Hazell...what a jerk

“I think we’re heading in the right direction, for sure, absolutely, 100 percent certain we are heading in the right direction,” he said. “Obviously, not on the wins and losses but are we getting close? Absolutely"

“From a fan perspective or somebody from the outside that doesn’t see all the things that happen on film, you have to really evaluate what’s really happening and make the right decision from that perspective.”

What film? There was ABSOLUTELY nothing to watch. Zero. Start over with basics. Every job/position should be open.

Give him a break. He's discovered that he's a rider of someone else's coat tails not the wearer of the coat. It's tough to find you've Peter Principled this early in your career. He'll be gone soon.

Why are they even wasting their time interviewing this guy, when he always says the same thing. You pull the string in the back of his neck and out comes, "we need to go back and watch the film to see how we lost by 40 to this mediocre team" or "everyone on the outside just sees us getting drilled every Saturday. They don't see the second coming of the 2001 Miami hurricanes that we see at practice everyday."

A better question actually in my mind is not why they continue to interview the guy, but why absolutely NOBODY will confront him while doing so. Upon hearing that garbage response, why is it that nobody at all had the audacity to follow it up with, "You are kidding, right? You just lost by five touchdowns to a mediocre team at best on Homecoming and were outcoached and outplayed in literally EVERY phase of the game but you are heading in the right direction?".

I just saw where Kyle Charters for the coordinators corner bit said that Hudson was pleased/happy with the defense for the first 50 minutes but no so much the last 10...really? If that is really what he said and felt, how could Kyle not point out that by that point they had given up 500 yards of offense, nearly 300 yards rushing (to a team that came in averaging less than 70 per game) and 41 points and then ask him how he could possibly have been pleased/happy with THAT?

Hazell has nothing but cliches and gimmicks to offer...he is a lousy coach in way over his head with a really lousy set of coordinators that were only available because of how bad they were and only willing to accept the offers at Purdue because they had no others available. Hazell is on record as to wanting to make history at Purdue...at least he met one of his goals during his tenure, as he is hands down the worst Head Coach in the history of Purdue football...more impressive, he managed to accomplish that feat while being its highest paid as well.

Hazell is a joke as a coach, just as Burke is as AD...but the media (including those that cover him/them here) is as big a joke at this point.

I don't think Hazel is a jerk. He's just a really bad coach and is in denial of how bad he his.

I heard during the game Saturday that Schoop comes up with his plays while sitting on the toilet doing his business... that's just too easy to run with.

You are right, this guy just keeps coming up with bs to say to the media. We need some hard nose reporter like Kravitz to respond to him and tell him how it is.

I also like his quote about how tough it is dealing w/ the roller coaster ride of the season. That means to me that there ups and downs, I only see downs. This guy is in so much denial. I can only imagine what the recruits see in this program.

I don't think he's a jerk, but he is arrogant. He thinks we're (fans) blind and can't see how "special" the team is.

He's way out of his league. I hope he gets fired the day after IU smokes us.

What's he supposed to say? Purdue sucks and is sucking harder than ever before? He's certainly not a jerk for trying to be optimistic. I think the OP's a jerk for calling Hazell a jerk in the post title.

A chance to play early at a Big Ten school with good academics.

Exactly what I've been thinking for awhile. I watched the presser and became nauseated when the reporters started practically getting into a love fest with him toward the end. The attitude in that room should be downright uncomfortable if the media are doing their job.

It is ridiculous to listen to him speak, the cliches and false information that he spews, and then for those in attendance to deny reality even more and engage in the laughter/giggling/lovefest that you alluded to. I simply cannot believe that NOBODY has the courage to point out the reality of the situation and question him on his decisions, as well as those of his coordinators. He has failed miserably at his job, but those covering him are failing just as miserably...including those on this site who are as guilty (maybe even more so) of just being a forum for him to share his nonsense.

Like I mentioned before...........half this recruiting class will be made up of JC players just to get 18-20 players to fill the class............equaling once again....a dead last recruiting class!

Atleast he can man up and say" things aren't going as planned"..............".we still have a hell of a lot of work ahead of us".........." we definitely need to make some serious changes in the off season, because our plan isn't working!" Give us something.....................not this line of BS every week!!!!! Makes him look like a fool!

