I can totally agree with what u said and what I can tell u he is in the gym everyday working and trying to improve on all aspects of his game to get better and shooting is the one he feels he needs to improve on the most but right now for him to help this team this season they got plenty of great shooters he’s a great passer and u put both together that can cause a lot of problems for teams trying to defend him who is really good at getting to the basket and if they knocking down shots the lane to the basket will b his to take. As of now I’m just happy he has gained some confidence in just shooting the ball now and the more confident he gets the better it is for him and the team and u put that all together man it could be a really fun season.I will try to address as much as I can. played...coached...not a declared shooting coach as a title, but probably more capable than many HS coaches today. You mention confidence and yes THAT is huge. I have a brother-in-law that was drafted by the Celtics...and he was not a shooter (he couldn't teach it either) and a player I coached that led the state in scoring at 30.8 pts/game BEFORE the three point shot...and I can tell you his shot was not perfect and needed constant attention. That mental approach of confidence lies in a different category than proper technique. As has been said more times than needed for comprehension...a person can have poor technique and be effective...NOBODY is debating that. What has been discussed is the potential improvement in effectiveness in doing the right things...and YES...nobody is perfect or has a perfect shot. What you will also notice if you read my posts is that my initial comments were that it was hard to know about Matt's shot without seeing the angle he was shooting. 70 boiler said it appeared he had his palm on the ball rather than his shooting pads...which I think all would say is NOT good...IF the picture is accurate and not misleading. I commented that having the guide hand on top of the ball is not the best approach...but NONE of that says that being improper is indicative of not being efficient as a shooter.
AS you have been told in other threads where you took exception was that nobody is perfect and as good as a player is...there is always room to improve an Achilles Heel. I think everyone sees a very high ceiling for Nojel and feel comfortable that he will be a VERY good player for Purdue and hope he makes a living in the NBA for a long time. None of that suggests a player is not good, because every single player on Purdue is a really good player...even the ones that never hit the court. Glenn Robinson was a great player...one of the best ever for Purdue, but many would say his defense could improve. That doesn't mean he never worked on it or was bad...just a potential area for improvement
Yep. That's oneShaq is the most dominant player I've never seen. He couldn't hit free throws like Isaac either.
How many championships did Kobe and Wade win without Shaq? He couldn't hit free throws like Isaac either.
I fully understand that..fully. Building the team is in the center for now...and with work ethic...he will get there...and THEN there is no ceiling. I really like this team and will be behind the team tonight...farther up than I want ...I can totally agree with what u said and what I can tell u he is in the gym everyday working and trying to improve on all aspects of his game to get better and shooting is the one he feels he needs to improve on the most but right now for him to help this team this season they got plenty of great shooters he’s a great passer and u put both together that can cause a lot of problems for teams trying to defend him who is really good at getting to the basket and if they knocking down shots the lane to the basket will b his to take. As of now I’m just happy he has gained some confidence in just shooting the ball now and the more confident he gets the better it is for him and the team and u put that all together man it could be a really fun season.
I understood that when you said it, but many didn't. I do think alignment in the chest area is an easy fix, but as you said and I have as well...off season is where strides take placeForm change is typically a long slow process which is probably best done offseason and certainly not always successful. (Minor tweaking is a little different). It's only part of a package and attempts at change can be counterproductive.
FWIW, my OP was actually intended more as a comment or observation, rather than a call to renovate Haarms', or anyone's, shooting style during the season.
We have talked in the past about the mental side of sports in general. As far as shooting goes, I have witnessed a very strange (at least I find it strange) habit my son has/had when he played basketball. others have witnessed it also. During pregame warm ups my son rarely makes a shot. I have seen him miss all of his warm up shots before games. He would occasionally have poor shooting games but not often. In most games that he has played, it is much easier to count the missed shots than the makes. high volume shooter that also makes a very high percentage of his shots in games.no disagreement in the value of confidence in all of sports...and huge in shooting. That player should shoot well in practice, but maybe not in the game. FWIW...it is RARE to see people work on their own with concentration and speed when by themselves and so as others have also said...muscle memory is crucial as well. This whole thread is not about who is a great shooter and who is not and the MANY variables that can go into making a shooter better with proper techniques than improper technique. NONE of this suggests that all shooter will proper technique will be great shooters or that improper technique shooters will be poor shooters. There are always exceptions to anything we find...but exceptions should be treated as exceptions. Proper technique is very important. Proper practice of proper technique for muscle memory is very important...and CONFIDENCE that it will go in is crucial as well...
