Talked to Hammons earlier in the week about potentially reaching 1,000 points tonight. He said he didn't even know he was close until his brother mentioned it last week.
"Nah, not at all," he said when I asked if it was a goal of his coming in. "I just wanted to come here and do what I needed to do to make sure I got to the level I needed to. Just make sure I got ready for the next level."
Hammons, honest as always, said he wasn't even sure if it was an accomplishment. He thought Terone Johnson had scored 2,000. I told him it was more like 1,300, and his response was, "I guess that's an achievement in three years."
I put it into some context for him, telling him he'd be the 48th player in Purdue history to do it, and his eyes widened.
