We have a QB who can't even be the backup, or maybe even has sunk to 4th string, and he gets on at LSU? That actually happened in the real world?

He'll have a shot at a national title now. LOL

He may have wound up at LSU because Cam Cameron is the LSU offensive co ordinator ,and Cam followed Danny Etlings career at Terre Haute South.Etling may do well down there, but its equally likely H e will never see the field,Who knows?

That's not the point. The point is this is a perfectly good opportunity to come out of the woodwork and take backhanded shots at the coaching staff. I really hope we win this Marshall game.

Yeah, if the OP actually knew what he was talking about he'd know that the LSU QB position is actually in more trouble than ours.

Feel free to criticize the staff when he plays and plays well, but odds point to that not happening at this point.

Redshirt year will do that kid some kid. A real QB coach wont hurt either.

Pulling Etling's redshirt is one of the worst decisions in the last few years. Totally ruined a very talented QB by throwing him to the wolves in a horrible situation with nothing to gain. He needed to get in a new situation and yes,at least this redshirt year cannot be pulled on him.

OR he was a head case who was never going to master the mental part of the game. We shall see. If he IS good he WILL get a shot at LSU next year

Considering he regressed when under the full tutelage of shoop, I think it was the coaching

How did he regress? It would be hard to argue he improved....but how did he regress?

All of his issues were between the ears. Even some of the best coaches (which we can all admit Shoop isn't) have problems fixing those with some guys. I don't think Etling's happy feet, half armed throws, poor pocket awareness and inability to hit Wide open WRs had anything to do with coaching. You actually think they aren't trying to correct those things in practice?

I dont think the issues were as glaring while he was a freshman. The issues were there all along, but whatever methods he used to try to correct them didnt help and statwise, he regressed.

I could say the eye test tells me he regressed as i remember him playing better as a freshman than as a sophomore, but that isnt provable.

Kid was talented, his offer list proves that, i just dont think he was a good fit in Shoops offense.

Doesn't help either when your offensive line gives you no time to pass or receivers that can get open. The deck was stacked against him from the beginning The hits that kid took at times, was a wonder he was able to walk off the field. His confidence was rattled. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he does extremely well at LSU. Wish him all the best.

Nat, Don't you think that sometimes the thing is just not a "good fit" all around. A talented player and a coach just might not connect and mesh together? I have no inside knowledge here, but sometimes a player just can't get his best game from a particular coach relationship, and turn it around a coach can't get a player to get things done as they wish. Both could be capable and its just not the best fit. And after getting beat up so badly DE in this case just needed that fresh start. Both sides could benefit from the separation.

Fit was certainly part of it, but what is Shoop's track record as a QB coach?

And a good recruit can never be ruined by bad coaching.

We can argue in circles all day

Problem is, I'm still very much dealing in hypotheticals and you're dealing with definites.....when nothing can be decided or definitive til next year when Etling CAN actually play AND we've had a season under our belt with an upperclassman QB. Nothing is set in stone at this point about the future of our QB situation and Etling. Stop acting like it.

Also, Shoops QB coaching history IS better than Gary Nord's...that's for sure.

Who brought up nord?

So for those that want a full time quarterback coach, how would you re-structure the coaching staff...and which coaching position would go or be combined?

I would have hired a qb coach instead of Malone and had shoop handle tes

I suspect Malone is here as insurance in case hazell has to give shoop the heave ho at the end of the season

Bad coaching doesn't equate to missing your targets by 5-10 yards. Etling got rocked as a freshman and it messed with him between the ears. Should not have pulled his redshirt, but not being able to hit wide open receivers isn't on the coaches. IF he was even average against Iowa last year that's a win.

something happened between the end of his freshman year and the beginning of the next. He was a head case and i think some of it was getting rocked and some of it was overthinking everything. He was petrified of making a mistake and getting yanked.

Was he though? He made 4 1/2 games of them constantly before getting the yank. We'll know more in 7 days if Shoop is a grand QB killer like everybody wants to anoint him on this board.

Is he a good qb coach? Yes or no?

How about getting an OC who is also a good QB coach? Shoop coached TEs for 1 year with the Oakland Raiders.

Personally, I think the Malone hire was a very good one for Hazell. Malone has a great track record as a coach and a history of coaching on winning, productive teams. He certainly has a better track record as a TE coach than Shoop.