I wonder if ones on that cover this site have the guts to ask him hard nosed questions? Hazell should be sweating by time the press conference is done.

I don't think we need 18 players this year. The senior class is small due to defections and flame outs from Hope.

Before the Nebraska game, hazell was prattling on about how the staff spent the bye week figuring out the 7 or 8 things the team did well. Someone asked "shouldn't you already know that at this point?" Not sure who that was, but that was the first time I had heard that pointed of a question asked of hazell.

I don't know why any of us give a hoot what he's got to say at this point. It makes my blood boil seeing the way our hands tied in this horrible deal.

Seriously, how many football players take advantage of the good academics?

I did. I became competitive academically while on an athletic scholarship.

True story: Offensive tackle Pat Ward choose Northwestern because he felt that the program would be more supportive of his academic interests in engineering. Ward graduated with a 3.96 in mechanical engineering from NU and took a job with Boeing. Boeing, in turn, sent him to graduate school to study aeronautical engineering. Pat is now a grad student at Purdue.

You know I am sure he is a nice guy. But when it comes to coaching, CDH is a moron.

I've done better coaching jobs while playing madden on the xbox.

This always comes to mind when I think of "coach" Hat

Only fools would expect any college coach to publically rip his own program and players, regardless of what’s happening on or off the field.

If players can’t look to their own coach for a positive perspective, a reason to keep working and pushing for better, who can they look to? You?

And local media have to work with the same coaches virtually every day through every season. Hatchet jobs by beat writers would only cut their own throats. Their jobs demand working relationships and balance … at least outside of the products of that Goober Pile Skool of Jurnelusm.

Although “jerk” would apply to the larger number of posters on these free boards of late, that’s never applied to Darrell Hazell. His results here have been horrible, and disgusted fans heading home early has become a sad habit. But all the frustrations of the past three years have hurt no one more than him. He’s at the center of it all. Even so, he’s never failed to maintain his composure. He keeps cool, stays positive and remains a first-class person. For that, he certainly beats most posters.

We’re Boilermakers. Vent the steam, but don't stoop to the loosier level.

Lol! This is the most ill-informed/sorry/frail quote that I may have ever read on these garbage boards! Everyone on this board is now dumber for having read your expression of weakness.

I'm not stealing millions of dollars from a school and its fans and telling them they're stupid.

He's just trying to be upbeat instead of beat up.

And I'm changing my definition of jerk to whoever dressed the Bills and Jets to look like Starbucks Christmas cups.

Born Boiler, are you familiar with Baghdad Bob? Did you appreciate his upbeat and positive outlook?

Can't recall, but it's a great asset to have.

Wish I could stay that way myself. I can get really teed off as a fan. The damn Cardinals had me going nuts their last two months, yelling to get Bob Gibson in there to stick it in some ears. (He would've made 'em think about it, too, even though he just turned 80.) The football Boilers have just been a downer. I wanted to exit before halftime last week, but we knew the alumni band would deliver a great show, so we stuck longer.

College coaches have to be positive, though, especially younger ones without a great track record in place. Tiller could afford to be a bit more candid because of his immediate success (post-Toledo) and he was just so funny, but he was the one who said he always knew the team would be looking for his reactions, so he had to contain his inner thoughts.

The Hope and Hazell eras have brought varying degrees of frustration, but at least the two of them and most of their players have kept it classy. Although I'd love to see some Bob Gibson attitude out on the field.

Except, with all due respect, I don't see fans calling for him to publicly rip players. 99% of the criticism is on DH and his coaching staff.. record, recruiting, lack of adequate preparation, game planning, unsubstantiated claims of improvement. Not the players. Now, maybe what you are saying is that DH deep down feels the problems are 100% due to player execution and feels no regrets or responsibility from a coaching perspective. But therein lies the problem..

I need to re-name the title of my original post after this week. Now it should read:
"Hazell...what a Salesman" After all,he was able to sell the administration on "the teams progress and that the program heading in the right direction". Man, this guy must really be able to spew the BS.
