I guess "Creaning" now exists

I remember when IU fans used to deny that "Creaning" occurred. The people that left, e.g. Roth or Capo, were looking for more playing time or were just unhappy. To suggest that they were forced out was heretical and shouted down. All kinds of excuses were invented to explain the departures.

Now, the Indy Star recognizes it in print. Over on Peegs, there is open discussion and even a great deal of criticism of the practice.

I wonder if all the posters who claimed that the existence of Creaning was a fantasy are willing to step up and admit that they were wrong. (I do realize that the probability of that is slim to none.)

Ron Patterson was the worst. The way they kept blaming it on the kid was sickening. I'm not denying he may have been boarderline on academics but usually that gets out at some point prior to a week before classes start. No one knew he was questionable until he was creaned. And if he had been higher touted and they had a scholarship available, they would have gotten him in. That's not an Iu slam, I believe that happens every where.

Patterson is transferring from Syracuse. If I were betting, he'll end up with his cousin down at Houston. Ironically, if he goes there, he'll finally get to play for an IU coach, albeit former coach.

I didn't see this posted here, but according to the IUStar, immediately after losing to Wichita State, rather than shaking hands with the opposing coach, crean walked up to one referee on the court and said, "You suck."

How predictable Stanford Robinson is gone. Coiincidence?

One of my Facebook "friends" (minor HS acquaintance) was very matter-of-fact about it.

He said something like, "OK, with Robinson gone that's one of the open slots we need. Where's the other slot going to come from... Top candidates are bench warmers A and B, and ..."

Where's the concept of the player committing to the school and the school committing to the player? Isn't there a contract (otherwise, what is "signing"?)? Is the message forcing a kid (in good academic standing) out something like, "Legally we can't force you to go, but if you don't go you'll never play in another college basketball game."

I don't really understand how Creaning works I guess.

CRBoiler - the legal scholarship contract is 1 page and is good for 1 year. it contains your scholarship $ for that year. it can renewed after each year. for partial scholarship sports, it can be increased or decreased after each year. With that said, reputable D1 major sport coaches ALWAYS renew the scholarship unless there is a severe 'detrimental attitude' issue. With that said, didnt Glass puff out his chest and pat himself on the back for being a leader at IU to have an agreement with all student athletes to guarantee 4 years of scholarship and not let any-no-so-reputable IU coach not renew after one year? Oh yea, that same Glass is full of hot air and is all talk/no action. What a joke. He and Crean deserve one another

Wow, so given the "sit out a year" transfer rule, you can lose a year of playing eligibility just by getting a bad coach who doesn't renew your scholarship because there is a better player lined up? WTF - why would anybody other than a superstar go to a school like that when most other schools will treat you better?

And even though the scholarship is good for a year, when a coach sits down with a family to recruit a kid, he promises the family that their son will receive a valuable 4-year education from a great university. They never give the disclaimer, "...unless we find a player we like more than your son."
