As i said in my post last week Fleck is the guy!!! Flat out coach and once he has his players in place he runs over NW and ILL It is quite a accomplishment for a program that sucked 4 years ago Open up the wallet and put some fans back in the seats and give him what he wants HE HAS EARNED THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE OUR NEXT COACH

Can you offer that?
Too excited to use periods?
I can't get excited for fleck. I think he's cheesy. So he's won 8 games at a Mac school. I bet hazell couldn't do that. Oh, wait a minute....
I know one coach thats not in love with Fleck, the hand shake after the game yesterday was like the one a coach gets from you know who down south after a team kicks IU ass in basketball.I like Fleck and as he grows older he will calm down. Hey hes only 12 or 13 years older than the players he coaching give him a pass right now.So you'd not be excited for a coach that was 1-11 and then had two 8 win seasons and bowl games and now This year has beaten two B10 teams and is likely going to win 10-11 games. The comparisons to DH2 and his time in the MAC make zero sense. He had one good season, Fleck is on good season 3, and DH2 didn't come close to recruiting at the level Fleck has. If he wins games I don't care how many cheesy slogans he has I'll be all about them. Imagine if DH2 had our program on that line of progress people would be ecstatic. We struck out with DH2 but it's well documented how many very good coaches came from the MAC. I get that they both coached in that conference but that's where the comparisons stop. They are night and day as people and coaches.

Some good points there. But hazell took a traditionally pathetic football school from 5 wins to 11. Success in lower conferences doesn't always translate to b10. And these b10 teams he's beaten aren't exactly powerhouses.
But I'm arguing unfairly, as I'm crapping on fleck but can't come up with a better candidate. I really love Tom Herman. Apparently he's to expensive.
What about Greg schiano? I remember him as an asshole for some reason.
Would les miles ever take this job?
I'm not offended by briles either. But too many are for that to happen.
If Schiano were that good he would have been brought back to Rutgers like Petrino was brought back to Louisville. Seems to be working down there. Fleck looks to be the guy.BOT wouldn't touch Briles. Herman wouldn't come here, he will get a Top Notch job. Schiano is interesting, had success at Rutgers , I'm sure he'd like another HC gig. I'd be happy with that or Fleck, but not sure what direction Bobinski will want to go.
has anyone ever tried to offer a high incentive win-based contract - e.g. 1M base plus .5M per win (or something similar to that)?give it to him in incentives with no large buyout or long term deal. a good coach would take the offer. at least one better than the past couple guys
Right now, Purdue needs to forfeit some of its non-conference contracts and take the road that IU has taken over the last 5 years. The baseline should be wins, especially given the 9 game conference season. The most important aspect to getting things turned around right now is wins...and starting the season off next year with Louisville is digging a horrible grave for a potential new coach.has anyone ever tried to offer a high incentive win-based contract - e.g. 1M base plus .5M per win (or something similar to that)?
if an AD is willing, and you could attract OCs, up-and-comers, etc., why not pay the premium for the success?
(things like non conf scheduling would develop as an issue i'm sure, but that could be addressed later i guess).

Hazell inherited the 11 win team, as he was only there 2 years. Some good points there. But hazell took a traditionally pathetic football school from 5 wins to 11. Success in lower conferences doesn't always translate to b10. And these b10 teams he's beaten aren't exactly powerhouses.

He didn't recruit the bulk of the contributing players on the 11 win team, including Dri Archer. That's what I meant by "inherited".He inherited a team that was 5-7 the year previous. They went 5-7 and then 11-2.
I think it's a little disingenuous to say he didn't accomplish anything there.

