Highly ranked Guards?

The ol Brandon Newman treatment from Painter 😂…but yeah hope Furst can regain his confidence or whatever he has lost since his Frosh year. We saw a glimpse of what he can do on the put back dunk vs Arizona, but 6 min of action last night was a bit odd for him. Maybe there’s something more to it?
Zach played 34 minutes and Mason played 22. I don't think there's anything more to it than that, there's only so many minutes to go around and if Mason plays 20+ and Zach plays max minutes it's likely that Caleb is going to be the player impacted.

It was interesting that MP pulled him after two minutes in the first half. Caleb didn't have a great start but Matt was very quick to put Zach back in. It wasn't just Caleb, it was clear that Matt had some scar tissues from getting punched in the mouth at MD last year as Myles only played 3 minutes and Cam and Ethan were slightly under their minute averages.

Painter seems to forget about certain players . Last 2 years Newman and now Furst. Before that Stephens, I won’t say blackballs them but definitely has a negative view. Now with the Waddell included in the rotation just can’t happen , he would start on most mid major teams but not athletic, strong or skilled to play at the level we want. His body isn’t built for the 4 , doesn’t have the athleticism or handles for 3, but is a great teammate and sometimes that enough

I am not convinced that Painter’s leash is shorter than that of his peers. He’s still got a 10 man rotation, after all. I see quite a bit of patience with him, particularly when players are doing what they are supposed to do, but struggling with production.
Agree, I don't think that MP has generally shown a short leash in any way this season prior to last night.

I believe he had another turnover where he just isn't controlling the ball well and then the goaltending and then immediately Zach was back in. I really don't have a problem with that short rest for Edey...I mean if he can play 34 mins and is needed, no reason to have Furst in there just to give him mins with little value. It could just be the short spurts and can't get settled in good, but he isn't contributing much in a positive way, so in a fairly close game, Zach isn't going to sit for 15 mins.

I don't think it's an unfair view of Furst. I thought at times, he had an unfair view of Newman, but not in this case. Zach is going to play a lot of mins in a close game, so not much left there for him. Caleb can't really slide over and get a lot of mins at the 4 because you have TKR and Gillis that are going to get their mins. He's just limited in a close game unless Zach is in foul trouble which hasn't happened this year. Just no room for Waddell to get mins. Likely never go more than 10 deep in conference play, and he's going to be 11-13 range always while at Purdue. No problem tho because you always have either a redshirt or a project type or a glue type guy in that 11-13 and it's fine because like I said...no team goes that deep.

I agree with this in general. I would say that last night MP was probably a little more conservative than he needed to be in reinserting Zach in the first half but I understand why he did so and part of it may have related to Caleb's frustration play with the goal tend (just a dumb play) after getting stripped on the other end.

I would say to the other poster's point of certain players being in MP's doghouse that I've not seen any evidence of that with Caleb. Matt has consistently said that all three of the guys at the four deserve to play more and has been complimentary of Caleb's defense and hustle. The reality is that there just aren't enough minutes.

Did you see something last night to suggest he should have had more than 6 minutes?

I thought that philosophy was about right given his lack of performance last game.

But interestingly, it should be noted, a couple of times this season two different players were spared this philosophy.

In any case, hope Furst has a great game vs. Illinois.

The bottom line is that TKR and Gillis have earned the right to share the 4 and Edey is the best player in the country, which leaves Furst with very limited minutes backing up Edey when he needs a break.
You may be right but I would be surprised if Caleb ends up only playing minutes at the backup 5. My guess is that it's more matchup dependent but I could be wrong.

It isn't just his performance. TKR and Gillis have been playing really, really well.
