I've lived in South Carolina for the last 11 years and have two kids who are currently in college. My experience has been that the only kids who know where Purdue is or who care where Purdue is are the few kids who had a parent or family member attend Purdue.

It would be like a kid from Indy saying he wants to go to University of South Carolina for football. Or a smart kid who wants to be an engineer from Lafayette applying to Georgia Tech. Why?

I know this isn't necessarily the point of this discussion, but Auburn and Clemson are both the names of the cities/towns they are in. Auburn, AL and Clemson, SC.

Just mentioning since the OP said something about schools not having a state or city name.
