Purdue football Football Scholarship Grid Update - Valentine's Day Edition

Good Morning All & Happy Valentine's Day to Everyone,

Just wanted to do a quick update on the scholarship situation for the football team, as many have asked if we are over on scholarship or not.

A couple of notes on my grid:

1. I currently have Purdue with exactly Zero Scholarships open, so, Coach Walters maneuvered Early Signing Day, The Transfer Portal, and National Signing Day to perfection. With the flip of Kendrick Gilbert to Kentucky, that put the Boilers at the exact scholarship amount of 85.
2. Bryce Hampton has petitioned for a 7th year and Purdue is still waiting to hear back about that. The hope is that he would get the additional year, as the cornerback situation is less than ideal right now, and he would serve as a stopgap for a season.
3. Tee Denson may or may not play again. I guess he had a pretty serious injury last season and has not totally recovered from that. Obviously, if he and Hampton were ruled not able to play, that would give Purdue wiggle room for the second portal window.
4. There will be attrition, from what I have heard many players on the team are waiting to see what Spring Ball will look like to decide if they are jumping ship or not. There is no doubt in my mind that some players won't like where they are at on the depth chart after the Spring Game and will decide to enter, and that is okay, Purdue has some gaps that they need to fill still.
5. As it stands right now, there is room for 15 for the 2024 class, which can fluctuate, as anything nowadays obviously. 15 to 18 is probably a good number of freshmen each season, as that allows plenty of transfer portal room.

I am thoroughly impressed that Walters and his staff somehow magically got the scholarship situation to right at 0 before Spring Ball. It will be interesting to follow the rest of the winter workouts and Spring Ball to see what this team will look like come the summer months.
