Welcome to Memorial Stadium, where today will be the 380th consecutive sellout for Nebraska. Purdue hopes to make it a somber affair for Cornhusker fans.
The Boilermakers won on their last visit here in 2018, taking a 42-28 decision. The Nebraska quarterback that day was Adrain Martinez. And, the quarterback today for the Cornhuskers will be … Adrian Martinez.
Purdue is looking to get back on track after a humbling 30-13 loss to Wisconsin last week. A win would put the Boilers one victory from bowl eligibility with four games to go.
Nebraska was off last week. The pressure is ratcheting up in Lincoln, as the Cornhuskers must win three of their last four games to become bowl eligible.
Some storylines to watch today.
• Will Aidan O’Connell make good decisions that lead to big plays?
• Can the offense get on track? Purdue has scored 13 points in four of the last five games.
• Will David Bell emerge? He was handcuffed by Wisconsin last week. Will NU use similar tactics on No. 3?
• Will another wideout step up to help if Bell is getting double-teamed?
• Can the Boilers manufacture any semblance of a rushing attack?
• What impact will the three 3-QB system have?
• Will the defense be able to contain Husker QB Adrian Martinez? He’s the most dynamic signal-caller the defense will have faced so far in 2021.
• Can the Huskers’ contain George Karlaftis?
• Will the special teams provided any type of spark?
Health-wise, RB Zander Horvath and OT Greg Long are game-time decisions. Hence, they may not play. If Long can’t go, Eric Miller may flip from right to left tackle with Cam Craig starting at right tackle.
It sounds like G Tyler Witt and LEO Kydran Jenkins likely will play. Keep your eyes peeled.
Mitchell Fineran or Ben Freehill will kickoff with Chris Van Eekeren out.
Of course, other key players are out, and have been: TE Garrett Miller, CB Cory Trice, WR Mershawn Rice, among the top talents out injured.
