Purdue Salaries (1987) - found this from the Exponent in 1987 while I was looking for something else. A decent salary back then, but basketball coaches have come a long way since. To think that Gene made less than Fred Akers and significantly less than Steven Beering! I imagine that ratio for basketball coaches:college presidents has now flipped (and then some) for major conference schools. Also, love the ad to watch the Purdue-Louisville football game at Quincey's. That was my first football game as a student. We ended up tying the Howard Schnellenberger coached team.

My guess is that $99K didn’t include all his income… camps, shoes, radio/TV shows, etc.

I think that's what they made from the state. Athletic dept was self funded at Purdue. If you look now it probably says CMP makes 250k or something.

Forget salaries, did you see Wendy's had a salad bar and it was only $1.99? :p

I bet Steve Lavin remembers, because didn't Keady give him and his assistants coupons for free food at that Wendys?

You think Gene was not paid compared to current head coaches. Well, being assistant coaches in the era was even worse.

You could say that about anything in sports now though.

Ewers might make $6 million as a college player next year supposedly. QBs like Joe Montana did not make that much playing themselves at the height of their careers. Now, you have starting QBs making a minimum of $40 million a year for average QBs. You have Dak Prescott making $62 million.

Who is this going to end up hitting in the pocketbook? The fans through high ticket prices, cable or streaming bills, etc. It has gotten insane.

I am a Browns fan, so do not come at me about players getting paid to much. My fandom, ie sunday ticket, jersey and t-shirt sales, ect is paying Watson 50 million a year for 2 more years and good chance he has taken his last snap for the Browns and will make all that money for being the worst QB in the NFL.

Damn, I need that Wendy's salad bar coupon more than ever now.

Hey I worked at that Wendy's while going thru school in the early 80's. That salad bar pumped out a lot of lettuce. Largest grossing Wendy's in the state of Indiana at the time!

I miss salad bars. Not buffets where you gorge yourself, but a good ole fashion salad before before the meal is nice.

Where was that wendy's? I cant picture it

Nick Saban was highly underpaid tbh. The amount of kids who enrolled after Bamas success and the money that was brought in…he should have been paid a lot more!
