I don’t think Oconnell was taking risks yesterday

Anyone remember Akili Smith? So many NFL combine superheroes who never make it at QB? They just don’t have the brain.. that’s it. That’s where it starts and ends. They can’t get through reads and need to see a guy get open and throw it.

Tom Brady and joe Montana are on read 2 and as they look a guy off and go to read 4, they aren’t even looking and suddenly turn back left and lay a ball out there that a guy runs right into.

Oconnell missed a defender in the end zone yesterday.. he just didn’t see him and threw a pick.

the other three picks all hit receivers hands first right? So.. what the pick to Durham was called was.. making an NFL big dog throw right into the hands of a guy in a tight window and that guy not making a catch.. and im a huge Durham fan.

what I saw yesterday was not Oconnell taking risks. I saw a guy quick through his reads setting up the defense and finding open receivers that a 1-2 read college QB just doesn’t get to.

I will go so far as to say that he may be the best at getting through reads since brees, and that while his legs preclude him from being a drew Brees type of QB there are brief moments where his high end looks brees esque

now we all know that Illinois game plan was for plummer, and so how will it differ for Oconnell.. could be press man look with exotic blitzes trying to bring three total defenders on one side so that they can get to him before routes develop .. and so if he starts to look not as good, that’s opposing coaches earning their paycheck against his feet.

where I think his growth may be scary .. and what to look for.. is when he has two blitzers coming at him and as he goes down he leaks out a pass that sheffield catches on a drag to where the blitzers came from. And it turns into a huge gain.

yeah but I don’t think he’s a risk taker so much as a guy who had a few receivers drop catchable passes and missed one defender in the back of the end zone. He’s just capable of finding guys open later in a play

I like your analysis, and agree on the INTs, our players must make those catches in their hands! I had to DVR the game and watch it much later at night. Simply put, Purdue does not win that game without O'Connell going in late in the game. I said it then and will say it again. Purdue needs both QB's throughout this season. 1 is a game manager and the other is more of a gunslinger that is accurate beyond 10 yards of L.O.S. It is apparent to me that AOC can read progressions quick and can fit it into tight windows. He'll take chances that gives Purdue the chance to win. We'll win and die with a gunslinger this year. IMHO, I'll take it.
With all the injuries prior to the game, then add in Doerue, Durnham and Deen going out, I applaud our coaches finding a way to win. Purdue is playing some positions with 3 teamers.

Hope that some of our players return to health this week and can get back on the field.

Oconnell may do a lot bigger things than anyone can see now, which was often true of David Blough
