I was thinking of all the fouls called during Sunday's Purdue game and thought to look up the NCAA personal foul rates for Purdue, St. Peter's, Texas, and Yale. I would expect more fouls to be called on Texas over the course of the season given the nature of the defense Coach Beard likes to play. I haven't seen St. Peter's play but I expect them to be called for a lot of fouls based on their season total. I also expect the number of St. Peter's personal fouls to be further exacerbated by the mismatch at the 5 position and Jaden Ivey's ability to attack the rim. Needless to say, I expect Purdue to shoot a lot of FTs on Friday evening. Hopefully, they will convert a lot of them!
I also added North Carolina, UCLA, and a couple of B1G teams who made the NCAA tourney for reference. Based on my review, Minnesota (ranked 22) and Northwestern (ranked 249) committed the least and most number of fouls per game, respectively, of the B1G teams.
Personal Fouls Per Game
I also looked up the number of free throw attempts for the same teams and added the number per game and percent converted. It's no surprise to see Purdue ranked so high given that they pound the ball inside and let Ivey attack the rim. This also shows that St. Peter's gets to the free throw line a lot, more than IU on a per game basis. St. Peter's doesn't shoot a lot of 3-pointers as they are ranked 323rd in 3-point FG attempts. I suspect most of their FTs result from attacking the rim. As such, I expect they will attack Ivey, Edey, and Williams in an attempt to get them into foul trouble.
