the FF.

The problem I have with the anti-Painter crowd (of 3 maybe?) is that none of you are able to make clear arguments why you want him replaced without manipulating the statistical data, or ignoring inconvenient facts.
