FIU cancels game at Indiana. IU trying to pick up a game (link)

Can't imagine how difficult that would be to try and find as most teams have their schedules full already, not many teams that don't have 12 games scheduled and just happen to have Oct 7th open.

For a team having a "breakthrough" season, you wouldn't expect such worry from fans that this will cripple their chances for a bowl.

Did a quick run through of all the teams that have had games cancelled and none have an open week on October 7th...nothing is open for October 7th. Indiana could potentially take this weekend as another bye week and then try to schedule a mid-week make-up game prior to the Big Ten Championship. The only other option could be to schedule Rutgers who also has a bye week at that time and allow Rutgers to hold it as a home game and get a 'free' game.

A couple of peeps over on their forum are disgusting. Glad the majority are putting them in their place

"Hoping or aspiring" to have a breakthrough season is more appropriate. And it will make things harder to attain bowl eligibility for certain, but cripple is too strong a word.

FIU was a likely W for IU this season and means they would need to win 4 games to get to bowl elgible.

After the FIU game, they have Georgia State (a very good G5 program) and they have one of the hardest stretches in the B1G with @PSU, Michigan, @MSU, @ Maryland, and Whisky before finishing against Illinois, Rutgers, and Purdue. They likely needed that game against FIU to have a greater than 40% chance of getting to bowl eligibility with Maryland looking incredibly sporty this season and MSU's defensive resurgence (haven't allowed an offensive TD yet). Tough to lose that game and I think had it happened to Purdue, we as fans would likely be clamoring for some type of fix to help the team or a waiver to get to 5 instead of 6 wins...but the fact is that there are more important things in the grand scheme of things and likely 60% of FIU's roster is from Florida, and those kids need to make sure their friends and family are ok first. Not to mention, they have been in Birmingham and not in their usual setting to prep for a game.

What likely ends up happening is that IU gets to 4 wins with the bucket game whereas Purdue may be at 5 as well. Had IU not had the cancelled FIU game, it likely could have meant a game for a bowl bid. It still could if both teams get to 4 wins and not enough bowl bids get handed out to 6 win teams.

Good points. But Georgia Southern is horrible (so far) this year as is Rutgers. Without the almost sure thing against FIU, IU has to find two wins assuming a replacement game is not found. Purdue and Maryland being much better than expected is a challenge for sure.

IU "ain't got time for this" but these are not normal times (for FIU). Hope they are able to recover quickly.

Well they managed to schedule an FCS opponent so they managed to actually make their schedule even easier.

Actually, according to Sagarin, Florida International has a 46.39 ranking. Charleston Southern has a 49.57 despite being an FCS program. For reference, that places Charleston Southern slightly behind U-Mass but ahead of Kent State, UAB and UTEP.

Then I stand corrected.

Pretty sure most of these teams had recruiting classes ranked higher than some of The Haze's, so you never know.