I had a chance to watch the 4A supersectional game versus Whitney Young on cable several months ago, and was wondering what was going on with his free throw shooting at the time. At one point he even switched shooting hands, pretty sure the announcers said he'd done the same in his previous game. But the way he kept getting to the basket and scoring was impressive.U hit it on the nail. My son lost all confidence his senior year in HS. He would not shoot.
Sounds like his warmups are just that...warmups...We have talked in the past about the mental side of sports in general. yeah...and then he stroked the next one and I think it was Haas that left too soon and voided the shot...Without reading word by word all the posts talking about technics of Harms and Eastern, I did notice at the charity game, that Eastern does have a 'hitch' in his free throw shot. He struggled in this game at the line. I believe he missed his first four. SIAD
I've always felt that a player working on his weaknesses was the great equalizer.Weight training ...the great equalizer for those not naturally gifted...
At this point what difference does it make how my son shoot his shot hitch or not he will help this team bcuz he isn’t defined on how he shoots the ball he gives them size length strength passing defending among many other things he can do on the court at a high level that will help this team win games and that to me should b all that matter at this point and the Same goes for Haarms as long as both can contribute to the team success than how both of their shooting mechanics look shooting a FT or shooting a shot. Plz let it go Nojel has a lot to his game than his shot. Lonzo Ball was drafted by the lakers not for his shooting but his ability to pass and make those around them better well my son can do the same thing he will help make this team better by doing what he does well and so will Haarms in the end it’s about wins and losses and the goal my son has set is to help this senior group go out with a bang be big ten champs again and winning a national championship that is what he is here to do and I’m sure Haarms wants the same thing and they both gonna do whatever it takes to help this team win. Let’s concen on that than how someone shoot a ball or FTWithout reading word by word all the posts talking about technics of Harms and Eastern, I did notice at the charity game, that Eastern does have a 'hitch' in his free throw shot. In that game and through out the state playoffs he ahot his FT with his right hand bcuz he had completely lost confidence in his shot period so he played to his strengths he was physically bigger than everybody in the court and he new it and he dominated that game almost by himself for 3 quarters until he ran out of gas. Ended game with 31 10 rebound 6 steals 4 ugly dunks 3 assists. But after season ended he got back in the gym and the weight room to get ready for college. He worked on his shooting up until the day he left for purdue in June. He works on it everyday and today he feels comfortable and confident to shoot the ball now and honestly I’m happy with that. In time his shot will get better and in the off season he will work more on his shot to perfect it and tweaking some of his mechanics he’ll work on that too but in the mean time b Happy he is now shooting it rather than not shooting it.I had a chance to watch the 4A supersectional game versus Whitney Young on cable several months ago, and was wondering what was going on with his free throw shooting at the time. I'll be at the game tonight. Your son is the player I'm most interested in watching.
I no that too trust me he and I have heard the good bad to the ugly remarks about a lot of things he has done on the court and I’m totally well aware how ugly some of these fans will b when he my son F up miss a lay up or do something that may cause purdue to loose agame I’m so well aware how rude cruel mean fans will b of my son when things don’t go the way they feel it suppose to go but right now his shot is what it is nothing no one on this board can do to help him fix it just b glad he’s shooting it hitch and all that is what I will b more concerned with than how he shots his shot. He will help purdue win games that I believe he will do bcuz he can really really play.I don't think anyone is down at all on Nojel. Most think he will be a great player and hope he stays all four years. That said, this board is going to fill up with some people saying nasty things about him and the rest of the team as the year goes by. It can be hard reading here after a loss, between the folks boozed up posting stupid things to fans from other teams stopping by to be pricks. I wouldn't read too much in to the comments... the players get their advice from the coaches, not the people posting here.
I think he had a run of about 11 straight points in the 3rd quarter of that game.In that game and through out the state playoffs he ahot his FT with his right hand bcuz he had completely lost confidence in his shot period so he played to his strengths he was physically bigger than everybody in the court and he new it and he dominated that game almost by himself for 3 quarters until he ran out of gas. U right he ended his HS season with one of his best performances that I had seen out of him during his 4 years in HS. He now ready for the big boy league and I believe he gonna do big things for this team.I think he had a run of about 11 straight points in the 3rd quarter of that game.
