Anyone know what's going on? I mean, he is a senior and was once the #5 kicking recruit in the nation. We are at the point where we are going for it in some typically high percentage field goal situations. Is it physical or mental? Sorry if I missed something, but I haven't seen this discussed here or elsewhere.

At this point it has to be mental.

Lack of anyone on staff with experience coaching kickers probably hurts

Seems to be the trend to most players under the HAZZ tutelage.............................

We're interviewing Paul after practice tonight.

Wow, this coach can stare down the crowd and not tell the truth. Three times he was asked about his kicker options and every time the same answer. The players say there is another option. Reporters on the spring and fall kick scrimmages know there is another option. This coach is so arrogant that he does not want anyone to know he has made a poor choice.

I hope he gets it figured out and enjoys success again. But at some point you wonder why there are like 5 kickers on the roster if we're going to go for it on 4th and long from inside the 30.

Tiller reacted very different to this kind of situation. I'll take his record over this crew.

I had no idea Griggs was so highly regarded. It appears that we can put him in the same barrel with Etling and Appleby as players whose performance deteriorated under this coaching staff.

I’m not defending the current situation because something is obviously not working, but this hasn’t been just a Hazell/Griggs problem at PU. PU has had a recurring issue with kicker consistency. Since 1998, Dorsch & Wiggs are the only kickers to have multiple seasons making more than 60% of their kicks. The others all have had more seasons below 60% than above it. Just for reference, making 60% of FGs is nothing to write home about as 60% ranks #104 of 111 of qualifying kickers this season (per ESPN).

-Dorsch’s FG%’s: 72.7, 58.1, 70.6, 81.5
-Wiggs’ FG%’s: 72.7%, 66.7, 78.9, 76

The others:
-Lacevic’s connected on only 52.6% of FGs in his only season.
-Ben Jones hit 83.3% in 2003. The follow 2 years, his FG%’s were 55.6% and 57.1%.
-Chris summers hit 81.8% in 2007. The season before he hit only 40% and the season after only 50%
-Griggs was able to convert 80% of FGs as a Jr. In his other seasons, he’s hit 57.1%, 50%, and is currently at 33.3%.

None of those kickers in the “others” group showed any sort of trend of improvement & none had his best season as his last season. I have no idea if that is normal (kickers are notoriously fickle?), but it seems really bizarre to me.

I think the performance issues that of the 3 guys I mentioned have in common is loss of confidence. And it goes back to the way this coaching staff approaches these games -- playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

That sums up DH and the past 3 seasons!

I don't think there is anything "bizarre" about a kicker not making kicks because he is worried the O-line will not give him time to make a kick.
