are they saying high ankle sprain?

You never want to lose a starter, but I think King and Downing can produce just as well while also adding more of a big play threat. King definitely gets through the hole faster and those holes are going to get smaller as the face tougher Ds.
King is actually DJ Knox with a different jersey (dude runs exactly like Knox).
Maybe this will also get Moore, more involved in the offense as a run wide guy.

Rumor is he is having season ending surgery to repair whatever it is. I think Brohm should have a press conference this morning (usually Monday’s at 11 est) where we should know more.

Yeah not great to lose Horvath. Would this mean he’s done with his career here

The issue is that Horvath ran over guys when our OL couldn't open any holes. I don't see Doerue doing that. I agree he hits a hole faster, if a hole is there to begin with. And that's probably the main reason Horvath is playing as much as he is.

I think Horvath could have at least 1 more year because of the free Covid year. I could have sworn I saw Miller standing on the sidelines in full uniform in the 2nd half.

I like Horvath in short yardage or to get that tough 2-3 yards, I just didn't think he was a great option as your featured back in the backfield, especially with an OL that is weak in run blocking.

Not many running backs will be effective if the OL doesn't block. That was more of the issue with the running game than Horvath being the running back. I'd like to see more speed as well, but if you don't make holes or block the edges, speed doesn't really matter.

The offense starts with the o line. Which ours has been terrible and we could have the best RB in college ball but he'd struggle to be effective with this line.

Plummer better have his head on a swivel saturday because ND is likely to be in the backfield all day long.

Bio indicates did not play in '17 ("redshirt"??)
Played in 18, 19, 20 (2020 did not count against eligibility).

So, he has one, for sure. Depending on getting that additional (medical) year, could have 2.
Oh didn’t realize he was here in 2017…. if he’s already a 5th year senior, hard to see him staying for 2 more.

Horvath is an every down back. He can run, he can pick up tough short yardage, he can pass block, and he can catch passes out of the backfield.

None of the other backs can do that, at least not that they've shown at this point.

That's why losing Horvath is a major loss.
I agree. I’m hoping that the creative side of Brohm comes back out and we see a wideout or two doing somethings out of the backfield. Not just jet sweeps, but maybe some misdirection runs and short pass routes as a running game substitute.

Miller was back on the sideline doing some short zigzags and blocking up against a coach/trainer. I didn't get the impression that he would miss too many games.

This was an issue/matter discussed at great length some time back...there were questions about the position itself with Horvath as the featured back, but, the greater concern expressed by many after the transfers was the incredible lack of depth at the position...it just defies all logic to think that Purdue has a former walk-on as its primary back...an undersized guy that lacks experience as the backup...and a walk-on/transfer from UNLV as the only other back...even more so with consideration for how poor the OL has been/is.

Do SEC schools even wait for waivers anymore ?

Or do they just trot the kid out there, and extend double birds in Indy’s general direction?
hoping for a speedy recovery for Zander. Ole Tyreek Murphy really blew his chance at Purdue w/ his nonsense and Zander's injury. Thought he was going to be a really productive RB here.

Yet, I am pretty sure that you cannot find more than three running backs in the BIG better than Horvath. He passes the eye test and the stats test. Hope he is back in 5 weeks.

thankfully there's a bye week in there. After 5 weeks vs Wisky, after 6 weeks a less physical Husker team.

I am not concerned. I think we have a backup in King who is a starting caliber rb. He isn’t undersized at all at 5’10” 205. His backup will now be Downing who played some as a freshman last year and has looked capable in a small sample size since being at Purdue. Now if we get down to our 4th rb that is when we get to undersized Cross which is why I wouldn’t expect to see him. I would imagine we would experiment with Anthrop or Sheffield in the backfield if it comes to our 4th rb. Pretty sure I read an article that said Cross had already put on like 20 lbs since arriving though so maybe he would be fine as well.

Horvath is a big loss. He's a football player first and a running back second. He isn't the fastest guy on the field but probably is the most determined. Good hands. Makes you pay for trying to tackle him. Good all around player that will be missed. Hopefully those playing behind him can fill the void. They have a lot to prove.

Zander is certainly is a big loss. But, over the past 2 years he has gotten literally all of the snaps. I would contend that we don't even know what we have with the other two backs. Remember Wally Pipp !

Actually we do know what we have. If Zander got all the snaps, there is likely a reason a very good reason for it in that the other backs couldn't beat him out for the starting spot.

I thought Dylan Downing looked pretty good against UCONN (I know it was UCONN). He ran hard, had some ability to cut back, and looked like he could catch the ball out of the backfield (2-19 yards). Did not really notice how good his pass blocking was though.