U no what’s really funny that many don’t no many think my son is left handed when he really is right handed bcuz he eats and write with his right hand but he can use both his hands equally the same but he does shoot his shots with his left hand. Sometimes that gets confused bcuz he uses both his hands well in games why many would think he left handed. Just started working with both hands at 4 years old and he struck with itI think he had a run of about 11 straight points in the 3rd quarter of that game.
U right and I’m not gonna fall for it cuz I no it’s gonna happen. I’m not getting mad at what they are saying I get it his shot looks a little off I no that so does the coaches of other schools and the purdue coaches no his shot isn’t perfect but let’s take a look at the other things he can do too and that is a lot and to me let’s hope like I do too that he takes open shots when he is open. What I saw at the IS game he was shooting it with confidence and let me tell u I was happy to see that swagger and confidence back and that is what I was most excited about. He has an all around game at 6”7 and he will b helpful at 4 positions if needed. Ready for the season bcuz I just love watching my son play. Please, don’t take it personally when it happens. When the real games start and especially when Purdue loses a big game, the negative posters will show up in droves thinking that the sky is falling. It happens every year, both on this message board and on message boards of other schools.
Any idiot can register and start posting on this board, including fans of other schools pretending to be Boiler fans and I am afraid that there will be fake fans trying to provoke you because they have read your posts.
I've always felt that a player working on his weaknesses was the great equalizer.
I lifted weights competitively in my 20s so I understand the value of weight training. A very good lift for competitive athletes is the power clean. There's a point at which you have enough strength and more may not be of much good - it varies from sport to sport.perhaps...but that has never been in my thoughts. I always considered it working on your Achilles Heel skillfully. I'm a believer in weight training and I see it helping make less athletic people more athletic or more equalizing the inherent physical attributes. I don't know that anyone is born reading the D, playing D, passing the ball or shooting the ball and I see working on those areas...particularly your weakest ares as very important, but maybe not an equalizer. A person getting stronger is more equal to a naturally stronger player in all physical attributes that may show up in tricep strength in shooting, or holding a player flashing without making it so obvious. I always viewed strength training as a method to make more equal those naturally physically gifted with those that are not gifted and need somehow to become more equal. Nobody is born with a ball and so all of that is learned. I don't want to get into another silly game of words. I chose to use equalizer, not in the absolute context of being equal, but in a "thing" that can be done to make the playing field more equal. Once on that field, all the skills can be developed into specific areas...but strength training helps so many.
It is like going into a gym to lift, there are a LOT of lifts a person could do...some more athletic than others...but many would say that if time is scarce that dead lift and squats help more areas than the special lifts. I chose weight training as an equalizer...whether in football, wrestling, basketball, baseball, track...and you get the picture...others may not choose that.
Didn't mean to get anyone riled up, just made an observation. Could care less how someone shoots a ball if it works. Just wondered if anyone else noticed it. was it strength or body building? Like all the other differences in people...building strength will vary between people as well. Had a son in high school that weighed 165 6'0"...dead lifted 405 adn cleaned 335...most people that size couldn't do that. I choose to consider it an equalizer to help compensate for what was not inborn. I'm soft today and so I don't even want to talk about me not being in the gym for almost 5 years...I would embarrass myself...I lifted weights competitively in my 20s so I understand the value of weight training. Olympic style (quick lifting). The snatch and the clean and jerk. That's a very odd combination for your son with a 335 clean and 405 deadlift.was it strength or body building? i have a question for you are you a basketball coach, did you play basketball in HS if u answer yes to both questions u must also be a shooting coach bcuz u have an opinion on Matt harms shot as well as my son and it’s ok u have ur opinion but at this point in there lives as season approaches u suggest right now to change his form to shoot it correctly bcuz it looks awkward how he holds the ball to shoot it. Just so u no yes the coaches work on fundamentals skills and shooting with those who needs them. I have spoken to several shooting coaches and let me tell u what most of them told me just about my son on shot is keep shooting the ball get many reps up as often as he can. They didn’t suggest right now to try to change his shot but suggested for my son to get shots up everyday bcuz from what they told me no shot is perfect as long as u have confidence in it keep shooting it right or wrong way bcuz last I checked it’s many many players in the NBA that don’t shoot much Rondo, Ben Simmons, can’t shoot or shoot awkwardly and they making millions of dollars doing what they do. I no what my son problem is he lost confidence in his shot bcu to him it didn’t feel right and he was a very good shooter during his first 2 years of HS than something went wrong we’re he just lost all confidence in his shot. What I no is this at this point right now for my son no matter how he is shooting his ahot or how he is releasing it I’m glad he is shooting the ball now bcuz his confidence is coming back and shooting is a lot about confidence and as long as he has that I’m happy with that and in due time he will b consistent shooting his shot. Bottom line Matt harms shot works for him and at 20 years old u cannot simply suggest that they should change it bcuz how he shots it as long as it’s going in consistently he will b fine. Helping the team win probably is more on his mind than how he shoots the ball.
