Is it just me or are there an inordinate amount of mid-season transfers popping up after just 4.5 weeks of basketball? Three new ones announced just in the past few days.

Is this a sign of the times with the spoiled nature of skilled players who demand playing time early? Or are coaches just becoming so desperate to lure kids to campus that they promise anything and everything, resulting in the player feeling betrayed?

There is a post in another thread that suggests Painter become less forthright when selling to a recruit. Just sayin' ...

Yankuba Sima (St. Johns)
Cameron Justice (Vandy)
Sam Cunliffe (ASU)
Issac Copeland (Georgetown - announced will transfer at end of season)

All in the last four days.

It's a combination of many things, number one being that in today's society everyone gets a trophy. Not everyone deserves a trophy and when it doesn't come or someone yells at the poor baby, they back off and leave instead of sucking it up and working harder. And this all stems from parents and pandering AAU coaches.

How many youth sports did you ever coach?

Well Mr. Heller, let me figure this out. Started in Tee Ball, Coaches Pitch, Little League, Pee wee Football, Babe Ruth, Commissioner of Youth League four times without ever taking any pay, two high schools, American Legion for a total of.....over 45 years. Sent or helped send several kids to play in college, and still have players come by when they need help. How about you?

Quite a few years with soccer, baseball, basketball and none of them were paid either. I just don't get your constant bitching about a kid getting a participation ribbon etc.

.... Auburn's New Williams is transferring. (Just to reiterate the "plethora" point, this is not a "we should try to get him" point).

None of these kids were recruited on the basis of how many participation trophies they won. They built their egos up by dominating their competition. I suspect that many of them transfer because it is easier to blame their coach, teammates, or surrounding for lack of success rather then themselves, but it wouldn't be fair to paint every transfer with that broad brush.
Speaking of broad brushes, the participation trophy meme is a popular bit of conventional wisdom that is very useful for individuals looking to feel superior and dismissive towards younger generations. A persons initial skill at a task isn't necessarily indicative of their ultimate ceiling, so encouraging people to continue to try and improve even if they start off poorly is generally a good thing. This probably has led to more hopeless cases wasting their time chasing impossible dreams o Dunning-Kruger effected individuals. But its not as if plenty of the older generations hasn't been afflicted with those traits and there is proven value in improving confidence and perseverance.

The point is that if participation ribbons or trophies makes a kid leave his/her keyboard, game stick and bag of chips to get some exercise then it's a good thing. Kids are dropping dead with heart ailments and generally crappy health due to lack of doing anything that requires exertion.

Diabetes is also becoming much more of a widespread problem among youths, sadly.....although there are multiple contributing factors.
