Taylor did a great job protecting the rim. Several athletic blocks. Could really help this year in spurts.

Eastern will be very good for Purdue but he's a freshman and will need some time. Good handles, good vision, great size, and can attack the rim.

Wheeler similar to Eastern in that he will be very good for Purdue but needs time. He's huge for a 3. Rebounds well, has hops for days, very athletic, decent handle. Lots of tools.

Grady Eifert actually had a hell of a game and got lots of PT. Didn't expect that.

Carsen looks good but is very hit or miss. Needs to be a little more steady. Should have a big year though.

Wish Haas was more aggressive on the boards. He could be a monster there if he wanted.

All the seniors plus Cline looked good, steady, experienced, but will need help from the newcomers if they want to do big things this year.

Surprised by lack of PT from Ewing. He looked pretty good when in for the only 2 minutes of PT that he got.

Saw lots of familiar faces at Carmel. Eric Hunter, Isaiah Thompson, Frank Kendrick, Kristoff Kendrick, Brian Cardinal, Ryne Smith, DJ Byrd, Dan Dakich, Matt Waddell, Roy Hairston.

Good time. Would highly recommend catching the Lafayette Jeff game if you can.

I only saw the second half, but was not totally impressed with Taylor's performance.

yes he did have 4 monster blocks. But when he was in, Canada closed the gap and was getting multiple second chance rebounds.

I had no idea why he took those two three point shots. he missed both shots badly, and there was nobody under the basket to rebound. taylor did make a nice in the paint bucket. For Purdue to succeed, Taylor needs to be a rim protector and also hit the offensive glass, not try be a perimeter shooter. and yes, I cringed when Swanigan took those shots last year too. it was the same result. When our big man takes 3 point shots, if he misses, there is nobody underneath to get the rebound.

in his defense, Taylor did play decent defense forcing Canada to take a lot of outside shots. and to add to that, I didn't see any no contested lay-ups of Canadian players trying to drive through the lane.

as for rebounds, the box score will be a little misleading as a lot of rebounds were made by the ball bouncing off the glass or rim straight into purdue defenders' hands.

the guy who surprised me most was Cline. he put forth some real effort.

the guy who disappointed me most was C Edwards. he had great moments, and then sloppy moments and his Fts need improvements.

I hate to say this: PJ looked great.

I'm a little disappointed in V Edwards - chiefly because he's a senior and didn't play much in the second half because of foul trouble. As a Senior, he should know better, and know that the team needs him on the court.

I mentioned has in several other threads. he looked good and was the difference in the game. Purdue was a totally different team with him on the court. Wheeler and Taylor can jump, but Haas is a game changer.

Have to remember...that's literally the first time he has meaningful playing time against other players in a true game setting since high school....once he gets his game legs under him, he'll be a great 10-15 minute player for Purdue in season. As I have said for a long time...if Taylor and Haarms can combine for 17 minutes and average 10 and 8 between themselves...Purdue is in a good position because Haas is going to get 14 and 8 pretty much every game. That gives Purdue 24 and 16 from their post players.

JT can defend the high ball screen, runs the court and is reasonably quick to the ball for rebounds. he will play and help Purdue this year. In his limited time at Purdue he has never been a back to the basket full time player...he has always shown more of a traditional 4, but with time guarding AJ, Haas and Biggie he has seen a lot of time playing low post D. Haarms is the MOST intriguing player on the team. I watch him rebounding and passing to the players during warmups and I see a more fluid 7'2" player that "appears" to be reasonably quick in his movements.

I think I can agree with a lot of this from my perspective. GRady played as well as he is capable...played smart...happy for him. I didn't think Purdue played well on D and we know that will get cleaned up. Towards the end Canada calls time out and you know the first option is to get a good look for a three and there are 2 players to guard as they have over half the points and the one that had a step back with the dribble and a jumper off screens away from teh ball and he runs baseline and the second screen frees him for a three. It will be interesting to see what they do tomorrow as I think that will tell more about Purdue.

We need to remember that it was in a high school gym as will be tomorrow, but that puts players in scoring position quicker and reduced fatigue in teams with a shorter rotation...and should have helped Haas in fatigue and not getting beat down the court as much. We also need to remember that the existing players are without Biggie and that the team that was formed around him must do different or more things this year. Additionally, there are new players and so those two things, rushing the ball too much, everyone trying to get off to a good start, jitters and going 12 deep makes it hard to get in sync and get a good flow. Now tomorrow, can Purdue guard the guard? Their center is tough, versatile and can score in a lot of ways...the guard...nice shooting touch. The refs were terrible.

I'm debating about tomorrow, but I'll bet I go.

Why would you hate to say PJ looked great? This poor kid has been criticized his entire career. Everyone is looking for his replacements but yet overlooking how efficient he has been for us as a PG. Don't get me wrong, I am excited for a PG with NE size as we have never really had something like that, but let's not continually discount PJ's contribution to the team.

And for the record- not saying you are doing that but an overall thought.

my words are a reflection of my previous comments made prior to today. I was one of the leading posters wanting PJ to become our 6th man, and let Eastern start. So my comment was more, I hate to say it, but I was wrong. unlike some people, I admit when I'm wrong. PJ played a decent game and was tremendous in crunch time when we needed him most.

I think you mean 7'3! He's the tallest guy on the squad!

I thought Pj rushed and looked for his shot a little more than the past early, but when it got tight Matt called him in to control things and Mr steady hit some big Fts. PJ is the ultimate teammate adn probably comes about has close to reaching his potential as he can. His physical abilities are limited, but his heart isn't.

that is what I thought, but in a picture standing next to Haas...he looks shorter and so I just put him at 7'2". Either way I am most excited to see what he is capable

That's exactly what Kenny Lowe told me why CMP recruited PJT. Kenny said to turn the program around, CMP was looking for a PG who would run through a brick wall for his teammates and the program and a kid who wouldn't turn the ball over and be clutch when he needed to be in the closing moments of games....I think that describes exactly what PJT is. He'll be a player that many fans look back and say....'if only we had a PG like PJT was back in the day'

Yeah, I thought about that picture when Cliz said he was the tallest at 7'3.. But... pictures can be deceiving. There's camera angles, shoe sole height, someone scrunching down, someone stretching up... Either way, he's a tall dude, and filling out nicely. I really wish we could see him play this summer also, but, soon....

Well for a bad shooting night except for Boogie I thought they played well.....

Ewing didn't play as much because he hasn't had the time to figure out the system as much as everyone else...will get more minutes as he learns the system. To talented to sit too long.....

Eifert know no other way to play...smart kid, knows the system and is 100% effort and doesn't miss an assignment.....

As far as JT...I told you he will be beast and a crowd favorite this year and next....love his passion to play and play for Purdue.

Boiler Up!

PS: Purdue will hit more shots today at Laf Jeff and Painter will play more inside out....we have 12+ 3's.....

i didn't know about the lane rule and so that explains "some" of why the D was bad. The rule eliminates some of the effectiveness of the shell defense that the team practices everyday

Carsen's year will be good, but can be great if he becomes more consistent. He had 18 points in the game Saturday, but on 18 shots (including 1-7 from 3). He had these issues last year as well. Not terribly concerned about things in these games as it's more about experience and gelling as I don't really anticipate people like Grady Eifert seeing 5 minutes a game. So these games can be great for getting him more experience to maybe learn when to not pull the trigger.