Your observations of his shot is on point and something he’s still working to fix and get better at. No hard feelings at all on my end. I was only saying that to say his shooting will come but he also has so much more to his game than his shooting. I’m just excited that season is here and I get to finally see my baby in action. See u n Mackey ArenaDidn't mean to get anyone riled up, just made an observation. Could care less how someone shoots a ball if it works. Just wondered if anyone else noticed it. Sorry if you thought anything else.
It was some school competition of three lift totals. Most the other guys looked like offensive linemen or heavy weight wrestlers. He was just wiry strongOlympic style (quick lifting). The snatch and the clean and jerk. That's a very odd combination for your son with a 335 clean and 405 deadlift.
By odd combination I meant the numeric weights you gave for each lift. If someone could clean 335, I'd expect that his dead lift would be substantially more than 405.It was some school competition of three lift totals. Helping the team win probably is more on his mind than how he shoots the ball. That is the first thing I noticed about Haarms is that Kendall was on top of the ball as well. If you know of a shooting instructor that teaches that, tell me who it is since I have never encountered that approach. My biggest area I thought Kendall could improve upon while at Purdue was his footwork. Kendall would over stride and shoot somewhat sideways. Almost all people want the shooter square to the basket prior to shooting, but there was a guy in the ABA (I know Al Rhodes from Warsaw years ago had him at a clinic...back when he had Grose?) that was concerned only with landing square with the idea of squaring while in the shot. I can't mentally accept that as a good approach either.
What I don't know and my money says you don't know is how much work the staff puts into form. That is the reason why Ernie was there and a couple of years ago we read about Basil, Dakota and other working with a shooting coach. Coaches are limited in how much work they can do off season and during the season there are soooooooo many team things to do. My understanding is that it is the individual (like Biggie) that must put in the extra time outside of practice for individual skills.
What is confusing for me is that it appears you think fundamentals in shooting are not important? I disagree with that. What I have stated, and given examples of were players that were very effective, but had poor form. Are you suggesting that the guide hand be placed on top of the ball rather than the side and whichever is taught has similar effectiveness?
I would be extremely supprised if that number was correct though having amazing form could help or having super short arms (because it makes dead lift harder) if he nocked a 100lbs off that clean it would be a pretty typical number.By odd combination I meant the numeric weights you gave for each lift. If someone could clean 335, I'd expect that his dead lift would be substantially more than 405.
Well as you know the clean is a more "athletic" move. His bench was at the time...maybe 225? This was as a junior or senior. Wiht his weight...more than 405 lbs would roll him over if it were not for his large feet for support?By odd combination I meant the numeric weights you gave for each lift. If someone could clean 335, I'd expect that his dead lift would be substantially more than 405.
It was a few years ago...I know the 405 was correct and thought it was 335, but if 225 is much more typical...maybe in my old age that was incorrect. He won the competition and the competition was huge compared to him. I really don't want to make this about what he could do, but more about what weight training can do for sports. I just know he won and his bench was not as impressive as the other two and his clean was according to his coach very good...but maybe it was less than 335? It doesn't matter to me...he is wiry strong and both of us don't do as well in "pushing" as pulling or in our legs. If 225 is the number expected for those other weights...maybe that was it?I would be extremely supprised if that number was correct though having amazing form could help or having super short arms (because it makes dead lift harder) if he nocked a 100lbs off that clean it would be a pretty typical number.
