and the the veteran team didn't score in the last two and half minutes. I felt like we lost this game at the start of the second half however. You could clearly see the defensive changes got them back in the game.

Not entirely true...as they got beat by the Iowa veteran, as for the second time now in the past two weeks, Purdue got beat by the one guy on the opposing team that could beat them, as they had NO answer for him, just as they had NO answer for Mason...once again, Purdue showed itself incapable of defending the high ball screen, and showed it repeatedly.

Like you, I feel that the game was really lost in the first five minutes of the second half when Purdue gave away a nice 9-point lead.

Iowa made plays down the stretch and Purdue did not...Iowa rode its best player to victory, and Purdue went away from their best player for the better part of the second half...Iowa got stops when it mattered, and yet again, Purdue did not unfortunately.

Thankfully, Purdue countered with their own offensive and defensive changes...oh wait...nevermind.

He's one of the top players and scorers in the nation. We are not the the only ones that can't contain him. It was more improbable that we let the frosh kick our ass.

So, any coach worth their salt has to give us a heavy dose of this the rest of the way, right? Haas, and Biggie to almost as large a degree are a nightmare for us when put in that position. Marry it to foot slow guards, and really its the play you run every time down if you have anyone who can create a shot.

I am wondering why Koennig (sp) wasn't able to do it, but I don't remember many high ball screens from WI either.

Purdue could have double-teamed when he came off of screens, go to double him/trap him when he gets the ball or just show different looks altogether (1-3-1 zone, 1-3-1 trap). We basically saw none of that when some of those changes could have helped or stifled him. A lot of it is on the coaches for their lack of defensive flexibility and unwillingness to implement these strategies for stretches in games (ANY GAMES).

In fact, Purdue has been the only team to contain him at all this year (in the first game). Mathias did a great job on him that night and Jok was forcing things in a way I had never seen before. He went off tonight, but he does that pretty much every game. It's the growth of the freshmen over the past couple of weeks that hurt Purdue tonight. They are starting to get it.

Yeah it's a good thing none of that happened in any other game this year. Like ND or UW or O$U... oh wait.. sorry, I forgot those obliterate your agenda so it doesn't apply.

Thank God you are not a coach.

why? because he understands that at this level, and any level really, being flexible and making adjustments is what makes a good coach?

why is it that on every message board, there are a vocal majority who just bash anyone who sees the faults of the team?

Except that he doesn't understand. He thinks zone is some magic bullet that more than likely will have zero impact on an outcome .

Painter has already shown he can make the right adjustments. Just because they don;t align with what you think should happen doesn't make them the wrong ones.

I won't jump off a bridge when Jok gets his points. His scoring ability is special. But yes, letting a bunch of freshmen walk all over us isn't acceptable by any means. We should be able to figure out those consecutive high screen by the second half.

I also feel like Haas needs to alter more shots. I get frustrated with him because I see him with his hands down when a guy shoots over him. Put your hands up at least big fella!

I think Haas out of any player I have seen at Purdue is impacted the most on how the game is called against him. He seems to come out aggressive but when called for a ticky-tack foul or he gets mugged and nothing called it really seems to hurt his focus a bit.

I don't really blame officials either because I think they simply do not know how to call games correctly when he is in. But one thing I will say, he needs to just go strong to the basket as often as he can. There are a lot of points that were left in a few games that he could of flushed with a dunk.

It's you who does not understand basketball. No one said zone is 100% answer or counter. But basketball is all about rhythm momentum. When a team is shooting as good as Iowa was last night, and is beating us off high ball screens over and over, you don't just keep doing the same thing yourself expecting different results. Do you know what that is the definition of? The answer is INSANITY.

You throw in a 2-3 zone, or a 1-3-1 zone, or a 3-2 zone, or anything to throw them off their rhythm even if only for a few possessions. Same reason you call a timeout when a team is on a run.

You change things up to try to disrupt them even if just a little bit. Is it guaranteed to work? No, but it cant hurt to try.

Is this too complicated for purdue homers to understand or no?