ya i agree, as i am not realistically expecting a high profile/big name in the end anyway. Why take that, when somebody is going to pay you garunteed money with a fully garunteed contract? That's the price of poker now. To boot, whoever comes in here isn't going to win a ton of games off the bat.
To get any high profile coach to come here, it will take a big $$$, fully garunteed contract. Plus, if we only won 8 games is that really worth $5mil? I'd argue it's not. If Fleck is really asking $3.5... I'd pay it in a heartbeat. I think it would take him a few years of recruiting to get us back to 7-8 wins, but I think he could do it. Problem is...he's young and would def. use us as a stepping stone. We could afford to step up and pay him if somebody else would...but even with the $$$ we aren't the NFL or a blue blood.
Whereas a guy like Schiano or Briles after their last few years would be looking to find a place to stick it out and build something I believe.
Tom Herman won't be coaching here. Ever.
I just don't see enough roster turnover between 2012 and 2013 to justify going from a 6 win team to a 1 win team.I know what you meant. Still have to coach them up...
I don't think Hazell is as bad of a coach as he has been here. I just think it's a bad situation for him. Purdue's not an easy place to win. I think that Hazell can improve on a lot... But also he inherited those bad 2013 and 2014 teams weren't made up of his players.
See, that dumb bullshit can go both ways.
No good coach would take an incentive based, low-buyout contract. That's just plain stupid.
Huh? Really?I just don't see enough roster turnover between 2012 and 2013 to justify going from a 6 win team to a 1 win team.
Returning 15 starters and a QB with some experience (Rob henry) is not an excuse to cut your win total by 5 games, in my opinion. But maybe you disagree and that's fine.Huh? Really?
We started 3 R FR and a R SO TE on the OL.
That's all I needed to know.
New QB. 2 new QBs to be exact. On D, Karan short was gone.
I think you're just thinking what you'd like to think.
It's those 7 starters we didn't return that were key. Show me a good OL EVER that was made up of all underclass men.Returning 15 starters and a QB with some experience (Rob henry) is not an excuse to cut your win total by 5 games, in my opinion. But maybe you disagree and that's fine.
Still not an excuse to go from 6 wins to 1. Maybe 4 or 5. That team was an undisciplined mess. It's those 7 starters we didn't return that were key. Show me a good OL EVER that was made up of all underclass men.
That OL was bad. Big reason the team as a whole was bad
Why is that ?note to brian. there needs to be an unlike button. for posts like this
New QB behind a new OL? Really? Next you'll tell me Hope was a killer recruiter.Still not an excuse to go from 6 wins to 1. Maybe 4 or 5. That team was an undisciplined mess.
Cheesy how? Turned a doormat of the MAC to the top in 4 years, that sucks I wish we could do that. Recruits his ass off and gets three star kids to go to MAC schools when we are struggling to get three stars at PU. Has a great staff put together who have stayed true to him and stuck by his side for 4 years. Oh we can't do that either. Develops players like we should have been doing ... I guess that's cheesy too! Wake up.Too excited to use periods?

Wasn't a new QB and wasn't a completely new OL either. Every school loses important pieces every year. Idiotic schemes and lack of discipline didn't help matters. Should have been a 4-5 win team.New QB behind a new OL? Really? Next you'll tell me Hope was a killer recruiter.
I think you are correct about the similarities between Fleck and Tiller. Tiller had great coaches stay with him and develop the BBALL on grass mentality at Wyoming and at PU. Didn't always get the best talent but leveled the playing field by being innovative and sticking to what he knew. His system didn't change his entire career at Wyoming or Purdue, push the ball sideline to sideline and end zone to end zone. Fleck isn't far off of that. Innovative and a pound the rock every rep kind of guy, no matter what play is called.I would love to get Tiller's take or a close friend of Joe's take on Fleck to see if there are some similarities in their personalities. The more and more I watch his teams and become more impressed, he starts to look and sound a little like a younger Joe Tiller. Recruits well, develops his talent, staff stays loyal, charasmatic.
I would be happy to have Fleck at Purdue next season and I'm not sure Purdue could do better unless they grab a name OC like Indiana did with Kevin Wilson.
What about Houston's OC Major Applewhite?

Agree. In addition, it may inadvertently incentivize a win-at-all-cost mentality, which could lead to getting loose with recruiting, failing to adequately suspend players who get in trouble, etc. When 100% of your paycheck is variable - and depends exclusively on the number on the left hand column of the ledger - things could get messy real quick. Look at the stuff that gets covered up today when coaches are salaried... imagine the moral predicament coaches would be in knowing that each win directly resulted in a "bonus" of sorts that increased their pay the next week.No good coach would take an incentive based, low-buyout contract. That's just plain stupid.
Doormat of the MAC? In the Bill Cubit years (8 years), they were 51-47 with 3 Bowls, including against us in the Little Caesar's Bowl. In the 4 with Fleck they're 20-21. I wouldn't call them a doormat.Cheesy how? Turned a doormat of the MAC to the top in 4 years, that sucks I wish we could do that.