The power lifting combination was the bench press, squat and dead lift. Your son more likely did a 225 bench, 335 squat (not clean) and 405 dead lift. Those make sense. I didn't like the dead lift either but it was necessary to have enough back strength to allow you to utilize your legs to best advantage when doing a clean.Well as you know the clean is a more "athletic" move. His bench was at the time...maybe 225? This was as a junior or senior. Wiht his weight...more than 405 lbs would roll him over if it were not for his large feet for support?I have no idea what he could do today. I know leg exercises rarely bothered me...but that dead lift....killer and I never ever tried to max and yet not breathing (couldn't help it.
) was a trip. In my 50s I wouldn't even try any athletic move. Yeah, I don't know what he specifically did, but I think the competition at the time was the total of dead, bench and clean. There was no weight group and so he was small enough the others could eat, but he won not doing as well on the bench, but slightly winning the dead if I recall and doing really well on the clean.
Still, in the context of how this got started...I think weight training is great and helps soooooooooo many in sooooooo many sports. FWIW, did have a niece whose husband was in appearance competition. His approach was just rep until the burn and then his diet was something else. Me, I never got into it with depth of understanding...

I'm sure you're aware that the factors for maximum sports performance vary for different sports. I'm not discounting the value of weight training, but its relative importance varies by sport.
Obviously in power lifting the stronger you are the better you'll do. It was a little different in Olympic style lifting (snatch and clean & jerk). There you needed explosiveness along with the strength. In both lifts you accelerate the bar off the floor. The Russians had a set of criteria to select prospects to train for high level competition. Obviously natural strength was a factor, but they also considered vertical jump and 40 yard dash time. If a prospect met the strength criteria but not all of the other factors, he was not selected.
I'll stand with what I said earlier, the key is to work on your weaknesses. That includes physical strength in most cases. Increased strength will certainly benefit Haarms, Wheeler and Sasha. Not so much for Eastern, who already appears to have a fair amount of strength.
Squats needed to be do in a controlled manner to do them properly and safely. Did your son ever try to see what his max squat was?No, there was no squat. THAT I know for sure. It was the three lifts. Why those...I have no idea. I know when I was in my late 30s early forties I figured I would play well into my 50s, but even though I played a lot of ball in many leagues and places I soon found myself being really tender in the knees. Coming down stairs was always a question of how much compression I would feel. I basically would apply lots of heating rubs to my knees and maybe wear sweats to play a bit and yet the next morning it was the same thing. Then I started squating. Now I never got to sitting on a chair or quite that parallel for fear of my knees, but would go down a decent bit. I started doing this three times a week and all of a sudden my knee pain went away and it allowed me a few more years of playing into my mid 40s with the youngsters. I found it the miracle cure.I never maxed or tried to rarely going over 360 and generally doing around 300. I was leery of the squat for my knees and back. Now the leg press...that held no fear for me and so I would do toe raises as well as leg presses.
Yes, every sport has a different emphasis. I know a guy that used to work with Purdue back in the early 90s. The guy that set up the competition or coach involved with it had close ties to the Purdue wrestling coach and maybe that sport influenced him. Where I become somewhat of a believer was when a guy was guarding me and his forearm strength was really good. He was thin and really strong for his size...benched over 300+ and he could restrict my cuts with his brute strength without looking like he was putting a lot into it and I thought...WOW he jams cuts and looks like he isn't touching me with any force. Anyway, strength training is very important and has different needs for different sports. Did the husband of a niece that did high reps and only went for the burn sound like someone working on competition for appearance rather than strength?
Not that I'm aware. I really don't know what he did back then other than he represented a school and the competition were really large guys. He is so busy working right now...I'm not sure if he even has time to lift. Sorry, I just know the coach, some of his friends that lifted. He was always frustrated that he couldn't just get his chest larger. My bloodline has great calf development and so that was never an issue for him. Arms were never an issue for him, but he wanted a lean, but bigger chest I know. What "I" wish he would do is QUIT the damn smoking he picked up after high school even though he says he tries to quit a bit now...but that little smoke thing is whipping his butt! THAT is what I wish he would do....Squats needed to be do in a controlled manner to do them properly and safely. Did your son ever try to see what his max squat was?
