Burke officially announced his retirement to come July 1017. Obviously this is great news for the football program which needs a major spark. I was wondering about the basketball program though. It is good right now. Wonder how the new AD will change (if any) the program?

The only question I had was what is wrong with July of 2016?

I think the bigger question will be how a new AD will affect Purdue Athletics as a whole. One thing I've talked about on here which I've found frustrating with Burke is the people he's had around him. An AD can't do everything and they can't be experts on everything.

I fundamentally disagree with how Morgan has set-up his athletic department leadership.

For example, the person in charge of the budget/business operations - is also the person that oversees communication/PR, marketing and the ticket office. That just doesn't make sense (never mind that the JPC/fundraising operate in a separate org chart - even though JPC/ticket office/marketing should all be in one bucket, in my opinion.

And you know what she did before? She came from Morgan's steel company and was an accountant there. And she's in charge of marketing and communications now? That doesn't seem like the greatest idea.

I should say as well - this is nothing against her personally, I don't know her. She may not really get too involved in those areas - but it doesn't seem like the best structure no matter who is in that position. The person overseeing accounting shouldn't be overseeing "creative"/external areas like a communications department.

This is just one example of Purdue needing to become a leader in innovation, creative, branding - we brag about it as a university, yet our athletic department lags. And no, innovation isn't killing traditions like a pre-game marching band cheesiness like was done a couple years ago - it's creating a strong, common bond amongst tradition and innovation. We do things - we just don't do them well.

I want to see our athletic department operate confidently, not as complainers.

So when it comes to affecting something like our basketball program - hopefully our basketball program will benefit from a better brand of an athletic department.

I'd say the basketball program is about where you would expect it to be from a historical perspective at Purdue. The football program on the other hand is at a historical low by any measure.
So, I don't look at it in terms of "yeah, football is really in need of attention, but don't want to rock the boat because basketball is at some perfect storm of all time greatness". I look at it as the football program and the additional revenue it can potentially generate is the tide that will lift all boats. And I think the basketball culture at Purdue and in the state will require that the men's basketball program get the attention it needs.
Also, basketball has the new facilities, so other than working on the basketball coach contract I don't see much that is going to be done in the immediate future regardless of the background of the new AD.
The women's side is where I could see things getting interesting. It is not a significant revenue generator, so how much do you invest to compete with the Joneses, particularly if it means less money for football or non revenue sports.

I agree. I think football is the main area of focus for the new AD. Not much needs to be done with basketball. Are the assistant coaches at a good salary? This may be one area I would increase to help get good staff around Painter.
