Guess the score (Marshall)

Here's your opportunity to prove that you are a football genius, predict the score of the Marshall game. Bonus points if you explain your reasoning.

I think we will win 38-31.
I think DJ Knox will have a hell of a day, and back up all the talk Hazell has done. And in the end, our linebackers and D-line end up being too much for the running game to completely carry Marshall. Then inexperience does them in as Birdsong throws a late pick to seal the good guy's win.

Interesting prediction. I think it will be a close game and lower score due to the influx of new players (Marshall). We will have to see if there is any home field advantage. The Joan (stadium) playing surface is lower than the seating hence the noise often plays to our advantage and we expect a loud, boistrous, crowd. Should be a great atmosphere and a good game.

I agree, and honestly this is my overly optimistic prediction. I don't know that much about Marshall, but I have heard a lot of good from the Purdue camp (Which happened to a degree last year too...) All in all I hope it's a good game is all, a blow out would mean very bad things for Purdue's season

First games of the season are always interesting to predict. Especially when you have a school from a major conference (Purdue) on the road at a school from a smaller conference. This is not a dig at Marshall. Marshall has had a rich football tradition and has spotted first string teams that can go toe-to-toe with most teams in the Big Ten.

Marshall is a young team and has question marks. Purdue also has question marks. Playing on the road for the first game can be intimidating.....but it also can make the team focus and not rest on their home court advantage laurels.

Although I am a Boiler, I will call the game for Marshall. I think that Purdue has too many question marks for me to predict a victory on the road against someone like Marshall. The question I have is how close will that game be? Remember the Cincinnati game a couple of years ago? That game was over before the middle of the first quarter.

Of course, if I am wrong, I will not hesitate in coming onto this board after the game and eat crow. ;)

They botch some kicks and it's the difference. 33-29 Boilers win. They have the ball in the closing seconds after a Purdue punt but they fumble the snap on the first play and we fall on it. I win my bet with my friend from W. Virginia and he has to drink 3 Purple Vikings within 5 minutes at the bar...yuck. Sugar overload.

Appleby goes 18-30 for 265 yards and 2 TD's
Knox and Jones combine for 175 yards and 2 TD's
Wiggs knocks a FG through
Defense holds on with good adjustments in the second half

Purdue 31 Marshall 23

Not sure about the score, but it we don't beat Marshall, it's gonna be another long year and Hazell's seat is going to be really, really, hot.

A Big 10 team SHOULD have the talent edge over a team like Marshall. We should be a little bigger, a little stronger, a little faster all over the field. If we're, then that's on the coaches and their recruiting.
With a veteran Oline, we should be pounding the ball on the ground and letting AA make simple, high % throws. Let the ground pounding set up some play action and maybe pop one over the top.

I have zero confidence Purdue can win this game. I am going to say 31-20 Marshall. God I hope I am wrong, I do not want to start on the path of another season like the last two.

My guess is as good as yours. We all know Marshall was good last year but lost some players this season. I still think overall they are probably better than Purdue though. I hope Purdue wins but until they show me something I can not pick them.

Purdue 45-24

Purdue was better last year when healthy than the record indicated. More continuity this year in Hazell's 3rd year, improved receiving core with a more experienced Appleby, better line play with more size on both sides of the ball will lead to a big win on the road.
Our experienced offensive line will control this game and the clock and allow Appleby to make plays. Their new QB will force some throws and turnovers will really hurt them.

Marshall 45 Purdue 20

I think it will be similar to the Cincinnati game. Haven't seen anything to make me think this year will be different. Same preseason hype on this board just like every other year.

I will be very disappointed if Purdue loses this game by 25 points.Nobody beat them last year by 25.

Purdue 31 Marshall 21. Purdue gets it rolling late as our offensive line wears them down in the second half. Defense gets 2 turnovers. 17 Purdue points in the 4th quarter.

Yeah, I doubt this is a blowout if we lose. We played much better teams last year without getting blown out. Hard to believe that if we regressed, it would be that much.

35-27 Marshall

1. This is Marshall's biggest game of the year, excluding post season and a home game for Marshall
2. Our D line is weak
3. Our offense does not even remotely compare to theirs
4. They are better coached
5. I hope I am wrong
